Odyssey - Optimisation/Performance and UI (Galaxy & System Map) Feedback

My main concern I had was with the UI menu, it had many features from the old UI menu missing or hidden without any sort of start up guide/training for the new UI menu (Not everyone watched all the Alpha YouTube videos), where maybe for a short time it had pop up bubbles to show you were a certain function or feature was.

Outfitting menu;
ISSUE - You can't see the engineering information on your stored modules in one click - you have to load the module onto your ship to view the new modifications tab.
SOLUTION - Have the same modifications tab available across the stored modules and loaded modules

ISSUE - You cant 'transfer' your stored module onto your ship directly from the stored module section (Which was available in the old UI)
SOLUTION - Make the transfer module to ship facility available again in the stored module section

Galaxy Map Bookmarks;
ISSUE - I actually cried when I saw this change (And YES I'm female). I had set out my bookmarks so all my top used bookmarks were right where i needed them. you categorised my bookmarks and they were all over the sections. I found it too much to deal with by that point, It took my a long time, I'd say months to organise my bookmarks and they were changed to which I would need to have resorted them all out again. And as you already know we need far more bookmarks that just what we have now.
SOLUTION - GIVE CONTROL of JUST the bookmarks section to the user. Allow THEM to organise and categorise their bookmarks how they want and I'd say 500-1000 bookmarks per CMDR would be a nice thing for us to have please.

ISSUE - I used to be able to plot a route direct to the location of a site, planetary ring, planet or station in one click from the bookmark - it plotted the route direct to the position you had bookmarked. This is now missing and you have to highlight the star, planet or moon, then open the system map and then target where you want to plot to... Too Many clicks now than was previously.
SOLUTION - Go back to the old plot route direct to where your bookmark is set to.

ISSUE - The whole Pilot/Station/Ship Outfitting colour scheme is incompatible and the new yellow colour makes me physically nauseous (NO JOKE). After around an hour of wandering around in the pilot equip and suit menus I was feeling sick. The yellow colour is all wrong. It doesn't go with the original Orange and Blue. After navigating through the menu and then trying to play Odyssey I had to stop playing as I felt really nauseous.
SOLUTION - 2 options
1. Change the UI colour theme to make it able to be chosen by the user to suit their colour preferences. Have a colour scheme menu either in the livery or in the options of the main ED menu to change the colours of the UI menus and also the cockpit colours to suit the user.
2. Change the colour scheme of the UI menu and remove the yellow and replace it with maybe a teal blue, off white, mid green or red.

GamePlay;
ISSUE - Landing on an atmospheric planet and attempting to get out on foot and being told that it is dangerous to disembark. The issue here is not knowing that you cannot step out on foot, and only finding this out when you arrive, and land on a planet and in some cases do not have an SRV on board to continue exploration.
SOLUTION - In the System Map have information to tell you if the targeted planet is 'On Foot Exploration Available' (OFEA), or some form of visible detail like when you can see the graphic for if it's landable, has an atmosphere etc.

ISSUE - The NPC A.I is too high against one or two users. I tried to play and I found that you get swarmed by too many NPC's even after you have cloned an ID. I believe that once you've cloned an ID, when you're scanned they will read the ID you have cloned and 'Not Know' that you're not that ID, so they shouldn't immediately attack you for that, they should let you go on your way.
When they do alert against you, and call other NPC's you are swarmed and they never seem to run out of ammo or get good damage from you're weapons. In short, you die far quicker than they do. and switching weapons is either too slow or too much to get a good win.
SOLUTION - turn down the A.I alertness, allow for the user to hide and the NPC's go back to their roles, allow the Cloning ID to do as it should, fool the NPC's into thinking you are who you have cloned and let you go about the base as they would allow the original ID person would.
If a person has been killed and been discovered, the NPC's flood to the dead person and not towards the user unless he/she is in the vicinity and then alert against them.
Make the weapon switching faster and the ammo levels a lot higher. Reduce the NPC's ammo to where they run out and have to go find more like we do.

