Odyssey delay - how will you bridge the gap?

Been getting a little antsy myself (known nowadays as hype). Odssey is potentially the Dust 514/Halo replacement I've Been first seeking then asking for then just dreaming of for literally a decade.

I'm currently leaning toward starting Odyssey as a newb, my current status, and experiencing the climb to wealth with FPS alongside me.

Same as before.

I wasn't planning on picking it up at release since I still haven't seen anything I'd personally consider worth the asking price. Especially knowing the probable state of functionality and polish during the first few weeks/months.

So I'll just keep playing Elite as the mood strikes me, doing whatever I feel like doing at the time - and happily wait until such time as Odyssey either delivers the goods with respect to perceived value, or gets rolled into the base product like Horizons.

I've been playing Elite for years, and will likely continue to do so. I see no real advantage in rushing into Odyssey, so I've planned around that. From where I sit, delays are largely irrelevant.

is it that nothing they've announced piques your interest or that what they have announced that does pique your interest you don't trust to be delivered?

Park Elite completely and play something else (unlikely, I still enjoy playing the game, but it does feel a bit stale these days, not too surprising given how many hours I pumped into it)
I guess I'm asking for some inspiration to keep things fresh - so what about you lot?
This. Plus:
  • doing 100 pushups per day challenge (atm can do 20 in one set) until preordered Odyssey is out in May
  • at last got E 100 heavy in WoT, my 2nd X tier tank, plus unlocked but not yet bought IS-7

(Re)watch The Expanse and you'll feel right at home in Space Engineers.

It's funny how the whole time I was watching the Expanse I kept thinking how the ship designs all reminded me of space engineers. All the technology is about the same too with the OP gatling guns and missiles and the Rocinante itself looks a millitary escort.

Bit of both, but mainly nothing about it really interests me. FPS games aren't really my thing, and reskinned but otherwise well-worn gameplay loops don't especially excite me.

The new rocky/ice planet surfaces look fantastic and are so far the most compelling item, but I suspect for technical reasons everyone will be getting them anyway. Even if not, that alone (IMO) isn't worth the current asking price.

They've (FDev) said a few times that we can 'continue with our ships' if we like, and it's 'not all combat', yet haven't shown us anything substantial* to back up those statements. And with the last couple years of half-baked implementations, I'm no longer inclined to give the benefit of doubt.

I still have scant (and rapidly dwindling) hope they've yet to show us something I'll find exciting - I'm still open to being convinced. However at the price they're asking, I'm just not interested. If it was priced at five or ten, I still wouldn't be all that interested in what's on offer, but I'd likely pick it up anyway.

But so far, no.

Beyond an implied, "Just buy it anyway and keep doing what you've been doing because we've added nothing appreciably new for you in the expansion."

After the neutered game that was Cyberpunk 2077 (so much missing content and AI), I picked up Red Dead redemption 2 on a Steam sale and it's everything that CP77 wasn't (polished, finished, fun, indepth), plus going to give Space Engineers a once over.
I gave ED a 6 month break and came back really refreshed. Going to do the same until Odyssey I think. Will enjoy it more that way.

How will I bridge the gap?

  • Speak to the Mrs
  • Exercise
  • Do other stuff
  • Play other games

It's no big deal that ED:O is delayed. Better released when it's ready, rather than being rushed out (looking at you Cyberpunk).

In particular I'm looking forward to next iterations of
Satisfactory
CP 2077
Space Haven

In terms of new releases I have some interest in
Darktide (WH40K version of Vermintide - Fatshark coop 4player horde crawler in FP)

UBoat also has gone a good way since they went early access. I have quite a good range of games that are doing OK in early access and take a good development. We'll see how the virus overall affects biz, but I think entertainment is mostly stable to booming with the pandemic. But that need not apply to indie games in development.

Interesting examples, as I own both (RDR2 for a few months longer in fact) - CP2077 - 90 hours per Steam, RDR2 about 15 hours. RDR2 is absolutely the gold standard in terms of slickness, but ... I just enjoy playing the former more, despite the issues.

I've done pretty much everything I can/want to in Elite, so was looking forward to a whole bunch of new gameplay elements that Odyssey will inject into the game.

I moved my carrier to Colonia to spend time there until Odyssey releases, but that will only keep me busy for so long - it would've done the job for another couple of months but I feel like I should revisit this approach now, since it'll likely be at least another 5-6 months (even longer for consolieros). There's a few options in my mind:
  1. Dip in and out of the game, doing the same old stuff I did until now, but play less overall (currently booting the game up almost daily still but am playing other stuff more these days)
  2. Scorched Earth approach - full account reset (I actually bought a second account for this so unlikely to do this, too much to lose, primarily the lovely Triple Elite decal, and my FC)
  3. Rebuild my fleet from scratch but keep everything else (this is a contender but ultimately a waste of mats, and it won't be long until I'm back to where I'm now)
  4. Jump from CG to CG in the hope these keep me engaged (the last couple I didn't even bother signing up to due to their grindy nature)
  5. Park Elite completely and play something else (unlikely, I still enjoy playing the game, but it does feel a bit stale these days, not too surprising given how many hours I pumped into it)

I had a 6 month or more break so am happy just pootling about a bit. A mate has recently got the bug so am helping him. But other than that I have so so many games untouched. I got MSFS 2020 and star wars squadrons for Xmas and a ton of other vr games I want to play.

I'm starting to regret not setting some ground rules on the scope of my query in the OP...

As I'm not sure whether speaking more to your Mrs. will solve my Elite dilemma.

Who is it? Golgot? Has VR feedback thread in the offtopics. Worth a look, I'd say.
