Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

Hi Frontier,

I really liked the old UI for System Map and Galaxy Map, especially the ability to hover over an object and see its information with clicking on anything.

I have no problem with the hold mouse button down to plot a route to the object. The new Search also seems to work well.

However, managing bookmarks is now MUCH more difficult, especially deleting a bookmark. Having to search through the menu looking for the precise name in the list in order to delete it seems very clunky, especially with hard to remember procedurally generated stars.

It would be really nice if having selected an object with a bookmark, that you could delete the bookmark from the right hand menus, but you can only add a bookmark that way.

I appreciate that you can copy the object name with the button on the right, and then, I assume, paste it into the search bar in the Manage Bookmarks dialog.

Also it would be really nice if we could choose a colour for bookmarks and use separate colours at the same time.

When I am exploring all the stars in an area near my fleet carrier, I like to bookmark all the stars I would like to explore first and then, in Horizons, delete them once they have been explored.

With different coloured bookmarks, I could use a different colour to record which systems I have explored.

Also, it is really hard in the Galaxy Map to quickly see if you have actually visited that star. Yes you can use the Visited Stars option, but it was really easy in Horizons to quickly glance at the buttons and see if the System Button was lit up or not.

So, the Maps definitely need some attention in my opinion.

PS Can we give K type stars a stronger orange to distinguish them from M type stars, as I cannot tell the difference in the Galaxy map as the colours are too close?

PPS One other thing I just thought of, can we get rid of the atmosphere image used on planets as it totally obscures the planet right now and looks awful to boot (in my opinion). Could we not have an icon to indicate an atmosphere instead? I recently discovered an ELW and you would never have guessed from its image that it was an Earth-like as it was dark brown underneath its atmosphere (at least in my monitor). All the planets in that solar system looked like chocolate drops!! Can we fix this please?

One thing I've noticed is a lack of clarity on what we have and have not scanned in terms of geological and biological features on a surface. The system map doesn't even give an idea of whether or not there are features, despite having mapped it previously. This information is still present on FSS and DSS, but even these don't indicate whether or not I've scanned and identified what that feature is previously.

My suggestion is it would be useful to have the number of unique biological and geological features from mapping a body available on the system map, and for all references to also include a count of how many you personally have identified and scanned, to help with exploration and avoid having to go to the planet to find that thing to see if I have already scanned it.

I am not sure if I missed the memo...but I would like a keyboard option using VR in searching for systems.
Right now I have to take off headset and do the search.
Slightly annoying but I might have missed info on a way to do that.
Cheers

Overall thoughts:
Obscure and unintuitive.

Specific Issues:
  • unintuitive.
  • hard to navigate.
  • nameless icons make selecting layers difficult.
  • Power Play layer only has icons to identify each Power...really? You expect me to memorize each banner for each power?
  • new bookmarks system actually made bookmarks difficult to view and select.
  • no "remove bookmark" option, or hidden/difficult to locate. Really?
  • honestly, the old Galaxy Map was way better.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues:
In my honest opinion the old Galaxy map was perfect. If you wanted to implement changes you should've improved the old UI: it had all the information needed and it had short legend text for every layer.

Sincerely a player that love Elite...that is really sad about the state of this rushed expansion.

In general, I feel like the updated UI (Not only the galaxy and system maps) has increased the number of clicks you have to make in order to execute most actions. I'll be giving some examples in this post and some ways this could be remedied while still keeping the new UI.

Galaxy Map

  • Plotting route and viewing system map
The primary use of the galaxy map is to plot routes, and for me that includes plotting routes to specific places within systems. The new galaxy map makes that more cumbersome by moving the buttons away from the center of the screen. Having the most important buttons, i.e. plot route and system map centered was a lot more convenient than having to move the mouse to the edge of the screen. I am aware that you can plot a route by holding down left click on the selected system, but that feels a lot more sluggish than two quick left clicks to me. This could be solved by implementing the same or a similar panel to the one that used to appear in the middle of the screen when selecting a system. (See picture 1)
Buttons centered.PNG

Picture 1

  • Changing "View Mode"
When changing the view mode of the galaxy map, e.g. changing to "Map Mode", having the view mode change when clicking the "Map Mode"-button (marked as 1 in picture 2), and not having to specify which map mode by clicking e.g. "Allegiance" (marked as 2 in picture 2) would make the map feel more responsive.
View Mode.PNG

Picture 2

  • Bookmarks
+ Having the bookmarks sorted by systems, bodies, stations, etc. is nice.

