Already commented on this in a developer forum. As someone else put it: "This makes a compelling case for the Lighthouse system".
We're using Vive and lighthouses for professional applications and industry demonstrations and it's leaps and bounds more reliable and easy to set up than Oculus' system. This article is a prime example why doing all the CV processing on your PC is not ideal.
Anyone have a Tobii EyeX tracker? They initially relied on a USB3.0 connection that put all the camera data through with the processing done in software. They moved to a new system where the actual processing happens on the Hardware itself, and then the results are transmitted via USB2.0 and the result is a much better tracking system that has better performance AND needs much less interface bandwith - and works on every single chipset out there, contrary to the first revision.
Oculus needs to change this. There's no debate about this. They're currently using an inferior tracking solution. I hope they can figure out a way to switch to a passive system like Vive has.
