Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

For what concerns the galaxy/system UI, I like some parts and dislike some others. For what concerns the outfitting UI, I feel that the changes made it unnecessarily sophisticated and convoluted and that Horizons UI is better in every aspect.

GALAXY UI PROs
  • The system search function is better than Horizons. Having a list of systems you can select is overall better.
  • System filters are in a good spot.
  • Having my ships' positions easily accessible in the galaxy map is a great addition.
  • New markers added are a great addition, too.
  • Better bookmarks accessibility.
  • Copy system name function.
GALAXY UI CONS
  • Selecting a system is sometimes harder than Horizons UI. It feels less precise and sometimes clicking on a system results in selecting a system I didn't want to select. I feel that this issue would be magnified in denser areas, such as Galaxy Centre.
SYSTEM UI PROs
  • Points of Interest function in system map allows a better search function for settlements.
  • Better bookmarks accessibility.
  • Copy body name function.
SYSTEM UI CONS
  • Too many steps to access basic body information.
Suggestion: I think that "Description tab" and "Planetary information tab" should be merged.
  • Missing body information replaced by an image that is sometimes ambigous or doesn't really explain what body type you're looking at.
Suggestion: Having a simple high metal content body or icy body nomenclature, as we used to have in Horizons, would be clearer.
OUTFITTING UI PROs
  • Stored modules are more clearly sorted and are easier to access.
OUTFITTING UI CONS
  • Modules are difficult to fit on ships. When you have more modules of the same type to fit, it's really easy to fit an already equipped module in another slot, trying to fit another one.
  • UI is overall counterintuitive and disorienting.
  • UI generally requires more steps to do simple things that in the old UI would require less steps. More of this in the next point.
  • Equipping stored modules is not time efficient.
As of right now I stored four heatsinks and I am trying to equip them back on the ship. Every time I want to do that I have to select modules storage, then select heatsinks, then select the heatsink and equipping it on the desired slot. After doing that, if I want to repeat the same process with another module, I have to go back again to "modules storage" and do it all over again.
  • Possible solutions: revert it back to the old UI. The new outfitting UI is just worse.

Liking it overall

Most of my issues with the map have been mentioned already so ill avoid restating.

The only thing id personally like added is to do with the search bar , i would like for it to be able to have a keypress to acitvate the search bar field and to go directly to a result if you add the full system name , atm you have to click , paste , click which works but an option for "enter, paste, enter" or "space, paste, space" would round it off personally speaking.

P.S
Also can we have the "population by size" option stay turned on , it always turns itself off for some reason

This is on a 3840x1600 display.

The cursor, circles, and system/planetary do not align correctly. In a busy area of the galaxy map, this makes it extremely difficult to know what one is actually looking at.
Once the pointer gets outside the icon bars, it becomes essentially useless, so on ultra-wide displays lass than 20% of the actual screen space is useful once one takes into account the area that the popup icon menus use.

Overall thoughts
The new layout is interesting to maximize the information on the screen and to access quickly to the actions, but the right banner is less convenient than a contextual menu near the selected item.

Specific Issues
  • In the system map, in the right panel: Description and Planetary information should not be separated. For exploration, it is difficult to switch from one menu to another for each planet for which you want physical information.
  • Also, a missclick on the Market Information menu between Description and Planetary Information switches from a map mode to User data view.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Combine Description and Planetary information into one menu.
  • The Market Information menu should not lose the former mode chosen. Either don't switch to User data view, or go back to the old mode as soon as you exit the menu.

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

Why does pc get to decide how the game should be regarding the UI?

Surely this should be looked at after console release so you can get a middle ground. I only say this as something might be really great for pc but utterly rubbish for consoles for example the recent history tab which still doesn't work for xbox after all this time with no intention to correct it.

My overall thoughts are the UI is both more and less cluttered than it was in Horizons. The map no longer automatically selecting random bodies as you mouse over them is great as it removes the "dance" trying to navigate to the Horizons menu while not accidentally getting to close to another body and highlighting it but the information is far to "spread out" compared to Horizons. There's several pages for what was a single page in Horizons and a few other issues listed below.