- Being able to plot a route to, edit, and delete bookmarks with a few simple buttons at the side of the bookmarks (As shown in picture 3) instead of having to enter "Manage Bookmarks" to do most of these things would remove a lot of unnecessary clicks.
Bookmarks.PNG

Picture 3

  • System Focus
In the new galaxy map, when selecting a system by clicking on it, you have to click on it twice for the focus to shift to it. In the old galaxy map you only had to click on a system once for the focus to shift to it, which makes the map feel more responsive.

The ring that shows which system is selected in the galaxy map does not line up properly, as shown in picture 4.
Focused system not lined up.PNG

Picture 4

  • Search Box
+ The addition of a dropdown showing places matching what you have typed into the search box is great!

- Not being able to hit the enter key to focus on the system you have typed into the search box is annoying. E.g. typing "Sol" and pressing enter does not shift the focus to Sol. Instead you have to either select Sol in the dropdown or press the button to the right of the search box.

  • Marker Colours
I do not like the change to the colours of the markers in the galaxy and system map. Bookmarks, engineers, route markers, and fuel star markers are the same orange colour, and stored ships and community goals are the same yellow. This makes it more difficult to differentiate the markers at a quick glance. This could be solved by making them the colours they were before, e.g. engineers purple, stored ships white, etc.

Hi FDev!

Alrighty, took some time to map out the UI for the galaxy/system map; probably too much time...but that's my fault.

I took the liberty to make a whimsical boards denoting user interactions:
  1. Galaxy Map: https://whimsical.com/galaxy-comparison-analysis-CW3hXAhcSoGFGHxSmXkZvS
  2. System Map: https://whimsical.com/systems-comparison-analysis-96YmyPULAYMBmpP968dLx1
A few house keeping things, in each whimsical board:
  • Purple Background = Odyssey Galaxy/System Map Left Menu
  • Teal Background = Odyssey Galaxy/System Map Right Menu
  • White Background = Horizon
  • Each red arrow should represent a user interaction, whether mouse click, keyboard typing, or otherwise.
  • Not accounted for: Actual user interactions on the map itself (clicking star systems and planets, for example)
  • Not accounted for: Search functionality for star systems on the galaxy map
Quickly looking at the board, one might note that compared to Horizons:
  1. The menus are fanned out; probably too much.
  2. Bookmark functionality has nested complexity
  3. Menu items must be hovered over before knowing what they mean (at least initially)
  4. Menus are icon intensive (which is difficult for new users)

I don't want to spend time being overly critical, as there's quite a few posts on here that can say what is wrong re: the UI more than I can.

The rest is me rambling about UX (feel free to skip):

As for possible recommendations and/or possible ideas regarding future UI/UX development:
  • One could map user workflows on these types of maps (perhaps done better than this).
    • One might assume an educated user and an uneducated user.
      • How many clicks/actions would it take an uneducated user to accomplish a particular task?
      • How many clicks/actions would it take an educated user to accomplish a particular task?
  • One might ask "What kind of information is the user getting out of this interaction?"
    • If its the same semantic information as the prior UI, what is the utility of the UI change?
    • Is it to accommodate future features?
    • Is it for alignment on a new design?
    • Is it something else?
    • Make sure this is well defined, as it might help with ascertaining the amount of learning/effort the user is willing to deal with.
  • A neat little UX Trick is Card Sorting: This involves a group of users being given a task to sort information (written on index cards) into information hierarchies.
    • This will help get a preliminary start on menu development from a user perspective.
    • This can be done internally (no need for external NDA), although it'd always be better to get your target audience involved (if possible).
    • It's quite fun too, and can probably be done in a team building exercise!
    • It's always good to do this multiple times, with different audiences. All because one group thinks one way, doesn't mean another group will. It's better to look for commonalities in each card sort.
    • Ref: https://www.usability.gov/how-to-and-tools/methods/card-sorting.html
    • Ref:
      Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxgMIEVcIMY
  • Another neat UX Trick is Paper Prototyping: This involves having a user interact with a paper mockup of the UI. Usually a recorded session, useful insight might be gathered by monitoring how users interact with the UI. If there's a problem, hey it's just paper. Tear it up, and make it anew :)! No dev/design time needed!
    • This is something that you will probably want to try with a group as close to your target audience as possible.
      • I take it that this is more complicated in the Gaming Industry, especially with their stringent NDAs.
        • Know that a lot of this work can be outsourced to specialized UX consultancies, and data can be "cleaned" and made anonymous enough that the functionality of the UI might be tested, while hiding company affiliation.
        • If you are willing to take a risk and involve your players, this might represent an excellent marketing opportunity. Have the users engage in a competition of some sort, something challenging, and the winner(s) might get a chance to visit FDev, and engage in a bit of actual UX testing.
          • Of course, a better way might be to anonymously draw a group of players together, based on their behavior, but...still, might be good for one session.
    • This is probably something you'll want to do repeatedly, with different groups.

