On-the-fly summary of Chapter 4 BGS / Scenarios Livestream

  • Part 2 of 4 livestreams
  • Reaction from last week’s exploration stream was a ‘big release’, reaction has been ‘incredible’
  • Localised voice packs! French, Russian, Spanish. Coming in Chapter 4
  • About the BGS….
  • This stream will be more talk then show
  • Scenarios, a bit more direction feedback for BGS.
  • Beta will have staggered rollout of scenarios
  • Scenarios feature some video direction.
  • New UI prompts to allow player to make choices.
  • New objectives in info panel (for combat zones and megaship raiding)
  • Combat zones (and USSs and Scenarios) now feature background voice chatter
  • Scenarios are linked to BGS. They have very specific effects on BGS and are spawned by BGS.
  • More faction info and states displayed for scenarios
  • Serious BGS talk now.
  • BGS = Simulation of humanity in ED and how players actions effect the galaxy around them.
  • Pirate vs Megaship scenarios is coming at the end of the stream
  • Multiple States! Improved feedback. Changes to War, Expansion. News changes. New state added. Interesting stuff to do with megaships.
  • Until now, factions had one global state in all systems. In Chapter 4, each faction can be in multiple states within each system.
  • Example shown – for one sytem, a faction was in famine, outbreak AND Lockdown!, “things not going well for them!”
  • Economic states. Security States. Movement States. Plus other states.
  • FD holding back some BGS surprises.
  • Multiple states for factions is huge change and will effect what you see in systems. About a core change as you can get for Beyond.
  • For large player factions, a lot of things will be going on those systems.
  • Scenarios can be used to attack the states you don’t want.
  • Time for Distress call USS scenario video shown!
  • From tool, located distress call USS/scenario. We fly there, drop in. NPC asks (via voice feedback) for food due to this system being in famine state. Options for Help or Ignore shown to player. When player says no, NPC says ‘charity is dead!’
  • Refuel distress call USS/scenario video. This is due to investment state and NPCs being careless. NPC asks for spare fuel. Options for Help or Ignore. FD helps, fuel limpet fires, NPC actually says thanks, ‘hope I can repay the favour!”
  • Scenarios have timers.
  • Economic and security BGS status bars shown in status panel for each faction. You can now see the exact status of a faction and how far away it is from another status (not in real time).
  • Civil Liberty added to BGS Security states. Frontier wanted a positive security state compared to Lockdown.
  • Faction happiness is on there. More on that later.
  • Squadrons can be linked to factions and will have option to see faction states for ALL systems that squadron’s faction occupies.
  • Changes for War.
  • Conflict states start in the same way. Wars are played over 7 day period. Conflict zones have been changed, now work around a battle phase during which you can win points. Most points wins the battle and eventually, the war.
  • New conflict status bar shown when in war, so you can see how your faction is doing.
  • You can now see what you’re fighting over in the status panel (what station).
  • Conflict Zone! New UI on comms panel shows who is fighting who. You pick a side from here and you can see more info about the factions before making a choice.
  • Conflict Zones can now have objectives or side objectives, like the press turning up to report on the war, you have to protect them! The leaders of the faction may turn up and you have to protect them. Also, capital ships may turn up.
  • Demo of conflict zone! Loads of background chatter atmosphere.
  • When you kill a ship, you see how many kills your faction has claimed compared to the enemy. When the bar fills the battle is over, but will restart again.
  • After a kill, friendly NPC says “Good kill!”
  • Can’t hear the devs for a while due to all the weapons firing.
  • Haha, the devs are saying “we told you loads of secrets!”
  • Expansion has changed due to multiple states being introduced. Expansion is now a faction-wide idea, affected by influence in systems and the happiness of the people.
  • Happiness is based on system state.
  • BGS will pick the system the faction will expand to. However, a faction will expend from their happiest system. That’s the plan anyway.
  • Changes will keep big player factions busy. What systems are worth losing for the better good?
  • Local news is changing. Now, there will be a daily article for each faction.
  • Megaships and Installations – a LOT more of them have been added. More installation types have been added (like relay stations) and they are considered assets for conflict to fight over. Megaships can be involved in scenarios as they move around the galaxy.
  • Outbreak is special state. Changes to this state coming (?).
  • Pirates vs Megaships scenario!
  • At a megaship.
  • “Hostile pirates! We need help!”
  • FD decides to help the pirates! Laws will be broken!
  • Data scanners can now scan objective targets on mega ships (like power capacitors, destroy 10.)
  • Objectives updates are shown to player, “6/10 power capacitors destroyed”
  • When power capacitors destroyed, megaship lights go out and its engines go offline.
  • Changes to reputation and effect on factions shown after the battle.
  • Installations will be featured in scenarios. Megaships too later.
  • Other Commanders can enter scenarios and can pick the other side fighting against you.
  • BGS is a big beast. FD hoping for plenty of feedback during beta.
  • USS still spawn as usual. They are persistent. You don’t need a Scanner to find them.

Exactly the kind of post I was hoping for being stuck at work. Thank you will rep when I get home.

This is exactly the kind of fleshing out I wanted to see going on, can't wait to hear about the rest of beyond.

OMG, let's pray that it's done with more effort and variety than ALL the other NPC chatter we currently have (SLF pilots, station and planetary traffic controllers, Pirate comms, etc). The last thing anyone wants to do is spend two hours in a CZ while being bombarded by the same 8-or-12 exclamations in 3-to-4 different voices, over and over and over and over...

Oh, to have FDev community source stuff like that -- the endless variety would be amazing (and fun to generate).

Not really wowed with this update too. BGC is something that you would never really use. Why would I want to know the happiness of a faction in a system? Some scenarios might be good. But what is the point of travelling to a USS just to give some food (something I never have in cargo) to someone just to be awarded a few CR? This game is about killing and improving your ship. FDev should focus more on taking out these irritating moments of travel to a station for example where you just have to wait and count down the last several Ls before you can jump off hyper space. This is what makes the game boring.

I think Sisko is using up all the forums bullet points! ;-)

As a non BGSer this looked very interesting, seeing graphics 8n game show you how things are, plus that factions can be in multiple states, which makes it more variable and less binary would seem to be a great way to get players engaged and mix things up a bit!

Scenarios look brilliant, choosing sides, having objectives, being able to drop out when you want to. If this is 10 months development what th3 heck will the stuff for 2020 be like!

Can someone please post a doomed message as I am getting a bit too giddy and excited!

Hmm, that last point has me a bit concerned. I thought they said that honking was going to allow us to reveal USS's.....now they say they spawn as usual, only persistent. Hmm, hopefully they mean both ways are viable-scanning the system for USS's or just stumbling on them as you go.

They are revealed, you discover them via new interfaces as you discover planets. However, new ones also are spawned so systems doesn't run out of signal sources while you fly around.