ISSUE - Pilot accessories costs and engineering are way too high
SOLUTION - Reduce it. Grinding is hard enough as it is for a ship, which takes sometimes 2 to 3 days to acquire the materials and then do the engineering. the suits and weapons engineering from what I've seen on videos is much higher and much worse of a grind.

ISSUE - Embark/Disembark - It just doesn't 'work'. If we are meant to be having this 'Armstrong moment', then we needed to at least walk up and down the escalator into the cockpit of the ship, or some form of user interaction to board and leave your ship or SRV. Simply teleporting in and out isn't right, it feels unnatural. I as a user, stood in front of my Mamba's stairs and in the blue circle and could not walk up those stairs, but instead was teleported up, which was so awful. It then brought up a question; that if you can teleport into and out of your ship and SRV, why do you have to use a taxi to go to a mission site or your ship (taking sometimes 15-20 mins to reach your destination!), why can you not use this 'teleport' you've created ?!?!?!?!
SOLUTION - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, put in some form of user interactive Embark/Disembark at the very least, or the ship interiors (Please face it, many many many, CMDRS WANT IT)... Please

Finally I want to say, I really really wanted to love this expansion, I got goose bumps from the official trailer and I was talking about this with my boyfriend for weeks, and we both eagerly anticipated this release, I even bought a new copy of ED on the frontier PC platform in preparation for the Odyssey release and synced my Steam ED profile up to that so I could play it without having to use Steam.

I am really happy with the general layout of the new UI, but feel it needs a few tweaks.

Galaxy Map

  • Honestly, the GalMap is pretty well finished in my books. I sometimes use the Market Info tab to plot a route directly to a destination in-system without having to enter the System Map, so maybe adding the PoI list from the System Map to the tabs on the right would be nice (it would certainly make that functionality seem more intentional)
  • EDIT: Can't believe I forgot one of my oldest requests— the "use jet cone boost" routing option currently uses the system's parent body as the sole criterion for determining the boost. As the option was broken on initial release of Odyssey, I got used to directly targeting my destination system— and this is the option that works even for secondary pulsars. I would find the jet cone boost option more useful if it also considered secondary stars, even if far away from arrival, or if it could at least take into account a boost from a secondary star that I've already gotten

System/Planetary Map

  • When in Planetary Map, the "Factions" and "Points of Interest" lists should show only those Factions/PoIs present on the planet selected
  • When selecting surface PoIs from the list, the PoIs themselves should be selected and focused in the Planetary Map, instead of selecting and focusing the body which hosts the PoI in the System Map
  • Holding the selection button on a PoI should plot a route to it
  • When in Planetary Map, "Description" shows name, distance, economy, threat level, and faction info, while "Features" shows... name and distance again, and facilities. These tabs can likely be combined
  • When in Planetary Map, the "Organics" tab is useless, unless there's (upcoming?) gameplay involving organics specific to PoIs that I don't know about yet

Both

  • I am not especially a fan of the tabs along the right hiding themselves when nothing is selected. They can all be greyed out to indicate their lack of functionality without a system/body/PoI selected for context, but vanishing/hidden UI is not great for discoverability. I'd even suggest leaving Planetary Information where it is in System Map in the Planetary Map, too, instead of moving it across the screen and hiding it under a submenu to make room for redundant Features/Description tabs and a useless Organics tab, if not for the fact that these buttons all disappear when zooming in to the Planetary View, anyway...
  • While I'm wishing, it'd be nice if you could switch between the System and Galaxy maps by zooming, the same way that you can switch between Planetary and System maps. It would add more of a sense of continuity between the two otherwise pretty disparate mapping modes
  • EDIT: When returning to the Galaxy Map from the System Map with the "Back" button, the Galaxy Map should retain focus of the system in question, instead of returning to the current system

I forgot to include this in my original list:

iu

And that was to fix fleet carrier representation in the System Map.

So why did you bury yourself in rewriting all the GOOD parts of the Horizons UI instead?

Let us have a RESET button for filters in the galaxy map and add select all/clear option for each group.
Also, please make it apply ALL of the filters. If I select outbreak and extraction, let it show me only the extraction with outbreak and not extraction or outbreak only.

