Odyssey Going Forwards

Not gonna lie spot on the console community is practically dead at this point the devs haven't made an update on the xbox or psn official clubs since the carrier update.

We have been left with automated store specials the monthly community event and thats it. Unlike pc we dont go online to check what devs talk about its usually in the official club for the devs to do what they do here. Except they havent posted since release

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Panther Clipper?????????????????????????? - Advertised since NewsLetter #08 and #13 well before Odyssey and patches of Horizons yet held back because its not a combat ship, Where is it Braden? NON combat players need new ships too and new focus.

Thank you for your post, @David Braben, it means a lot. I expect some backfire from the console community, though, and I can't say I'd be happy in their position.

o7.
Spot on the console community has practically given up at this point and has slowly died off on xbox release i could see hundreds of people trying to form groups now abot 20 maybe a little more on weekends. Problem ìs we dont get any updates on the online clubs for devs to post this stuff our community is looking at a dev made club for info that hasn't been posted on since the carrier update over a year ago .

Bugs arent a problem here we generally dont care that much about them we've never had a fully functioning wing nav lock or multicrew or teaming up for ground resources hunts we wornt bothered all it took was exiting orbit and landing and we could see each other yay all the rest worked beautifully however now we are being tossed aside with no updates from devs ill upload a pic too and now we find out that the one thing we wanted the ability to walkthrough stations hopefully our ships most likely wont happen. We've heard that song and dance before we wont get it even though we would pay to.

personally, i doubt they made any changes or progress there.
It barely made any changes to the PC players.

I really want to see this game take off again like it did. But odyssey is like a chicken with clipped wings.
Different? Yes. Totally different? No.

They could - for example - have an issue with model design resulting in too many polygons being used putting an undue load on the rendering threads. That could be fixed by making the rendering faster OR improving the modelling to use less polygons.

With performance this bad, I kinda feel they should be exploring all avenues rather than continuing to draw more pretty pictures adding yet more polys to an already underperforming game …

Braben, what are you doing? It's been 8 years since I pledged my donation to gain Beta access for Elite. My life has significantly changed in that amount of time. The entire world was changed within a year. Copy pasting mechanics players have hated for years in space ships onto a beta fps is ridiculous. In 8 years you couldn't come up with anything other than making another set of ingame currency? I'll give you kudos for deep core mining. That's different, cool, and added what every one else wants which is depth to existing gameplay. Why did you stop adding?

All the issues that are present come down to professionalism. All the issues players have with enjoying the game come down to lack of foresight, common sense, and the downplay of the defunct DDF. Stop apologizing and ask yourself who you value more. Players or investors, pick one. Truth is Sony wouldn't let the dumpster fire that is Odyssey on their service anyways because of bugs and abysmal system performance.

The console situation is a lose-lose result for FDev. If they release something now, they'll get the same complaints about performance that they hear from us PC people. If they don't release, you'll complain about their indifference, incompetence, etc. Besides, I don't think Microsoft/Sony would accept releases that would make their hardware look bad. And trust me on this, Odyssey has a long way to go before its performance makes you smile. I think the development was rushed, especially around settlement design and NPC movement. They remembered 4-5 patches after release to reduce/improve the NPCs navmesh (which, as I understand, is all the possible routes they could consider whilst moving), because up until that point, the NPCs were evaluating, if not the whole planet, then at least their continent as possible route, resulting in abysmal frame rate reduction.
I've been exploring for the past 2 weeks far far away from settlements and civilized space, and performance is stunning (16GB, Ryzen 7 5800X, RX580/4GB), with most settings at ultra. But frame rate will drop once I'm back, unless the next patches improve things without breaking the galaxy.

Bottom line, though, I prefer having Odyssey, even with the performance problems, to not having it at all. So I really understand how you feel :)

Fly safe, cmdr. o7

Odyssey performance is pretty good now on my machine (AMD 5800X-5700XT GPU), no difference doing ship based stuff to compared to Horizons, except stations still don't pop into view as smoothly when dropping in as they do in Horizons.
Even the concourses run smooth for me now.
Planet side, just walking around and in the SRV is also good.
Never tried any of the on foot combat yet as I have zero interest in FPS games, I am in Odyssey for the planet side views, without those I would still be using Horizons, especially for collecting raw mats Horizons is still far superior.

Perhaps you might try some of the non-combat options, then?

Just accept a zero-risk delivery to an extraction settlement, about as safe as possible, making a point to stop if a guard wishes to scan you ensures absolutely no risk of combat... Your Frames Per Second will dive in comparison to those nice, empty planets... the optimisation really is that good, currently. (why do some insist that EDO is all FPS? Do they even bother checking?)

I play Elite to fly spaceships.
"Just accept a zero-risk delivery to an extraction settlement, about as safe as possible, making a point to stop if a guard wishes to scan you ensures absolutely no risk of combat." Where is the fun in that ? when I could be popping ships in a CZ

Whatever makes you happy - guess all EDH is, is a FPS in a spaceship then? (All of the game is First Person perspective, unless viewing from the Vanity Cam, of course)
My illustration was to provide an insight to how unfinished the optimisation is in one of the aspects of play, with the derogatory comment about FPS being tossed in for effect.

Same here. The base flying-a-spaceship game (which I really like) has been tossed out the window in favor of a space flavored FPS (which I really dislike).

And I see no indications here on the forum, or anywhere else for that matter, that shows that FD has any interest in providing any new content for a flying-a-spaceship game. So I guess I'm screwed.
Elite has sold its soul to become "Space CoD" ..... so much so that I'm expecting the announcement of a Battle Royale mode, because FDev are so disjointed from what people actually want.

They don't play the game as the most players do.
That's it a key thing; otherwise, the didn't have to open a discussion in forum to get feedback about material gathering. It's an obvious thing for people who play the game.
A new example? The scorpion. A 3307 military vehicle that... don't shoot straight. Clearly who design and implement don't play the game; and the justification is: Balance.
Oh boy... there are so MANY ways to balance things, but they always choose to balance in a different way.

I don't like NMS, but one thing that worked there: Many developers and even the owner PLAY the game. That makes difference, a huge one.

BTW, even with all my criticism, I still not only enjoy the game, but in my opinion is far the best sci-fi / sim game out there.
Obsidian Ant defined perfectly Elite: So many potential, and just a few explored and implemented things. :(

I really hope the Odyssey update (after all the fix of course) has been opened 'the door' to the real in game lore and features like raxxla, thargoids on foot, the return of the guardians and so many other things... I really do!

Cheers and... o7!

It would be nice, but seriously thinking about it, I don't expect much more content. The game is since Dec. 2014 on the market. After seven years and after the messed up start of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey it doesn't sell like sliced bread. The start on game consoles is more than questionable. Major investments in manpower and money are unlikely to come.

I don't want believe in facts, company track record and reality.
Please, let me fool myself to believe that they'll add many new things that isn't liked to grinding, text lore based and no action.
