Odyssey Going Forwards

It seems to me that from EDO release through December they were in "firefighter mode" where they were attempting to get EDO to a point where it was playable. Since then with updates 9, 10, and 11 coming out next week, it seems that they've changed their focus from making the game playable to now providing regular/ordinary performance and optimization updates along with new features. For those of you who play EDO, would you consider it still in crisis mode? From responses I've seen, it sounds like some players still feel it's in crisis mode and others have no problems.

I think it was out of 'firefighting' with the walking NPC pathway optimising stuff on Patch 9 & momentum got patch 10 out. It may be that after patch 11 the budget for fixes may have run out (time and money).

'Normal' after an update is a rapid flurry of 4-5 bug fixing patches over a fortnight or so then nothing more until the next big one.

Fingers crossed for patch 11 rollout to go smoothly, I think ED really needs a win.

I can't say I've really thought it had big problems since about update 4, although I mostly play in solo these days (the multiplayer attempts did seem to be worse) and I'm not the kind of FPS fiend that can't live without 120 frames per second, so it may be a question of expectations rather than anything else.

Nah, it's pretty awesome now for me, the last release made it all silky. Maybe they'll be announcing the console beta fairly soon. Once we get to that point, hopefully, it'll go back to regular dev reports, the announcement of forthcoming features and so on. At least the PC people have stopped frothing at the mouth now. Well, they're only frothing the normal amount these days :)

For the individual yes, we all draw our lines in the sand in difference places. The patch 9 changes I described made no difference to me, I'm out exploring, but appeared to be well received.

I've seen some improvements in framerate but imo at a cost of LoD distances & other quality issues like juddering (frame drops on asset load-in), in terms of actual play Salad Hunting was imo better in the Alpha, with large clumps of plants visible at a distance and at speed from the air. I am essentially still waiting for that actual gameplay loop to improve at an acceptable framerate (to me). Instead of searching the distant landscape for my next landing spot I travel slowly over the terrain at low altitude, waiting for the game engine to load in enough detail for me to spot the plant I am looking for and the terrain & rock obstacles so I can select a suitable landing spot.

But for the playerbase overall I think patch 9 was the point where Odyssey became something worth buying & playing.

I'm a regular EDO player. i mostly do Odyssey mission and conflict zones, basically loads of killing NPCs at planetary settlements. I play at 1080p on ultra, 60FPS with Ryzen 5600X and Radeon RX 6700XT. So my PC more than powerful enough for the monitor. For me the game runs really well so I'd say we are well away from crisis or firefighter mode. There are some issues, especially if you play in a team, but its not gamebreaking stuff.

That's a high level gaming PC and at 1080p I would expect any game to run well, even the most demanding.

I've been playing Odyssey since the Alpha with a i5, RTX 2060, 16Gb RAM, SSD, 1080p, and I've been playing mostly well. FPS have been increasing through updates. There's been a couple patches (updates 7 and 8 maybe?) with some lags, but after that the game runs smoothly even in settlements. Maybe not at 60fps in conflict zones or heavy settlements, but it runs well. I think Odyssey is quite polished now. What we need is more content, more mission types, more places to visit on foot and, of course, thargoids. (and ship interiors, or at least the cockpits XD ). FDev was on route to some of these, so let's hope we get it. Anyway, Odyssey is in a good place now.

I'm sure the game industry knows that those that play games will always want the next generation console so there will be fewer and fewer on last gen gear. With that in mind then the game should be more optimized to the upcoming and newest consoles going forward.

I suppose so, but what is the current wait time for a PS5 from order?

+ I've just got Bloodborne for PS4 as I've never played it, so sticking with 'last gen' for a while, still waiting to give FDev my cash for EDO on consoles!!!
Its sitting in my acc just for this.

Developers are Incompetent and lazy. I’ll never support FD in anything they produce anymore. Goodby.
Same feelings here. A good team with a few good programmers could port it to one console at a time, even if its only on next gen.
Is number of console players x £12 an estimate of sales for EDO for consoles?

I will be saving up for a gaming PC from now on instead of a PS5 (I'm on PS4). BUT, I will not be doing this to get EDO, NO, NO, NO, I have looked at X4 and that looks completely and utterly better than ED, for things I like to do as I am uninterested in FPS (other games do that better), planetary landings and switching on power for missions, etc, etc, and as for looking for PLANTS???!!!! for a few CR, I don't need credits any longer as I have FC + 8Billion.

I will still play EDH for years, including the great CG's, I hope, on PS as there is still SO MUCH (I love mining and exploring) I am intending to do with my new FC (for my own exclusive use from now on BTW), but all my faith in FDev is gone out of the window.

Sorry but in the near future at least there is no longer development for console but in the meantime think about spending the money you would have spent on a ps5 on a PC

Yep there is that, but a PS5 is not £1300-2000 (gaming PC). I thought it was more like £499.
Anyway, ED servers will be only on for a couple more years at most for PC and consoles, then dead for PC AND consoles (zero income, so why would they bother? come on it's business, so dream on!)
Do what you have still to do on ED, as it is now sunset years (8 years old = retired in gaming world).

AND why would I want a 2 grand PC when the PS5 is eventually available with all new games?
The trouble with PC is that even were I to buy a £2000 PC now, in 2 years I would have to spend another £1000 for GPU/CPU uprade, etc!!!! ............suckers.

Well I built my own PC and no its not hard to do in any way, and I'm retired so not much income. The thing is to buy as you can, it may take a few months but it was worth it, most items can be got on eBay and just shop around for the rest. The good thing here is that it has in it what you want, not what a shop thinks you want.