My specific problems with the map are as follows.

  • You cannot plot a route directly to a bookmark from the galaxy map screen requiring you to enter the far slower to load system map to plot a route to bodies, stations and carriers within a system.
  • It does not automatically replot a route if you change filters(such as the star class filter) or if you change your ship and the "manual replot" button added does not function if you change them either. Only if you change from Economical mode to Fastest route does this option function.
  • The search bar is slower and less keyboard friendly. Requiring you to click a system to select it even if it's the only system in the list rather than hitting enter. You also cannot use the enter key to search through groups of systems(for example if you search for the system "Oorb Aowsy AA-A" in Horizons hitting enter once will take you to "Oorb Aowsy AA-A 'A1'" then "A2" and so on down the list while doing this in Odyssey isn't possible without repeated mouse clicks.
  • "Hold to plot" is nice most of the time but in Orrery mode it becomes annoying since by default you use hold the mouse buttons down to move around, rotate and change height in the map. All of which will pull focus back to a planet and target it since constantly will plot and then unplot a route.
  • The system map icon not always being present in the galaxy map and just grayed out if the system is unvisited feels clunky and appears to cause the icon to delay appearing for visited systems.
  • Engineers and bookmarks are both orange in Odyssey making engineers stand out on the map less.

My ideas on fixes for those problems in the same order.

  • Readd the ability to plot a route directly to a bookmark from the bookmarks menu like Horizons.
  • Readd the automatic route plotting on any filter or ship change. If this isn't possible enable the manual replot button to always be available rather than only on changing between economical and fastest.
  • Readd Horizons style searching as part of the new list search function.
  • Add a toggle function for hold to plot or disable it entirely in Orrery mode.
  • Have the system map icon always be present for every system and grayed out if unvisited like Horizons.
  • Revert engineer icons to be purple like Horizons making them stand out more in the map.
There are also several bugs in the new galaxy map such as the option to use neutron boosts and material FSD boosts in plotting not working(you can't plot a route anywhere with either option enabled).

Overall thoughts

I think some of the changes are nice, in particular the POI section, list of Odessey and settlements and enhanced search. I like the intention of the bookmark section but it needs work. I don't like that you can no longer just select a system and use the right mouse button for more options.

Specific Issues –

  1. Holding down the button to "autoroute" is a pain and cumbersome. Please allow right-click to select target
  2. This is harder to put into words, however, there is just too many clicks to get what you need completed
  3. There are too many buttons to click just to find basic info.
  4. The map forgets your destination after logout or oddly when you enter supercruise
  5. <placeholder>

Suggested Fixes for the Issues –

  1. Please allow right-click to select target again.
  2. Reduce the number of clicks if possible
  3. Display basic planet and system info, such as atmosphere and so on upfront as soon as you click a planet or object
  4. Store the location and in Supercruise lock onto the next jump.
  5. <placeholder>

In EDH, my bookmarks allowed me to navigate directly to the Station that was marked. EDO does not allow that.

For Example: I have Jameson Station Bookmarked, in EDH i could navigate directly there with one click of the Bookmark. In EDO, the same bookmark just takes me to the Shinrarta Dezhra system.

Please give us back what we had in EDH.

I like the new system and galaxy maps a lot.

I have only one observation - For any bookmarked locations, it would be useful to have a 'plot route' option attached to the bookmark (as in the previous galaxy map). This would then plot a course to the system and also then to the exact location within that system. At the moment, players have to click several times in succession to achieve something that was done very easily before.

Except for that one niggle, the new maps are a definite improvement - even though I rather liked the maps we already had!

Removing bookmarks in Odyssey is unnecessarily lengthy and the changes go against all UI design principles of less clicks the better.