    • Ref:
      Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMjozqJS44M
  • Last thing, an opinion (take it as you will): I love engineers, but unless you're making a product for engineers, you probably don't want them too involved with your UX design.
    • Speaking as an engineer, engineers are all too often business logic challenged and think in terms of their own stack. Having a group of people/perspective out of an engineer's perspective is incredibly valuable for feature development.
    • Engineers can, and should, be involved with UX design, but only after a UX design iteration is complete. And even then, it should be less about their opinions, and more about feasibility; if a UX change would involve an exorbitant amount dev work s.t. it's not realistic, then it's fair for them to push back. If it's because "it doesn't make sense to the engineer" then it shouldn't; the engineer is not the end-user (yes, even if they play the game ;-)).
      • In the case of pushback, UX would just rev again.
        • This is why UX should be kept "as light and nimble as possible".
      • Rapid UX iterations is definitely a plus.

Anyways, I think I've droned on and spent more than enough time on this. Shrug You might even know all of this already (and I wasted all this time for nothing sigh)!

Regardless, I believe in you! I believe you will figure all this UI stuff out and make the UI in Odyssey the best yet. Just keep on going!

P.S. Bruce is educated in Psychology...just saying.... :)

Overall thoughts
I like the general concept but specially in VR with limited keyboard controls I use by touch and no mouse navigating the maps have become more cumbersome.

Specific Issues
it takes too long and too much effort to exit both system and galaxy maps. Can't plot a course in galaxy map to a planet

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  • let Escape key exit the map to cockpit, not main menu. It already works like that in some menus, make it consistent
  • remove blockers between vertical menu item groups, they slow down and annoy
  • click to select sysytem, hold to plot course and double click or zoom in to go from galaxy map to system map
  • fix landable + atmosphere circles in VR
  • please also show first footfall in FSS, there is enough room next to discovered and mapped and it helps me decide whether to visit a planet or not
  • maybe combine planet info, is now separated in two panels. Or reorder not on basis of science but play value: discovered, first footfall, atmosphere, gravity, vulcanism, life are more important than mineral composition, rotation, inclination, azimuth etc.
  • allow me to delete bookmark of selected system
  • please fix DSS in VR, it is extremely irritating
  • please also fix the free camera mode in VR
  • please STOP resetting VR center between on foot and cockpit modes
  • please add 360 degree stereoscopic view as option for on foot in VR
  • please make VR and VR Cinematic selectable per mode of transportation (ship, srv, foot)

I assume I'll get used to the new maps. I haven't played much, but I've been unable to determine distances.

1. In the Horizons gal map, you could mouse over a star and see the jump distance in LY. The Odyssey gal map does not do that. I actually can't find that distance information anywhere on the map.

2. In the Horizons sys map, iirc it showed planetary super cruise distances from the sun in LS. I can't remember exactly how, either mouse over or click on the planet. I can't find this information anywhere on the Odyssey sys map.

I think the only place these distances show up are on the ship's HUD and navigation panel, but you need to jump into a system first to get the planetary super cruise distance. I assume I may not looking in the right place, but if so it doesn't seem very intuitive. Jump and Super Cruise distances were the primary reason I looked at maps.