Except things which were said numerous times already, PLEASE, if we are in system or galaxy map and is used key 'Esc', let it close actually opened map and do not enter game menu. Thanks.

Overall I like the Galaxy Map and System Map UI. Some mouse over tooltip boxes with core information might be nice, but not essential to have. After playing since launch, the issues I have run into:

ISSUES:
  • When exiting System Map and returning to the Galaxy Map, the focus is on the current system you are in instead of the last selected system. This makes exploring the GalMap tedious.
  • Focus on current system in GalMap seems to be broken. Option in Options seems to do nothing.
  • Number of bookmarks is too limited
SOLUTIONS
  • Returning to GalMap when exiting System Map should focus and center on the last selected system (i.e the one which system map was just opened.)
  • Pressing the keybind for Focus current system in GalMap should focus and center n the system you are in
  • Increase the limit for bookmarks beyond 128. 1024 would be a nice lower bound.

First of all: I play under Linux/Proton (current Proton version). I have played over 400h in Horizon. I am playing under Xubuntu 20.4 and with the Nvidia driver 460.80 on a GTX 970.

I would actually be satisfied with Odyssey for now. The performance is not outstanding, but it is acceptable. BUT: After some time (30 minutes to an hour) the game (in space) becomes extremely slow. The trigger is always a call to the system or galaxy map.

When I switch back to normal mode, the frame rate collapses. Permanently. From 60 FPS to maybe 20. Once this happens, I can often fix it by calling up the system map again and leaving it again. But at some point the performance drop remains and I have to restart. That's no fun.

@Bruce G

This seems to be avoiding the elephant in the room somewhat. Isn't it the engine that's the problem, ie it's nothing to do with the specs of people's machines?

Having people submit various tickets seems to be a bit of a run around. ED just seems completely unoptimised, no amount of looking at logs and specs and driver versions is going to help fix that.
I mean, yes but since it seems Horizons doesn't have the same lack of culling issues I presume that means it's absolutely fixable at some point, possibly even easily. I don't think Odyssey uses a totally new rendering engine, does it? Possibly just a huge screw up/oversight from some team, "oh crap I thought you were doing that" sort of scenario.

Let's see what coming weeks brings. Luckily I'm in the 3090 club, so am playing and having fun. But it sucks for people who have mid range cards to not really be able to play and enjoy it.

As for system map UI, it's not terrible, but some of the fixes others have suggested are warranted. It could use a "tweaks" pass.

Outfitting is worse, need a better way to see what the changes will do to your stats. Also, I keep getting confused when trying to outfit a hard point because it shows me what's equipped in another hard point for some reason, like if you have 2 medium and one has a laser, and you click into the empty one and go into lasers, it shows you the laser you already have there, it's in yellow, but still. Confuses me every time.

I'd also like sorting/filtering of some kind in stored modules if possible. Or to see modules that are in a ship that's stored, can you do that now? I haven't found it if so.

Quality of life stuff:

Service All button - a single click to Repair ALL structural elements ; ALL internal modules ; ALL external modules ; restock ALL modules ; restock all vehicles ; restock all fighters and refuel to FULL .
That would be great.

Powerplay Collect menu : some genius out there managed to ADD a couple of EXTRA clicks to an already very intensive click activity, a player wishing to maintain maximum rank will have to click at least 600 times on a game menu each week, a player that would want to get from rank 1 to rank 5 in one go would need to click 6000 times...
I know PP would get no love but at least keep it as it was.

I know this is not related to map / outfitting and that probably no action will be forthcoming, but if its not discussed now we will never see any improvements on this matters.

I'm sorry but this thread and most of the people in it are all insane. You're just playing FD's stupid game... as above a "repair all" button!! We had that we had that on a short menu when we landed and we had that in the main menu's.

Literally nothing needed to be changed and this thread is completely pointless.

REVERT TO THE ORIGINAL UI

If they wanted to revert to the original UI, they wouldn't have had this thread. Instead, read this as "we want to keep our actual UI, while pretending to ask you what you wanted so it seems we're actually listening."