Example: Removing a bookmark:

Horizons:
1) Hover over bookmarked system
2) Click Remove bookmark icon
3) Click confirm button
Result: 2 clicks, no additional windows, details of the system remain on screen so unlikely to remove bookmark on wrong system, very efficient UI design

Odyssey:
1) Click bookmarked system
2) Move to and click bookmark icon on left menu
3) Move to and click manage Bookmarks button
4) Scroll down list of all bookmarks looking for the one you wish to remove (if you can remember the exact name, no details of the system are now visible due to the bookmarks window over the top of the map)
5) Click the desired system
6) move to and click the Remove Bookmark button in ANOTHER new window
7) Click Confirm
8) Right click Bookmarks window to close
Result: 7 clicks, 3 additional windows/sub menus, details of the system hidden by a window more likely to remove bookmark on wrong system, very inefficient UI design compared to Horizons.

The easy fix?

Make the "Add Bookmark" button on the right menu change to "Remove Bookmark" if the targetted system is already bookmarked instead of greying it out and displaying "Already bookmarked".

Galaxy Map
I love how it looks, the new design language in my opinion is great. What's not so great is how many clicks it takes to do anything.

My biggest gripe is sifting through planet outposts and having to click the information button almost every time I want to see who owns the outpost. This is quest essential info and should honestly always be open, the info box occupies a space that is empty otherwise regardless.

Suggestions
ofc by no means a UX/UI designer but would love a perpetually open (and better yet customizable) "At a glance" information panel that displays filtered information on whatever the player has selected.

Outfitting
Also love the new design language but the new outfitting menu is a chore to work with. Would love the old menus and submenus with the current updated design.

I am exclusively a VR player, so keep that in mind.

Galaxy Map:

Overall thoughts – Overall I like a lot of the changes, I do feel like information was too packed into the four tabs on the Horizons system map, and the interface was annoying to use in VR (I remember having to keep my head very still while looking at it). Having information on a curved panel is also a nice improvement, having the search bar in a prominent location and having prominent copy-paste features are by far the best features of this rework.

Specific Issues
  • UI flow for bookmarking is weird. It is not apparent that you need to go to the bookmark manager to delete bookmarks.
  • There is no way to quickly select bookmarks as route destinations, especially if you bookmark specific stations and bodies. Clicking a bookmark instead zooms to that system
  • Some of the right panel elements have inconsistent behavior, namely the button for system map data. The system map data button disappears when it is unavailable where other buttons gray out.
  • The circular cursor for selected systems does not display at the right depth in VR. Note that the same issue also applies to the System Map. I reported the issue as a bug: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/35202
Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
  • The button for bookmarking should also be able to remove bookmarks instead of being grayed out when a bookmarked system is selected -- there's no reason that removing a bookmark should be a substantially more involved process than adding one.
  • When a bookmark is highlighted in the menu, there should be a way to plot a route to it in one button press.
  • Right panel elements that are unavailable for use should always have a tooltip explaining why it isn't available -- I believe this only affects the System Map button right now. For example, say that the station you're in does not have exploration data for that system for sale.
  • Fix the VR bugs.
System Map:

Overall thoughts – Overall I have few complaints about the system map. The new UI has better separation of bits of information compared to the old panel.

Specific Issues
  • I remember being able to zoom in to look at bodies even if they weren't landable. This doesn't appear to be possible any more. It's important to be able to see the pretty planets in more detail.
Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Add a way to zoom in on planets that are non-landable.

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues
Overall thoughts -- Bookmark navigation from the galaxy map is kind of terrible compared to Horizons.

Specific Issues:
  1. From the galaxy map, you can't directly plot a a path to a bookmark that is a planet or station contained within a system.
Suggested Fixes:
  1. From the system map, you should be able to select Bookmarks -> Stations -> click and hold on a station to plot a route to that station. You should NOT have to navigate Manage Bookmarks just to plot a route to a bookmarked station or planet.

