odyssey or not?

So folks, im a long term commander who was originally on the PS4, i have migrated my account to PC and have found a new love/enthusiasm for the game again, i recently bought odyssey, but haven't booted it up yet due to probable fear of what to expect and have been roaming around in horizons. So due to all the conflicting posts etc i see on here and have picked up some tid bits from other forum posts, but i have some questions if thats ok? I know its probably going to be subjective anyway.....

1- Is the game at least stable? compared to what it was anyway?

2- When i go from horizons to odyssey is there major changes i need to go through? does your commander profile just switch over and only difference being your playing on a different version of the game galaxy? in other words , am i going to have a lot of disruption to my normal time within the game at the start? more tutorials? gameplay mechanic changes?

3-Horizons better than odyssey?

im mostly an explorer and trader i dont really do combat etc I have seen apparently exploration etc is better on odyssey.

Thanks for your thoughts folks, stay safe out there o7
I "transferred" over from Xbox about a month ago and went straight to odyssey.

1. I brought a top end PC and set my max FPS to 60 and have no problems, occasional drops of a couple of frames, the game itself has probably crashed twice. I would consider the game very stable.

2. I skipped the on foot tutorial as I wanted to adjust keybinding and mess about by myself. Gameplay wise unlocking the new engineers and suits/weapons is an even worse grind than anything in horizons because some mats you cant get as mission rewards. Getting use to stealth and not getting shot at by guards takes awhile to get use to.

3. Odyssey is way better than horizons IMO, just lucky I didn't have to go through 14 patches and a year of pain.

I refer my fellow CMDR to an earlier response:

"Suits up to grade 3 (and some with useful mods) can be bought from Pioneer Supplies.

Grind avoided".

And weapons.

But then again if you want to be heavily involved in ground PvP, in which case there will be grind.

G3 is fairly simple, especially if you get a high tier mod.
Higher grades and engineer unlocks are a pain but then they are in Horizons too. I think we just look at them with rose tinted glasses now. (Settlement Defense Plans excepted)

Personal choice. Personally I play 3.8 Horizons 95% of the time. I’ve played Odyssey extensively, even traveling across the Galaxy on a months long exploration trip.

To me Odyssey is a downgrade and a disappointment. The visuals are worse, the lighting is much worse, the planetary tech is a downgrade, the on foot content is repetitive and pointless etc. However, this is just my opinion and it’s in the minority so I would say give it a shot. If, like me, you don’t like it you can always switch back to 3.8.

Dont bother with Odessey you will just get frustrated with the "on foot missions" making a murder out of you thus stacking notoriety and massive credits

Hemorrhaging from being arrested and trying to leave the detetion centers

how is that even possible without getting notoriety???
I normally have notoriety 10 anyway, it doesn't affect my play. (I go out for a quick bit of sightseeing if I need to clear it - currently out in the black with some friends, so clean until I return)

1. Yes
2. No. There is a little pain with the new Galaxy Map, System Map and the outfitting but once your past that, it's fine.
3. Yes - especially for exploration. Despite what some people have said about the new planetary tech, it it is really worth exploring the new atmospheric planets, some of the vistas I've found have been amazing.

P.S. Odyssey is on Steam sale for £16.49

Notoriety seems to be a potential problem related to local bounties. If one moves on to some other system it will just bleed off and not cause any problems. Unless (of course) one keeps racking it up... :) It's really not too bad, just move on to a system you're welcome in instead of shoot on sight, and otherwise take on those system authority ships too... :D

Having been in the much the same situation as the OP and recently moving across from Xbox, I am really enjoying Odyssey. To my eyes the planets look much better and seem more varied than in Horizons, both at distance and on the ground, and it all feels very "real". The option to be on foot really adds something, and the new settlements are nicely done. On foot gameplay can look a bit tedious from the outside - but then so do Horizon's missions. I've avoided on-foot combat missions so far, and found plenty to do.

I bought Odyssey 2 weeks ago. Short answer: no.

Odyssey Positive Points:

  • The initial amazement of being able to get off your ship and see your ship from the ground. They are beautiful.
  • Interstellar Apex (a kind of galactic airline that allows you to travel to planets and bases using their own shuttles). It saves you time and effort, they are useful.
  • the lobby The astonishment lasts about 10 minutes. It's fun to get off your ship and walk around one of the station areas you just visited.
  • The new interface. It really improves quality of life and makes it easy to use recurring tasks.

Negative points of Oddyssey:

Really everything else. There are so many things and so much risk on my part of falling into subjective opinions that I will try to be as specific as possible.
  • Get off your ship without an “Armstrong moment”. It's a wasted opportunity that detracts from the experience of going down to a new planet. You land  you are in your ship  faded to black  you see yourself the next second stepping on the planet.
  • When you get off your ships you realize how huge they really are. All that size and still not walkable? Why so large and detailed on the outside? Oddyssey adds NOTHING to the experience of having your own ship.
  • the lobby Beautiful, but completely useless. Everything you do from the lobby you could continue to do without getting off your ship and the game experience would remain really the same.
  • The lobby again. All (and I mean ALL) the lobbies of all the bases are identical, except for aesthetic details trickily placed to give the deceptive feeling of being in a different place. Zero immersion. All the NPC's of all the lobby's you will always find them in the same locations. There is no interaction with the rest of the NPC's. You have a bar, there is music, there are tables, but you will never feel that you are really in a bar (the bartender sells/traffics objects, always the same objects).
  • A thousand trillion planets, most of them all copies of each other, barren and empty. Zero or no motivation for exploration or surprise.
  • Five (5!) years of development for Oddyssey, but we don't have ANY new ships. In a spaceship game they haven't deigned to release a single new ship in years.

I could go on, but I think you get the “big picture”. Personally, the feeling that Oddyssey leaves me with is that the developers do not respect their player base, they despise their own product and what they do (a lot or a little) they do with reluctance and apathy.

I do not recommend it, I intend with this to avoid a great disappointment.

I'm a bit biased, because i own Odyssey and i'm interested, that many people will buy it too. Because then is a small chance, that ED will evolve further, otherwise 'we all will fall in Doom".

Yes, it's a big immersion's interrupter, imho.

Get off your ship without an “Armstrong moment”.

Again?
That's just a misinterpreted and out of context metaphor that people took it literally and they built upon it a full set of imaginary expectations which obviously failed to materialize

It was never meant to be a full process as in get off the chair, suit up, slide down the stair and touch the ground.
It only referred to the feeling of finding yourself on the ground and touching it with your feet for the first time (as opposed to touching it with the wheels of your srv)

To quote Piers Jackson: "... the idea that you kind of get that Neil Armstrong moment" (emphasis is mine - kind of)

Yes again.

The metaphor used in this forum called the “Armstrong moment” may be more or less accurate, but it has a valid point: Oddyssey does not add anything new to the experience of piloting a ship, not even when it comes to landing.

It was never meant to be a full process as in get off the chair, suit up, slide down the stair and touch the ground.
Exactly, that's the problem: he never intended to contribute any of that. In fact, Oddyssey does not provide any of that or anything else. Oddyssey is an empty shell.
