Modes Open and private MOD

Why would anybody choose to play open when there is no reward for it?
In all MP games PVP brings more rewards, so players know why are they risking more.
I simply can't think of why would anyone play Open if they get the same reward in Private.
MechWarrior, All Wargaming games, LOL... in every game you have PVP and PVE. In PVP you get twice the reward, and missions exclusive to that mod.
If PVP missions would give twice the reward, and be high level exclusive, you would get a lot more players and the game would be much better.

Another one for the drinking game, me thinks.

Space is such a vast and lonely place and if you can get into the right instance, at the right time and all is running well for both of you and you can survive the encounter. Meeting and greeting other people makes it, all worth while.

So... Really this is just a veiled post about incentivizing open play.

I approve. Also, open play is more fun.

I missed your last attempt. It was way too short and only took the powers that be, seconds to read and then condemn. Write a novelette and you can get a few good replies in before the close.

Because you want to play with others?
Open isn't just about PvP.

On the flipside, why should open be rewarded? there really isn't any more 'risk' involved in playing in open other then what is inherit in playing with other players which may help or hinder?

You're comparing arena games to a role playing game.

Try comparing them to CQC / Arena, and there you go, rewarded PvP.

Alright, I'm going to take a stab at answering OP's question.

It goes all the way back to the original Elite. As I understand it the design philosophy employed by FDev is one of inclusion, not exclusion, with the rule of thumb being opt-in instead of opt-out. This means most things in the game are optional. You can take part in any aspect of the game you like, with very little being forced on you. In its current configuration, Open is an opt-in mode of the game. You choose--on your own--to play in instances with other players for its own sake. If players were rewarded for playing in Open that would create an opt-out scenario where players would feel as if they were losing something by not playing in Open.

That goes against FDev's core design ethos. They want as many aspects of the game as possible to be equally rewarding without players feeling compelled to take part in something. This, I think, is why Engineering has been redesigned and the materials traders introduced. They don't want players feeling as if they are missing something by not taking part in Engineering, so they made Engineering more accessible (at least in my opinion).

I understand that might not make a lot of sense in a gaming context. After all, gaming is highly competitive and coming from that environment to Elite where there is virtually no competition at all must feel altogether alien. It need not feel that way, though. I genuinely appreciate FDev's opt-in approach and find it fills a neglected niche in the gaming market: Cooperation and freedom. In this game you are in the purest sense free to experience this fictional universe in any way you like without that sinking feeling that you're not getting the most out of it. It's refreshing.

More fun is when you get more credits, and a sense of accomplishment for playing something that is more difficult ;-)
90% of players need an incentive to play open. ALL mp games devs know this. I am astounded that we have to debate this?
NPC are far less dangerous than elite human players?

Average NPCs are far easier than good players I agree; but being pulled by any ship, NPC or other wise, is still a risk.

Looking at your option, a bonus for playing in open? So what is this bonus you seek? 10%; 20% 50% extra somehow? Is that enough to make it worth the 'extra risk' of getting a re-buy in your Cutter?

I know what the Open "bonus" should be.

Every time a human player tries to interdict another human player - £40 is removed from their bank and sent to the victim of their attack before the interdiction works.
If there is no funds, the interdiction fails, their guns won't deploy and they get put in to ghost mode so they cannot ram.

Just imagine the sense of pride and accomplishment they'd have killing at a CG.
As they give that sweet, sweet bonus to help "encourage" people to stay in Open mode.

PvP'ers, building a better community.

That was pretty lame, dude.