System Map
The icon and text to show the currently selected system body is offset incorrectly on 32:9 (5120x1440) resolution screens. Shown below, the circle icon is over the star not the asteroid belt and the label is offset wrong.

1621963021076.png

Even worse, sometimes the text gets cut off entirely.

1621963082145.png

In general the whole System Map just looks bad on 32:9 resolution, far too much wasted space.

The new UI feels like it's made for smart phones. If I could tap these icons it would work well, but of course I can't.

My main points:
  • Missing functionality and information (the forum has a thread which lists everything. A CM posted there too, so you've read it. :) )
  • Moving the mouse pointer to the edge of the screen to activate the system map or see the system info is tedious, especially when exploring. I'd love to be able to assign hotkeys to those functions.
  • "hold for plotting route" I like, but more often than not the process is cancelled by the auto-center feature of the map which makes the system slip away from the mouse pointer. That could be solved by locking down the plotting process as soon as I hold down the button, so it continues no matter where the mouse pointer is.

On the positive side, I like the more reliable search function, the fact that I can see how many jumps my journey takes and that I can see more map and less side panel now.
Bookmarks also made a step forward with category and a better overview. Still, I would LOVE to be able to customize and group those.
Oh! Almost forgot: COPY SYSTEM NAME! Now, that is absolutely awesome!

Overall thoughts –

Galmap im 50/50 on, 50% improvements, 50% ill get used to it. Outfitting is 10% ill get used to it, 90% a massive setback in QOL made to this system over the years.

Specific Issues –
  • It takes more time/#-of-clicks to perform the same actions as before due to the 'nested menus' of the new outfitting UI
  • Swapping hardpoints form storage takes significantly longer due to multiple UI issues (nested menus as above, applying a module form storage leaves you in loadout, but there's no way to grab items from storage without backing out of the loadout submenu all together)
  • There's a default-on checkbox/slider (that also occasionally rechecks itself) to sell your module instead of store (what was wrong with 2 clear buttons to sell/store items?)
  • Applying fighters, SRVs, and core internals now takes you to a new menu with just 1 option that seems kinda redundant.
  • Ships that did not previously have to scroll to view a relatively small selection of internals/hardpoints now do.
  • It's more difficult to view what modules are stored at the current station, which ones are elsewhere, and what's in transit

Suggested Fixes for the Issues –
  • Obviously, outfitting improvements were minimal so you could just roll back to horizons menu and keep improving that.
or
  • Replace the module 'sell/store' menu's checkbox and sell button with a 'sell item and apply' and 'store item and apply' like the last menu had.
  • Have applying modules from storage take you back to the storage section
  • Add an option to view stored items when viewing a hardpoint in loadout.
  • Remove SRV, fighter bays, and core internals, having you select a section to buy new ones, as they only have 1 section.
  • Add filter options to view what's stored at the current station only in module storage
  • Add a 'view in transit' section to module storage.
  • re-add the 'store multiple' option that was relatively recently added to the old UI

My only inputs for galmap are:
have options that are unavialable (like plot rout, buy trade data, & system view) be grayed out instead of non-existant when unavilable.
let us plot rout directly to a bookmark location within a system/planet.
Tell me which freinds are in the system in sytem info

    bring back the freinds tab

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

I prefer the old system because only one part of the screen has UI elements. All of the info is always contained in one big panel instead of having to click through multiple panels to get the same information. Also switching between map modes is much easier because of the three big buttons at the top "REALISTIC" "MAP" "POWERPLAY".