Gal Map Items:
  1. When a CMDR selects an option in the "ROUTE SETTINGS" panel it needs to stay selected until that CMDR changes it. As of now, the options for that panel are reset whenever the program is run.
  2. When a CMDR has a route plotted and selects an option in the "ROUTE SETTINGS" panel that is different from the current selection(s); the route should be recalculated at the time of the selection.
  3. (Bug?) Once a setting is selected in the "ROUTE SETTINGS" panel, that panel cannot be set to having 0 items checked. This requires a program restart to resolve. ...pitting it in a vicious battle against #1
  4. When typing an exact match into the search bar, a CMDR should not need to click a returned search result to select a target. A CMDR should be able to use the enter key to continue.
  5. A CMDR should be able to long-press the system marker, above or below the star, as well as the star itself when selecting or plotting to a system.
  6. A CMDR should have the ability to see what friendly/unfriendly CMDRs are in a system tagged with the friend icon.
Sys Map Items:
  1. Ground-based combat zone information (intensity, faction participation, selected faction, CZ location, etc.) should be available to a CMDR from his/her own system map rather than exclusively from Frontline Solutions.
    • This can be gated via docking with a station similar to acquiring market information for a system.

EDITS: Clarity, addition of sys map section, item additions.

If want to keep this bad UI, let us at least jump into Horizon when need to use UI more. Don't change the UI in Horizon to this travesty, thanks.

Please, allow unbind F10 from screenshots. Game allows to set this key for other things and additionaly it do screenshot. While it was not a problem with Horizons, just trashing files, it seems on Odessey it consumes huge resource.
Please add any setting anywhere to unmap "high resolution screenshot F10" so it will not do that.

There's an issue with squadron bookmarks around planets when there's a squadron Fleet Carrier docked there. Instead of just showing the bookmarked carrier it shows a squadron bookmark for every asset around that planet, whether that's a station, outpost or non bookmarked Fleet Carrier. The UI also doesn't show the name of the Fleet Carrier until you click on it, making it even harder to find the right one. This issue is also in Horizons.

UI Galaxy Map Overall thoughts I prefer it to the old iteration, but it needs refinement! (y)
  1. Navigation: Poor, flicking between the left/righthandside is counterproductive, very time consuming, and needs streamlining, especially regards vertical sub-tabs. Far too many tabs to be useful, or let me get rid of those I deem so. Why default to the top sub-tab, rather than the last used sub-tab? I like zoom to planetview from system map without needing to select an additional tab, pity I cannot select and then zoom into a chosen system from galaxy map. However, copious opaque vertically stacked icons in system view obscure that default zoom system view (which is not really an issue with the default zoom galaxy map view.) Otherwise I much prefer this iteration of Galaxy Map!
  2. Sub-tabs ie Map Mode: Last used colour key does not persist if you revisit or hover that tab. Why default me to the top sub-tab "Map Mode Allegance" rather than "Map Mode State" that I used last?
  3. Search: Search function is wasted opportunity. I like that bookmarked systems appear first, more useful than the actual bookmark tab!
  4. Bookmarks: Not enough colour, too much orange. Why do I have to rename all of it, rather than just add personal note after ie [Artemis 2] or [Geo] or [Blackmarket] or [Heavy fines!].
  5. Target/Destination tabs: Does not transfer to ship HUD correctly. Planetary view tab is often greyed out for every plaent of an entire system, despite DSS scans and planetary landing having occured.
  6. Trade Routes: 'All' needs a 'deselect All' toggle. "Compare in commodities market" does not work/do anything/transition to this.

Specific Issues
  1. Navigation: Vertically stacked icons/markers obscure many of the adjacent system planets/orbitals above. (I can have a bookmark+ship location+friend+mission+target stacked.) Constantly have to adjust zoom to compensate. Also, 'Commodity market comparison' does not work.
  2. Sub tabs ie Map Mode Key: Defaults to the top sub-tab. Every single time I wish to refresh myself as to the colour key ie state/economy, I have to start afresh from map mode > vertically scroll to 'Economy' colour key or whatever. Too much vertical scrolling of every single sub-tab list - just default to last used to start with!
  3. Search function intolerant of partially completed destinations, and is not smart. Search results do not seem logically ordered. Seems to prioritise systems many, many Ly away rather than nearby ports/hubs. (Excepting bookmarked ones.)
  4. Bookmarks: Orange overload. Management & editing is slow and not intuitive. Edit function overwrites entire existing name.
  5. Target/Destination tabs: Does not transfer to HUD, frequently loses plotted route when temporarily selecting another target nearby for a stop-off. On gamepad, "hold A" to set route does not work, no keybind to adjust this either; I have to go click both target and then plot route tabs on the righthandside (galaxy and system and planetside.)
  6. Trade Routes: Inefficient having to untick all the boxes to just view one specific commodity. Buy system's commodity data is borked, and/or a hidden option?

