Open letter to the forum: By your avatar I shall know you!

I use two avatars...

This one...and another one for when I'm brooding

I'm not changing that for anything :)

First off, here's your open letter: C

Second, I'm noticing an unsettling trend. People are using their in game avatars in the forum. What before was an eclectic mix of colourfull, strange and diverse set of people quickly is turning into a sea of mundane :|'s

When reading threads I refer to posters by their avatars. For instance, Agony Aunt is my nemesis in that regard. Now however it's in game avatar #237624. I don't know who you are, never met you, stop 1000 yard staring at me. The forum is descending into uncanny valley!

Yeah. So ....

This is important stuff this is, right?

It's not is it?

Oh very well. Never mind. Coffee anyone?

YAY! Someone else said it. Been thinking this myself recently, I thought I'd really love the avatars and I fully expected people to start using them in the forum too. Haven't got the beta but was planning on re-creating myself (as many others have done) as soon as 2.3 was released. Now however I'm not so sure. I've seen loads of these avatars recently (in screenshots, as forum avatars, on facebook) and yes, they're incredibly lifelike, probably some of the best game avatars I've ever seen. But but but ... I've come to the realisation that I don't want to know what all my Fuel Rat chums look like, or what the other Bucky Ball racers look like. I really don't. I like the mystery. I like these guys ..

.. beautiful tho you all are. Same goes for you Ziggy. Please don't ever ruin the mystery! I don't want to know.

Me? I'm gonna design my in-game avatar (just for fun) but ... that helment is NEVER coming off.

I'll see your C and raise you a pair of J's.

I like the new avatars due to all the time spent creating them. Those playing the Beta are aware that all of that work will go into the void once it goes live, but I have no problem with people using them here in the forums. Until it goes live, I'll stick with my current, unrelated avatar (good old Eldorf the Wise). You may see a better "me" once the CC goes live. :)

And I take mine with extra cream, extra sugar (damn the diabetes 2 and full speed ahead).

Never fear Ziggy, Bran is here and I promise to never change my avatar however I cannot be held responsible if someone else should interfere with it... some one who's name is similar to Tabitha Jones ;)

I will probably continue to use my Eve avatar, that I made about eight years ago with a more superior avatar editor. Shame!

Tried to recreate with the holo-meh, but couldn't get close.

I used to do that. I`d have an avatar for every basic state. It actually worked quite well. People were like "Oh so you`re in a bad mood today!" or "Why so sad?" lol. You`d be surprised how much psychology is invested in how people respond and act to you by an AVATAR. Just have an avatar of a pretty girl then change it for an ugly man and see the huge difference. Black man, white man, whatever- You`ll see the difference. A dollar sign, a communist sign, same again. People even think you must be some kind of way because of it. I`d have avatars that are the opposite of me and people think it must be me!

People can be so basic, they assume much from nothing or very little.

Kinda got bored of it though... So I went for a more neutral look, but some one will make huge assumptions from it!

I'm a chimp...chimps don't drink coffee, we have tea parties and the Neanderthals drink that foul stuff you call coffee...

I'm used to seeing little gfx and gifs from Xbox live...the novelty will wear off in a month or two ^^

Tragedy number one: the great beiging of planets.

Tragedy number two: the great beiging of forum avatars!

Ziggy, I have never had an avatar, but in honour of this thread, I will henceforth at request set my avatar to the great Bowie from any era for a limited time.

...so that I can support uniqueness by honouring the same God as you.

Meh, the uniformity would be far better than the uniformity of ED avatars.

I will only implement my in-game avatar into the forums the day I can create an avatar that matches my namesake.

Your only choice is to unfriend them and block them in-game :) :p

Personally I'm too handsome to be in a video game, my magnificence might break the code :D

So I'll be trying to make the guy in my sig - Red trenchcoats FD. Make. It. So [up]
