Open letter thingy / Dear mods, about removing of polls

Hi everyone. It should be noted that this is not the first time polls have been suspended on the forum. They were allowed back and you have all seen the results!

Here is Brett's last word on the subject.
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/332168-Forum-polls

That conflicts with what Korrash said.

I think the OP is missing the point here.
Polls were never removed because of lack of control, they were removed because the results are always largely irrelevant.

I guess he was missing the point.

vBulletin doesn't have support for this sort of thing.

Okay, but then you said this:

Of course, admins and moderators can attach polls to threads. But all moderators have been instructed to not add any of such to any thread unless on official basis (Frontier Requested). Frontier staff can also generate polls as well, but asking them to add a poll to your thread is a no go - because they are not a moderator. :)

Then, basically, you *can* moderate polls - by making it a requirement to ask a moderator (ask volunteers from the moderator pool to provide this service, perhaps?) to add a poll to a thread you're making.

Assuming all your moderators are up to speed and trustworthy and all, you can filter out the nonsense that warranted poll removal (twice).

Yes, it's a little more work on the moderators if you go with that...but as they say, "No rest for the wicked!" :p

Am referring to automation vs manual.

Manual is the latter part of my post, automation is the first part. vBulletin has no way to pre-moderate new poll creations by people, much akin to new user posts getting moderated automatically, requiring approval or removal (hooray spam!).

...Polls won't be making a return at any time in the near future. Seeing a little more than a quarter of the frontpage of Dangerous Discussion being a poll, mostly useless or baseless polls at that, is what led to it being disabled...

Thanks Brett. Not that my opinion matters all that much but GOOD decision! I come to the forum to find information, provide info to players who need help and to socialize with others who love the game. I'll at times debate an issue with those who are very negative but in the end one cannot change a personality or committed viewpoint. At least polling abuse is one less thing to deal with.

Regards

And another chance for those predisposed to cry 'censorship' when their poll is blocked and others are allowed.

Well...that's exactly what it would be?

In fact, *all* polls are essentially being completely censored right now, what I describe would mean at least some polls would be censor-free. :p

Instead of a poll how about a cage, you then have to fight for your opinion to win, last man standing, nothing below the belt, blunt objects ok, no heavy/flame weaponry any tickle feathers -instant ban

But tickle feathers are my main!

Poll Options:

O Yes, I agree with the thread creator
O No, I am dumb and ugly

People also would just vote right away instead of reading a thread and then voting. So you got the first-impression feedback that people then committed themselves to, without much reading on opposing viewpoints.

Last time I saw a poll was the thread I made to have an Ed Lewis preset in Holo-Me.

Should we have an Ed Lewis preset in Holo-Me
?

O Yes
O Yes

The last fair, unbiased poll on the forums.

The polls were so badly used, a poll asking if people wanted fd to release detail on season 3, Y/N?

Its like my boss asking "do you want to be paid more?"

It's more like you asking other employees if they want to be paid more, then sending that on to your boss as though you expect that to bring on change.

My name is Rob and I am a serial voter.
I haven't been able to get my fix for quite a while now.
Last year was a good year for serial voting.
This year not so, the authorities are clamping down by removing, denying or just taking no notice.
I have applied for several fake passports to continue my voting habit, but this alas is not working either.
Can 2.4 be a voting patch please?

Not all polls were naive attempts at getting changes into the game, and/or constructed with intentional bias. Many polls were simply about canvassing community opinion on stuff.

These are the ones which have suffered, and even if they were in the minority it doesn't mean they were all irrelevant.

Meanwhile the useless polls like 'X must change! Or, not change! Sign the petition', continue unabated - they just use 3rd party tools now. So nothing has actually improved unless the volume of pointless poll spam starts to slow down. And even if it does, it's come at the cost of transparent board-hosted polls, for the times when they were relevant.