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
  1. Navigation: "View system map" ought to be the 2nd uppermost righthandside tab. Within system map; a minimum of a Vertical-Horizontal transition toggle to prevent stacked icons/bookmarks/markers obscuring too much of the system needs implementation. A smart North/East/South/West spill out of those stacked icons would be even better! Make the icons much less opague? I wish I could just select and zoom into a system from the galaxy map (as with planetview from system) bypassing yet another tab selection. Ability to hide tabs that I do not use/do not work imho, with auto reshuffle to reorganise remaining tabs.
  2. Sub-tabs ie Map Mode: Hover over the map mode tab to view last, or at least sticky hold to last used sub-tab and its colour key, or implement a pushpin lock for the colour key. Apply this to all the tab menus; defaults to the last used sub-tab, rather than make me vertically scroll and read each and every sub-tab once more to find
  3. Search: Ability to order search results by nearest/alphabetical. Perhaps push recently visited systems/ports near the top as with bookmarked ones. Apply colour to the orange list to show whether mission (blue) or previously visited or not (or current map mode colours?) as minimum overhaul.
  4. Bookmarks: Add more coloured bookmark iconography! Easier editing please! I wish to add personal note/tag afterwards ie [Landmines], not change its original name.
  5. Target/Destination: Re-work of target/route persistence to ship HUD. Custom keybinding option required please, pertaining to galaxy/system/planetary map destinations. Fix greyed out planetary tab preventing route targetting.
  6. Trade Routes: 'All' could be a toggle, select all/deselect all.

Overall thoughts
The Galaxy and System maps do not seem to be designed around the most common use-cases for this tools.

Specific Issues
As an example, I cannot quickly set a route to a bookmarked station. The option to do this is buried in a "manage bookmarks" page. The primary purpose of bookmarks is not to be managed, it is to allow a cmdr to locate select/target/route to specific locations quickly.

Suggested Fixes for the Issues
The for above example, just add a "Set As Destination" button on the bookmark list (or handle by holding mouse down, as in other places). However, the general comment here is about identify the most frequently used use-cases for these tools, and prioritizing those for effecient work-flows.

A simple like cannot reinforce this message enough. The new UI is utterly awful for bookmark use. The whole point of the stupid thing is to set a course to a predetermined location VERY QUICKLY. In Horizons, that worked not only with systems but also with specific bodies in systems and locations on those bodies Select bookmark, select plot route... THE END. It worked.

In the new UI, selecting an engineer bookmark (or any other planetary surface bookmark) requires selecting the galaxy map bookmark (which just opens up the engineer's system instead of offering to plot a route), manually selecting the system menu in the new right side menu, drilling into the system map, selecting the planet the engineer is on via the bookmark AGAIN or finding the correct bookmark in the system (because all the colour coding is garbage now - why are engineers no longer purple?), selecting the body in question, selecting the planetary map option, drilling down AGAIN, then spinning the globe until you find the bookmarked location and clicking the location to call up the final bloody right side menu so you can finally set your route.

What halfwit thought this was an improvement over how Horizons managed bookmarks? Did the UI designers never actually try to existing UI or the new one? It is impossible to miss how much less functional this is. The new UI is some incredibly cumbersome and awkward.

EXTRA SUGGESTION: ALL missions should have the option to plot route to the mission site as a button right beside the "open in galaxy map" button. Manually hunting and pecking through the garbage UI to plot a route is absurd when the mission data is literally in your ship's computer as a temporary bookmark (a mission marker). We should be able to just select the mission and click a "set route" icon. Our ship's computer clearly knows exactly where it is.

all i have to say about the galaxy map is that i don't understand anything, well, if I understand, but you have to get used to looking as much on the left side as on the right side.

I found myself more than once looking for information for several minutes. And I still haven't figured out how to find out which station the interstellar factors are on, for example.

