ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey: Update on VR and Ship Interiors

This is an old post and now odyssey is out and we've seen the horrible flat screen, we need an update that at least says they're looking at making it stereoscopic sometime in the future.
Also I've read here some saying how the cockpits are ok...No they're not. The holograms of your ship on the right with shields and the station in green on the left are like a 3d projection on a FLAT surface. But in Horizons they are lovely all round full 3D. Also the lighting is strangely bright without the usual glow and shines.
Also I have the robot skull in my Python ( see attached) in Horizons it has a glowing red eye - glowing blue ice hanging off it and lots of true reflections. Now look at it in Odyssey. It's just a badly painted metal lump. ( I'm sure they'll fix it in the future but don't say they're better! )

I'll say this: When I was considering purchasing Elite Dangerous, my main concern was that I wanted to be free to move about inside my ship. My choices were Star Citizen or Elite.

Star Citizen already HAD ship interiors, but Elite was ELITE. I grew up with it. So, I chose to go with Elite because I was led to believe that ship interiors were going to be added "soon." It's been YEARS now, and we STILL have no ship interiors.

I understand the desire to provide content for the maximum number of players, and I'm ok with that. However, I grow weary of waiting. I mean, I would even be satisfied (for now) with being able to move about the cockpit of my ship. Can we get THAT, at least?

Greetings Commanders!

We hope you enjoyed our first dev diary release and stream. It was our pleasure to bring you the latest news on Odyssey and needless to say we can't wait to share more info around further locations, missions, combat and more in further episodes over the coming months.

We are aware that there are a lot of questions across the community and while we will be bringing a more detailed FAQ for these very soon we felt it was right to update you on a couple of the most discussed topics in the Elite Community at this time, specifically around VR in Odyssey, and ship interiors.

VR and Elite Dangerous Odyssey

We understand that our VR players are keen to know more about how the transition and gameplay will work in Odyssey in VR. With that in mind, we would like to share our current plan for how that will work.
In Odyssey, players will be able to fly down to planets, fly through atmospheres and drive along planet surfaces in their SRVs - all while remaining in VR.

When disembarking your ship or SRV, players will be presented with a projected flat game screen in their VR headset in order to continue on foot. Players will of course be able to remove headsets if they so choose, but this will not be a requirement to continue your adventure.

There will be no requirement to boot between Horizons and Odyssey in order to continue your journey.
We understand that VR is a big part of Elite Dangerous and is a feature that holds a dedicated and passionate community. However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits. That said, we do hope that this implementation will allow our VR players the best possible transition between their VR experience and exploration on foot.

Ship Interiors

Another topic we know players keen for more information on is around ship interiors, and we wanted to clarify our current position on this.

While Odyssey will see players explore a wide range of on and off world locations including station interiors, ship interiors will not be included at launch.

We understand that the bond between Commander and starship is incredibly strong and know this will disappointing news for some. However, we believe it is right to invest our development time in locations and features which offer the most meaningful experience and gameplay for all players. Rest assured that Odyssey will offer a great variety of long requested locations to explore, both on land and in space, which we'll be sharing more details around very soon.

As always, we value and appreciate your passion and feedback and cannot wait to share more with you.

Why was VR not mentioned at all in the "road map" yesterday? Is EDO still a VR game, or are y'all too focused on making a half baked FPS for PS4? There are several confirmed issues with VR in EDO, and yet no news what so ever. Is this the "new improved communication"?

Parity on all platforms is a fair plan,I guess we're adding features from that point.
It's not adding features. I was perfectly able to play Horizons in VR, and Fdev explicitly stated that I would be able to in EDO. Apart from the fps, which is much more of a concern for VR players, I can't move my vanity cam, everything is black, the scanner is broken, etc. And now the message is that the PC beta will be finished around Christmas, witout a single word about VR?!? I'll accept my loses, knowing that I've learned not to buy anything from Fdev again, but I'll be pretty stubborn telling Fdev to live up to their promises.

MISSED ADDITIONAL GAMEPLAY

A lack of ship interiors could simply be explained by Frontier Devs unwillingness to change the mesh of current ships. After all, should they modify the mesh they might break it and the old saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" is perhaps true.

Unfortunately, the lack of ship interiors effectively prevents a whole new level of maintenance gameplay.

It would be great if internal modules broke down at random and then had to be repaired by:

a) walking around the ship to the affected area, and
b) using a set of engineered 'material upgraded hand tools' to conduct the repair.

The present system of simply pushing the AFMU button is too lazy.

Except supposedly the ships were being designed with interiors in mind from way back in the Kickstarter if you listen to some of David Braben's interviews. He really enjoyed talking about that.

@Ryuto. I can at least confirm that the Type-10 definitely has no organised interior. I once had a glitch that made me fall through the cockpit floor and I found I could look around the mesh of the ship. It was a total unorganised mess. To craft any interior room spaces would have required a complete redesign of the ship.

Well, that is one of the newest ships and when David was going on about interiors, I believe it was the Anaconda they were pushing. So, it's possible that's the only ship with something built out so far.

Honestly, they already have most of the assets they need to make ship interiors a reality. The hallways in buildings. The crew quarters. The labs. The cargo rooms. The reactor room. It's all there. They could add a few more rooms/areas, copy-paste these assets into a sensible layout per ship and there you go, there is your ship interiors.

There is enough already to even add gameplay to these interiors. Make it happen Fdev, you are more then halfway there to interiors.

The FDEV guy doing one of the dev diaries before odyssey alpha launched said it’s a gameplay decision, how players will get bored having to walk through their ships every time to board and to disembark! Knowing FDEVs methods that beaming portal and dumbass footsteps during a blacked out loading screen is how it’s gonna stay.
