I had a thought earlier today about what kinds of tasks there will be for Odyssey that might NOT be directly combat related.

We already know there is going to be exploration type things going on, where you can walk around and explore features and terrain on foot, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the planets.

My thoughts went to signal sources and how little love they have been given, literally it is all limpets all the time. Someone out of fuel? Limpet. Gonna collect cargo? Limpet. Someone need repair? Limpet.

So here are my ideas for potential "On Foot" gameplay to add more flavor and experiences to Distress signals and low-threat emissions, seeing as boarding has already been discussed in previous newsletters and Q&A.

Distress Calls: Adding a new suite of possibilities for this, in terms of module damage and hazards. We have already seen fire and stuff on settlement gameplay, so it would be nice to have a 'rescue' possibility rather than just a limpet cycle. Maybe a fire on board, or a damaged module that needs to be repaired, or incapacitated crew members that need assistance. Having player tools that would allow them to repair modules, or put out fires, or even use medical supplies to help stabilize incapacitated crew members for rescue.

There could also be a possibility for multi-crew in this regard, since it was discussed before the option of 'capture' for ships via boarding. In example, going in multi-crew or with AI crew, being able to board a derelict ship, and fix it up for the faction that owns it via tools, and limp it back into a port to 'return' it to the faction for reputation and credits. This could be a mission board item if it is so desired.

Degraded/Encoded/High-grade emissions: Instead of just being a swarm of cargo to be limpeted up, perhaps a boarding task would be available for salvage. Going onto a derelict ship, and using the arc cutter to dislodge cargo and push it out a hatch for collection, or having to board the ship to access the terminal that the data you are trying to recover is contained on.

Ceremonial Comms: We all know we have seen those wedding barges out there, and the occasional funeral barge...but what if you could dock with the ship and watch the actual ceremony? Pay your respects and what not, and walk around with other commanders who happened to pop in?

Salvageable Wreckage/Combat Aftermath: Boarding a ship to recover its black box, Assist in rescuing incapacitated crew still on the ship that didn't make it to the escape pods. Recovering personal affects from those who died and turning it in to a search and rescue agent to be returned to the family.

There are plenty of items that Frontier could create, and treat like materials or bonds/data that could be obtained on foot without needing to use cargo limpets, that could be turned in for credits as well as allowing for Roleplay opportunities and further bring people into the world of ED. I would be curious to hear what other veteran CMDRs out there have to say, or any other suggested activities that we could do on foot outside of combat.