Greetings Commanders,

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you for supporting us throughout Odyssey’s development and at launch. For those of you who have access to the expansion and are able to play without issues, we hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

That said, we are aware of some commonly reported issues and will take this opportunity to address them. In this post, we’d like to specifically discuss optimisation and UI.

Optimisation and Performance

We’re aware that performance in Odyssey is varied according to PC builds and other factors. While many players are enjoying the game at the intended standard, unfortunately some are not.

If you are experiencing performance issues, here’s how to report them and include some especially useful information. Please send us as much information as possible to edoperformance@elitedangerous.com using the template below. To report any other issues, please go via the Issue Tracker as normal.

Please provide as much information as you can from a DXDiag report (see link for help)

Where were you in-game, and what were you doing? (Solo/Open, in Wing/group or not etc.)

Are you running Odyssey in borderless/fullscreen/windowed?

Are you running Odyssey in VR?

Do you have any other apps running at the same time?

Are you running any third-party shader suites?

In addition to the above, please send us your graphics configs. To do this:

1. Navigate to this file location: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics
2. Copy all folder contents to a ZIP file and attach it to your submission

We’d like to thank you in advance for submitting this information. Your reports will be invaluable in assisting our team and expediting performance fixes.

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

While fundamental issues such as connection and performance remain a priority, we’d like to build a clear understanding of issues surrounding features such as UI to lay the groundwork for in-game improvements.

In this thread, we are looking specifically for feedback on the Galaxy and System Map UI. We have noted feedback on other UI elements, but would like to start with these in particular.

If you have feedback on the Galaxy and System Map in Odyssey, please leave it below in a reply using the following format:

Overall thoughts – please keep this brief (one or two sentences)

Specific Issues – clear and concise (bullet points are ideal)

Suggested Fixes for the Issues – clear and concise, directly linked to the issues

Please keep all replies to this post in the format above. Any discussion that is off topic or replying to other posts may be removed to keep the thread as useful as possible.

Thank You

Odyssey represents a huge change to Elite Dangerous at multiple levels. All of the teams across Frontier, are working hard to deliver an experience that meets a standard the community deserves.

On that note, thank you again for your support and patience. As soon as we have any more information regarding the points above, we’ll make sure to share it with you.

o7

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
Thanks for this thread Bruce. This should make optimisation reporting a bit more direct, and I'll send the necessary to the appropriate.

As for the UI, my own experience (and I may have missed out others based on what I've seen so far):

Overall:

In all honesty, I like the new maps for the most part. The orange interface takes a lot of getting used to compared to the black and white interface of old, and organising the big unwieldy side bar to give the map more screen real estate seems like a step forward. The galaxy map search bar taking pride of place at the top is fine, especially as it was one of the most used functions, and great that it offers suggestions as you type now so that I make fewer mistakes. I also like the new "copy name" function for the third party guys - and, I assume, to communicate with others by text easier. 😜 On the system map, sorting out points of interest is much better now. For both maps, I like the new function to hold to target or untarget a location, especially as now the hit box is bigger vs the Alpha and it becomes second nature.

Issues and suggestions (based on functions that need to improve as opposed to bugs that simply need a suggestion of "fix pks kthx")

1) Searches - as has been reported by some, the old search function whereby a partially filled in location cycles through possibilities is missed now.

Suggestion: offer a small search results popup when a partially filled name is entered and searched for, staying on screen all the time while you cycle through the systems, and hitting Enter cycles through all the results one by one.

2) Map information sidebars - it is cumbersome to reclick on the side bars for relevant information when an object is selected on the galaxy or system maps. In particular, I am used to seeing the information tab popping up straight away on the old maps.

Suggestion: when an object is selected, have the Info sidebar pop up immediately to give basic info on the object, with the option for other sidebar info to be shown at the player's discretion. Even better, have a setting to allow the player to pick and choose which sidebar information immediately pops up when an object is selected eg if the player is interested in markets or info or discoveries or the science bits etc.

3) Map Filters - I can understand from a certain perspective that filters are separated into user based filters (places visited etc) and galactic info filters eg services, governments, states, allegiances. However, this seems very arbitrary and adds to needless clicks. It might be that the intention is to combine statistic filters with user filters, but there is a better way.