Yes. But it’s disappointing the people here are playing along so willingly when the answers are obvious:

1 FD Clearly don’t care so they won’t do anything substantive to improve the UI

and

2 The obvious answer - revert to the original UI.

That there is a screenshot taken on a planet ,the SRV is with its front wheels in the air, it looks like there is anobstacle, if it has not been done correctly ,like an invisible wall and I stand for it and have this screenshot from the first person perspective done what I wanted to say ,there are still too many errors in the DLC,Elite: Odyssey ,that cannot be fixed in ashort time ,unless it happens a miracle and manufacturers are finally playing this game themselves to see how many errors you have built in yourself.

Well just in case someone is paying attention:

On Horizons you can see the Fortification state of a system (Power Play) from the map itself, not on Odyssey you need to acess another screen to do that. This was very pratical now its more time wasted.
Not related but when choosing rewards from a mission (after completing it) I get half information about rewards like "[Rarity Gra", yes missing some letters.

Overall I think this UI is more clicks and less inormation, how could this be a good idea is beyond me. And yes revertiong to Horizons UI does seem to be the best option.

Greetings Commanders,

UI Feedback

We’re also keenly aware of feedback on several aspects of the updated User Interface in Odyssey. The comments on this topic have been followed closely since the beginning of the alpha phase and your feedback shared in our Alpha feedback forum has been gathered and collected. Your concerns over the ease-of-use and accessibility of these systems are being heard and passed to the development team.

Hello @Bruce G

Given there were some small changes to the map in the last update, and given the roadmap has the map getting a major update at the end of June, should we continue to comment on this thread? If not, how should additional feedback on the map UI be submitted?

Here's my view on the System Map UI.

I've put most options in order of use. Also, merging some functions and removing not necessary ones.

Another point is, on Horizons when the player clicked a star, planet or station they had access to basic info with just one click. Wish I could see something similar.

System map (info).png

- Justification: Items 1 and 2 on right panel:
The majority of players click both buttons (description/features) to gather info on biology, geological signals and planet materials, so both info should sit together in one tab/button. If not possible, insert a advanced planetary info tab (item 2.1) exclusively for mass, gravity, rotation and etc.

1. Description tab.png

- Justification for removed or merged buttons:
1. Market information: Should be integrated into station features (item 2).
2. Stored ships: Merge with local fleet as both display almost the same information:
Local fleet - Copy.png

3. View planetary map: Not necessary. Should be integrated to the bottom legend with a keybind, or just be removed.
4. Focus: Not necessary. Should be integrated to the bottom legend with a keybind, or just be removed.
5. Plot route: Not necessary. Should be integrated to the bottom legend with a keybind, or just be removed.
5.1 Justification: Users can plot route by holding the mouse button on it, so there's no need for a single button if there's a much better function already in use.

I think the best advise I can offer would be :-

If we could do it or see it in Horizons we should still be able to do it or see it in Odyssey.
If we could do it in X* amount of actions in Horizons, then it should take only X or less actions in Odyssey, never greater than X but always less than X if possible.
*(where X is the amount it takes in horizons)

If something in Horizons gives detailed info, then give the same detailed info and more in Odyssey. NEVER LESS.
Doing it quicker and getting more information is more important to us than if it looks pretty.

Sorry if this isn't what you wanted but its the best this old fat guy sitting at home not getting paid to help is willing to offer :)

BUG: Renaming new bookmark fails to change name.

1. Select a body in either map
2. Click "bookmark +".
3. In dialog, change name of bookmark and click save
4. Observe the bookmark has the body's original name.

ENHANCEMENT: Clicking on the bookmark icon on a bookmarked object should bring up dialog similar to creating a new bookmark.

Previously I suggested that the "create bookmark" icon should change to "delete bookmark" if the selected object is already bookmarked. After thinking about it, I'd prefer having the icon change to just the bookmark (no '+') on a bookmarked object and would now mean "edit bookmark". Clicking on it would bring up the same dialog as with create but would include a button to delete the bookmark.
