Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

FDev have got it very very wrong in my opinion. Start with the ships. That’s why we play, to fly space ships. Start there, let us walk in our ships. Let me see where I sleep, where I live, all that stuff. I want to see the cargo hold. Let me look out of all the windows that aren’t part of the cockpit.

You know, if they had done that, there would have been threads telling FD they had dropped the ball on it, because it would be just walking around ships and what they wanted was the ability to get out of their ships and walk around on planets?

Some players would only be happy if the devs did everything at once, and some would still complain because its not what they wanted.

This is what you have to listen to every day as a dev. People telling you that you are wrong because you didn't do things like some people want, but if you did things how those people wanted other people would be telling you that you are bad.

  • Having name plates on npc's before you kill them was a little creepy.

FD should double down on this. Should also list marital status, whether they have kids, and whether they are nice to cats.

When you kill a NPC they should give a death speech like "Someone, please take care of little Timmy, there will be nobody left to feed the family!"

Make you feel like a real cad for taking out the guards just because you want a bit more money.

All kidding aside, the way death and murder is handled in the game isn't satisfactory, in my opinion. Even using your joke and turning it into gameplay would be an upgrade to the experience; yeah, that random guy you killed had a son, and he's coming after you now.

again same arguments "oh you dont like the new product.. maybe dont play it" what kind of attitude is that instead of encouraging players to play and encouraging the devs not to waste time on useless gimmicks?

If there is more to do then why havent they shown it? all they have focused on is the combat so that is all we have to base our reactions on and my reaction is.. its meh, I waited years for this? I put up with them dropping CG's due to poor management? I put up with waiting for carriers for this?
You aren't required to "put up" with anything. I've walked away from many games, as I'm sure many others on here have as well. Sometimes things evolve in a different direction from their origination. The changes will appeal to some and not to others. Walking away and suggesting to not purchase an expansion that doesn't excite you seems like a reasonable solution. What would you expect at this point? Fdev to scrap the whole project or implement some massive redesign when the alpha is to be released in a few weeks? The direction appears to be set, they've shown us what they've got so far, and now it's up to the consumer to either buy or don't buy.

Damn those Madalorians!

Then you take it upon yourself to find little Timmy and tell him that his father had a terrible accident at work, but everything will be fine. You're going to look after him. You have money and your own ship and will take him on grand adventures. You raise Timmy as your own. You nurture his development, give him love, compassion, and you build a childhood full of fond memories. Timmy's all grown up now. He's taken to the "family business". While working a job one day, he's got to steal a power core. Oh no, a worker is there, he has no choice. Timmy sees the worker had a son who is now an orphan, Timmy knows what he must do. This is the way.

:ROFLMAO: The final two lines.

You’ve not even played it yet and already decided it’s DOA?
No need to play it. Seriously. Show me a game that has ever looked this bad in motion but has actually turned out to be really fun to play. And I don't mean graphics I mean the play mechanics and AI on display, here. There are lots of games which look like they're going to be awesome but then when you play them it turns out that everything feels off and the elements don't come together properly. But the opposite is never true - if it looks like a shallow jankfest it most certainly is.

It'd be cool if vidya could be similar to movies in that being bad enough sometimes somehow pushes through into an entirely different category of good.

One of the things I like most about ED, lots of different types of game play. Trading, exploring, mining, passengers, combat, smuggling on and on.
While most fps are simply boring after a few games. This does look interesting.
I play mostly solo some pg. That trailer would make it very interesting going solo. Tactics and strategy, Two of my favorite combos in gaming.

Show me another FPS that let's me fly a spaceship through 400 billion star systems when I'm not specifically engaging in combat and I'll agree with you. Show that on console and I'll pay your rent for a month
No Man's Sky has been doing this for years now. Also who cares? If the FPS isn't good it has no reason to exist regardless of how many spaceships you can also fly when you're not playing the FPS part. One does not justify the other. At all.

It looks like a game from the the 90'. Watching those NPC doing nothing and taking cover with just nothing and staying stand still was painful.
I hope I'm mistaken but the gameplay didn't look good.

From the trailer we saw:
-2 players entering a base running around 200m without any resistance, the player movement was aweful, the sync was terrible.
-NPC doing nothing
-openeing a door by force, it was cool but I hope it doesn't get repetitive
-NPC inside doing nothing
-waiting for a countdown
-shooting npc standing still without cover
-running 200m back to take a ship

The players had a lot of talk on the radio for such trivial task.

It was really unimpressive.

So the pre-alpha Odyssey gameplay trailer is out.
You see three devs raiding a base then flying away.

My thoughts:-

Animation is poor. Players walking are just pure cringe! It’s uncomfortable to watch.
FPS element looks worse than, well, every single other FPS game out there.
Bases will be procedurally generated - does this mean the same old same old scenario again and again?
Lots of unrealistic elements to the trailer, particularly the NPC behaviour. And I’m pretty sure this will get dull quite quickly.
Oh, and no VR.
Gotta say, I was kind of neutral about Odyssey. After seeing this, I could not care less for it at all!

What about manual ship repair? Let me float outside my ship and fix that dodgy laser that keeps breaking down.
All that stuff!
That’ll do for Odyssey 1. Then build from there.
Sorry FDev, you’ve dropped a ball here...
From the trailer I watched I wasn't impressed at all, looked very rough. Running animations were stiff, even cartoony feeling. NPCs also looked brainless and did not use cover. Hopefully its just down to it still being in alpha. But man, I really do wish they would have expanded the ships before moving onto fps. The FPS feels rushed and tact on here.