Suggestion: reincorporate the filters to a single menu - but on top of this, allow multiple filters to be applied, eg system state and economy type and security together if one were to look for, say, an Anarchy Industry system in Famine that you have already visited before.

4) System map planetary phases - in the Alpha the planets were set up arbitrarily in a way that you could not tell if the location you were going to was in daytime or night. This could be important for missions where lighting or night vision could make the difference.

Suggestion: have real time planetary day/night terminators displayed to accurately display which parts are in the daytime and which are at night.

5) Mapping and the System Map - yes, clicking on the system map objects tells us if the object is mapped by you or not, but I think this can be improved further, especially in light of the DSS heat maps

Suggestion: show the heat maps on the planetary bodies where applicable on the planetary view of the system map, set to All by default with options to cycle between them in the planetary view. This, combined with the real time terminator, means you can see where the heat maps are in a better way than having to get into supercruise to use the DSS etc which is tedious and time wasting.

6) Exobiology status: planets do (somewhere) tell you how many Biologicals are on the planet, but not what, how many or which ones you have sampled partially or fully and subsequently catalogued with Vista Genomics. The potential for retreading old ground is therefore very high.

Suggestion: either expand the further detail tab on the system map for the planet, or add an Exobiology tab listing the number, general type of life, specific species listed and their sampling and cataloguing status. Furthermore, add an Exobiology summary status tab in the cockpit, collating all this info in the Transaction panel on your cockpit - and perhaps also an Exploration tab listing data of all systems you have scanned. (Makes sense to have it in Transactions rather than Inventory as these are lost if you die.)

7) Smuggling - for the life of me I cannot find the information listing which goods are illegal in a system.

Suggestions: add the information on prohibited goods to the market information tab on the system map.

8) Bookmarks - I knew I forgot a big thing. 😜 It is nice that bookmarks separate name from location, and own bookmarks from squadron ones. But these need to do so much more. Also, it is less easy to target and plot to a bookmark, be it a system, body station or port. Often this needs to go via the system map from the galaxy map and vice versa. Also, also, it would be very nice to have more clear differences between bookmarks of different objects, either by an obvious symbol or a different colour.

Suggestions: a lot of suggestions to improve bookmarks...

Firstly, use the innovative "hold to target" function so that it works on the bookmarks menu itself, no matter which map you are in. To simply go to the bookmarks menu and plot to a system, body, station or port either in galaxy map or system map would be a small change, but would make an immense difference to quality of life.

Secondly: allow more opportunities to make custom bookmark groups. We have general ones and squadron ones, but also have other categories we can make for ourselves like xeno, exploration, markets, anarchies, etc.

Thirdly, more clearer symbols or colours to differentiate between bookmarks would be nice.

Fourthly, please let us access the galaxy and system map bookmarks from the cockpit as well, in a separate tab on the Nav panel if necessary. Also, let us bookmark objects from the Nav panel and the FSS please.

Finally, please increase the number of bookmarks from 128 to at least 512. Many of us have reasons to bookmark things.

9) General feature request: please also add the following to the system map:

Notable stellar phenomena to the Points of Interest tab
Tourist beacons, Nav Beacons, etc. to the Points of Interest tab
Found megaships and other special structures
Mining hotspots to planetary ring information
Geological heat maps to mapped planets

Many thanks. There are probably many other issues but I may add them later.

Edit: please use the edoperformance@elitedangerous.com mailbox to report optmisation issues in Odyssey rather than the Issue Tracker.
As an explorer I use the Gal Map for selecting my next target in the following way in Horizon:
1. Open Galmap
2. Move the target circle in the direction I want to go until I reach a distance of about 2000 ly, an information easily obtained by hovering over a particular star
3. Open the star-type filter on the left side (it stays open while I keep moving in the Gal Map)
4. Deselect all common star types until only O- and B- and non-sequence stars are left
5. Start inspecting the remaining stars, again by hovering over them, to see which one is particularly interesting
6. Potentially reselect step by step star types to get more stars. Since the filter on the left side stays open that's a simple task
7. Bookmark my target (since routing tends to fail sometimes in which case I lose my target. If I keep looking and decide for a different target, it is easy to remove the bookmark and put on a different target
8. Reselect all star types I want to include in the routing
9. Plot route

In Odyssey there is
  • no hovering, instead I have to click on every star I am interested in
  • AND may have to click on the info-icon on the right side to get the desired information.
  • When I make changes in the star type filter it closes every time I click somewhere else and need to re-open it again.
  • Removing a bookmark requires to open the bookmark manager (many clicks)

So in general I am constantly clicking between stars and menus to do the same work which in Horizons only requires mostly hovering and very few clicks. Clearly a loss in efficiency.

