Odyssey VR specific bug reports - please contribute!

Okay, the issue report is in if any of you lovely people fancy adding a Confirmation:

Here is the video showing the problem in motion:

bless you CMDR. I don't play that often and this is killing me, I also saved a video and a few Screenshots that illustrate the issue but I HATE filling out tickets. I was going to. but now I can just vote on yours and add my note.

I've just started to use OpenComposite + OpenXR Toolkit instead of Steam VR with my HP Reverb & 4090 and the "HUD double image" fault is not there anymore.

Were you using SteamVR before?

I'm using OpenComposite as well and don't have (never had) the issue. But several here are using SteamVR and don't have it either so it might not be a VR API thing. What's super weird is that only part of the screen is being affected. You'd think if it were an API/OpenVR issue, we would see it in other parts of the entire screen.

Yes, I was and have always used SteamVR, and after update 17 started to have the HUD problem like some others.

I just decided to try OpenComposite + OpenXR Toolkit to see how it performed and noticed the HUD issue disappeared.

I will be staying with OC + OXR as for me I’m seeing a better quality image and more stable performance than SteamVR.

Additional Info:

By using the ingame AMD FSR 1.0 upscaling I can induce the HUD fault within OC + OXR. If I switch to Normal upscaling I don't get the fault.
So it doesn't appear to be an issue with Steam VR.

Same here. OpenComposite got me >10 FPS more over SteamVR. Better performance in ED = less aliasing, better clarity.

Good pointer about FSR. It might be that as enabling FSR forces a rendering at lower resolution, that brings in the issue. Hopefully no one here is using FSR.

I don't use FSR or any ingame scaling, only scaling I use is Oculus headset settings and Oculus Tray Tool sampling (1.4x and 1.15 for OTT) @ 90Hz. OpenComposite only, no OpenXRTools. Only flickering image for me is left eye ship in landing radar.

Maybe it's a general scaling issue? I'll try different scaling settings, perhaps some HUD elements are not scaling properly in the left eye ...

tl:dr - FSR on "fixes" the double image.

If I reset any and all scaling inside or outside of the game, I get a doubled ship image in the landing radar on the left eye.
If I set scaling in the graphics options to Normal, the image is still doubled on the left.
If I turn on AMD CAS Sharpening, the image is still doubled on the left.
If I turn on FSR, the image is NOT doubled.
If I set my exterior scaling options to my usual and enable FSR, the image is NOT doubled.

I have no idea what that means or if it helps but that's what I get.

If I turn on FSR the image gets doubled, so the exact opposite of your situation 😅

(I don’t use any external upscaling options so cannot check those)

Thanks for testing 👍

If you have the possibility, could you try upscaling both external with your HMD software/SteamVR, and by setting ED's HMD=1.5+? Even if FPS tanks, just to test if the issue goes away with higher rendering resolutions.

Then again, why would only certain part of the HUD have this issue and be fixed with more resolution? Tough issue.

Just to list here incase anything jumps out as common to others (regarding the image doubling HUD).

I use -

EDHM_UI
OpenComposite
Oculus via Link cable set to 90Hz 4864x2448
Oculus Tray Tool Supersampling set to 1.15, ASW off
Geforce 3060Ti
AMD 5600

I don't use -

Ingame HMD quality
FSR
SteamVR
OpenXR Toolkit

FSR On stops my landing radar ship from doubling.

Thanks for the info - can I ask you and your friend what graphics card you have?

(…and if they fancy contributing to the issue report 😁👍)

So far we’ve got:

  • Quest 3 + RTX 4070ti (bug) (me)
  • Vive Pro2 + RTX 4090 (bug) (report confirmation)
  • Pico 4 + ??? (bug) (your friend)
  • Reverb G2 + RTX 4090 (bug) (DeckerSolo)
  • Reverb G1 + RTX 4090 (bug) (sgurr)
  • Pico 4 + ??? (okay) (you)
  • Reverb G2 + RTX 4070 (okay) (report non-confirmation)
  • Reverb G2 + RTX 3080ti (okay) (Helmut G)
  • Quest 3 + RTX 3080 (okay) (JR250)
  • Index + GTX 1080ti (okay) (jojon)
Sorry for the late reply. In my system (working well to date) there is a 3070ti. My squadron mate has a 3080. Driver 536.99 for me (bit old), waiting to have my friend's driver version

Thanks for the reply - you’ve probably seen it upthread but it looks like AMD FSR is the main suspect 👍

New Nvidia driver, can't say I've noticed the issue they are referring to.

I had a closer look at my landing radar today - with AMD FSR switched off my left HUD element is fine but the landing radar is a double image in the left eye - with AMD FSR switched on my left HUD element is doubled in the left eye but the landing radar is fine.

I've checked again using OC + OXR not Steam VR
In Normal upscaling I do not get any double image issue.
In AMD FSR I get what you describe "landing radar is a double image in the left eye" when close to docking (I guess this is when the landing radar activates), but as soon as I am docked the double image disappears.

This is now giving me a headache reading about this in this thread (along side the headache the game gives me looking at the double image/s) and trying to understand who has what problem when🤪.
So far we have some folks with double image on left.
Some folks with double image on landing radar.
FSR on fixes one or the other for some.
FSR off fixes one or the other for others.
FSR toggled switches which image is doubled for at least one.

I'm thinking at this point that FSR just coincidentally reacts with it. Does anyone have double images on both the left and the landing radar at the same time or is it just one or the other for everyone? Again, no idea what the answer to that question would indicate either way but ...