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

  • After pressing enter when typing a system name in the galaxy map, the map does not automatically go to the system. Instead you must first click on the drop down result, adding one extra step
  • Text in the system search input field is not centered correctly vertically (it is too low in the bar)
  • The buttons on either side of the map take up more space than the old single bar on the left
  • Everytime the map is used you must click the system or body info button to get basic info instead of it automatically being visible when selecting the system or body in the map
  • Multiple buttons must be selected to get all of the info that was previously availble in one big overview
  • I am constantly pressing on the wrong buttons because I don't remember what the icons mean (no text labels)
  • Clicking the powerplay map mode does not trigger the view unless you select an indivual PowerPlay leader whereas in the old system it did
  • PowerPlay button separated from realistic and map mode by user data view instead of having the three of them together like in the old map
  • Bookmarks are missing an "all" list that is alphabetically sorted
  • Bookmarks (example: planetary port) can not be plotted to from the bookmarks menu anymore. Only the system is selected and can be plotted to.
  • Point of Interest menu does not show economy label on the POI
  • Selecting a POI from the POI menu does not allow you to target the POI. It only selects the body.
  • Market Information text is not aligned in the box correctly like description and planetary description
  • Description and Planetary Description is separated by the Market Information box, this is unfortunate
  • Description and Planetary Description information is not listed together in one box, requiring multiple clicks to get basic information
  • Atmospheric pressure is listed under Description while Atmospheric consistancy is listed under Planetary Description which means two fields must be checked for atmospheric information
  • Add to bookmarks button does not change to Remove from bookmarks when selecting a target that is already added to your bookmarks
  • View system map button disappears when not available instead of greying out, this is confusing

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

  • When pressing enter on system map and the name is identical to a result, go there immediately
  • Align the text in the search field correctly vertically
  • Ideally go back to the original map layout with one big bar on the left side - I am not happy at all with the new buttons
  • Automatically open the information panel when selecting a system or body so we don't have to manually click open the panel each time we open the map
  • Work to get as much information in the same panel, elliminating the requirement to check multiple panels for basic info
  • Add text labels to the buttons (if you are not going back to the original map system)
  • Automatically switch to PowerPlay view when clicking the PowerPlay map mode without having to select a PowerPlay leader
  • Add an all filter for bookmarks
  • Add buttons to bookmarks for "target" "plot route" and "remove"
  • Add a simple economy label to POIs just like in the information panel
  • Add buttons to POI view to target the POI directly instead of its parent body
  • Align the text correctly in the market panel so that it aligned with other panels such as information and planetary information
  • Combine Description and Planetary Description so that all the text is available in one box
  • If you are not combining: Move Description and Planetary Description together and put Market information below it
  • If you are not combining: List atmospheric pressure in the same text list as Atmospheric consistancy
  • Make the Add to bookmarks button change into a Remove from bookmarks button if the target is already in the bookmarks
  • Always show the View system map button but grey it out if unavailable

Overall thoughts
  • Galaxy map - better.
  • System map - better.

Specific Issues
  • Galaxy map: map mode filters can't be used together, for example - impossible to show only imperial systems with extraction economy.
  • System map: Exit button (or backspace) when used in system map that was opened from galaxy map will return to galaxy map and focus on system where you are at this moment.
  • System map: White dot that shown when hovering cursor over planet not centered. Depends on amount of planets in system this dot can be too far away from targeted planet.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • Click on map mode filter group should switch on/off for that group instead of disabling all others.
  • Focus should be on system that was shown in system map.
  • White dot should be centered on planet at all times.

What I like:
  • The "Button for everything" is not bad per se. I like that I can look for all the information that I need. It's a matter of gettting used to it.
  • I like the search bar at the top.
  • I haven't messed with bookmarks so can't comment there.
What I don't like:
  • The targeting of systems is off center, thus making it hard to click.
  • I think some of the planetary information in the right panels could be combined into one menu.
  • Trying to jump a fleet carrier is a nightmare - it's not intuitive at all. You click a system and while you can just blind jump into the system, if I happen to know the layout of the system, I have to click an extra button to go into system to then target a planet/moon that I want my carrier to orbit.
  • The market information is still useless. I use 3rd party sites because this is not intuitive. I don't want to have to use them, but if we are talking galaxy map - consider an entire revamp of how the market information is displayed, including expanding the range and more detail of information regarding trading commodities.
Otherwise, it's not bad. It's different, and the information is there, but tweaks are needed. Keep at it.