On to System Map usage:
  • Again, no hovering anymore. Everything needs to be clicked and then more clicks to actually see the detailed information. In Horizons I select the details page and then hover will show the relevant information of the according object.
  • The information of details which was on on page in Horizons has now been separated into two parts, each needing to be clicked separately once a target has been selected.
  • The same applies of course for the Orrery View. In fact I had hoped for a key binding since I often need to switch between the two of them.
  • And why is one of the most important information, i.e. "terraformable" still not simply shown as an icon directly at the planet? It is one of the critical features of a planet that influences whether it should be mapped or not.

I think the general point here is, all the information is still there, the UI looks nice, but pretty much every information is now more hidden and much more cumbersome to reach. This information should help me explore not become exploration in its own right, that's not what the game is all about.

I believe in a first step "simply" re-introducing the display of the most important info when hovering (e.g. the info-panel from the top right icon), allowing to remove bookmarks directly would already go a long way in improving the experience.

1) I agree with everything discussed
2) System map assets for planets take a long time to load first time
3) Planetary Combat Zones need to clearly show at a glance who's fighting
4) When I select the (i) information card, I expect it to stay up until toggled away. Rather than disappearing every time I select a new item
5) Can we have team/wing pathfinding? We have efficient and fast, when in team/wing mode can we have a third button appear that goes to the jump range of the lowest denominator please?

First, despite some of the issues I'd like to thank and congratulate FDev for such a huge effort and stunning product. My overall impression of the new UI is positive. Once I got use to it, it's at least as good as the older UI and in many cases better. However there are a couple of specific issue that I think should be addressed.

1. Bookmarks in the galaxy map. In the old UI, when selecting a book mark there was the option to navigate to that location even if that location was a station inside a system. I don't find that in the new UI. If I'm in sothis for example and want to return to Robigo Mines, I used to be able to open the galaxy map, pick the Robigo Mines bookmark, then navigate a course all the way to the station with one click- perfect. In the new UI, I pick the bookmark and it moves the map cursor to Robigo, but then I have to open the system map and pick Robigo Mines - If I'm just missing something here, please correct me.

2. Ship selection. Most importantly when scrolling through my ships, I need to be able to see what equipment is on them without switching to that ship. I think there is room in the upper part of the screen to show that.

3. Ship selection. Allow the left and right scrolling the wrap around. For example, I go the the ship selection screen and it shows me my least expensive ships, but I want to pick my most expensive. I have to scroll all the way to the right rather and one click to the left (to wrap around)

UI Feedback

Overall thoughts – UI is not colorblind friendly and Icons need names. Also Bookmarking and deleting and organising.

Specific Issues –
  • low contrast of text and icons make it difficult to read and see.
  • red text is impossible for the colorblind (Especially for console players)
  • no accessibility options
  • icons take less space but they are not second nature and recognisable to all, especially new players
  • adding bookmarks is easy but not as removing them
  • bookmarks need to be organized or sort based on player choice
  • search for systems should display suggestions

Suggested Fixes for the Issues –
  • red background or highlighting of the text with clear bold contrasting colors for text and outline border (white text with black border on red background )
  • Brighter red, orange, green, yellow, blue, purp or higher contrast or saturation
  • accessibility options with sliders to select colors for elements like red text , warning text, enemy ship, insufficient funds, illicit cargo etc. (Especially for console players)
  • when icons are selected or highlighted are to display the name.
  • an option to display icons only, or text only, or both
  • if the star system is not bookmarked, a plus (+) to add. If it is added, then the icon shou turn to negative (-) to remove, then ask to confirm the removal with optio to never ask again (reservable in the options menus)
  • create folders to organise Bookmarks or add tags from a list or type your own
  • like any search engine, it should suggest and give options to the item you want. Searching for a system to travel to should not be any different. It is 3307.
