Open public beta for the NPC speech synthesis add-on 'TTS4ED'

I have a problem when o run your autoIt packed exe. The program keeps minimizing the ED executable and that makes it impossible to play. its has something to do with the fact that i play ED in full screen and at a lower resolution then the optimal screen res. if you are kind enough to let me see the source code I will be glad to translate it to C# .net and give you the C# code back so you can use it if you like... (if you don't want to release the source to the public). I can always make it from scratch but there is no point in hitting the same problems to do it right as, i'm sure, you did. PM me

wow...
As a user of hcs voicepacks, and also a user of VR, this is one of those tools that adds to the immersion....
Yes id prefer voicepacks than the 3rd party tool...but hey, its a beta...its early days....

Don't lose hope. I think Gangrel (HCS) is working on a TTS program as well. Still early days with that one too, but there are some interesting things happening all over. :D

I liked that french girl voicing the police. I'd submit to her scan any day. Personally I would prefer if Frontier got people to actually voice the NPCs though. Maybe then they would realize how strange some of their dialogue is and make it not so corny.

Priorities and all that though right.

Great work on this program, I love it! However using only for npc and with the downloaded pack I ran out of credits in 2 weeks.

I used to be an explorer like you, and then I took a rail to the scoop.
I shall be intrigued to try this. Nice work.

Hell, man, how many hours a week do you play? I've been using this with two accounts since this thread started and I still have 6000+ free credits left, although to be fair one of those accounts has been exploring until very recently and so hadn't seen a lot of NPC activity.

It almost sounds as though your setup might not be saving and re-using the generated audio, but re-requesting it each time. Certainly things like the cruise ship announcements and civil war transmissions get re-used a lot and so should be free once they've been generated and saved.

Or maybe you're just playing 18 hours a day. :)

I would be fine even if FD used TTS for NPC voices. At least it doesn't need another piece of 3rd party s/w to "workaround" something that should have been in-game.

Wow you are genius , this is something that should of been in the game from launch, take note Frontier.

I will definitely be giving this a try, when I back in the bubble. At the moment about 20K LY out in the black and not much chance running into any NPCs.

Looks great!

However, how come FDEV can't put this stuff into their own game?

It would vastly improve their game and could be simply sold as a DLC (like Horizons season pass, or ship customization and whatnot) with royalties going to the guys who developed it.

Same with VoiceAttack.

Why is VoiceAttack not integrated into the game itself with a simple in-game way to set it up?

That all said... FDEV already added traffic controllers with voice... so how hard could it be to do the same for the NPC chat? NPC's only have like 5 lines of text anyways... "Useless dreg" anyone?

I didn't make it. Credit should go to demux4555 on the subreddit.

Well I downloaded it, tried it, didn't work.... ie no sounds played :(

I checked my credit balance after a 2-hour session, and I still had my full 10K free credits....

How do I troubleshoot the problem? Apparently it's not even sending anything to the cloud to be processed... :( Yes it found my journal folder fine, I edited the settings.ini as per instructions. I changed the account ID and pwd as per the email sent, not my web login.

Anything else to check?

Because it's a large undertaking from a commercial use point of view.

This solution uses a private developer account aimed at testing integration into products.
If FD wanted to implement cloud based voice services then you'd be looking at a fee and not just a one of payment.

Because the aim of Elite was/is to pilot your ship, not speak commands. It's not in the game for the same reason it's not part of any other game

You have no idea what you're talking about. Why do you think this solution uses cloud based voice in the first place rather than someone recording all the lines spoken?

btw, TTS4ED is excellent, been using it for a couple of months now.

Tried it last night. Utterly superb. Only thing missing, and is most likely impossible to achieve with today's tech, is a little emotion.

it IS possible to do this with voice actors... the issue is, unless they hired like 20-30 different people, it would all sound ridiculous, as that NPC's 23rd cousin will be popping up sounding identical... it just wouldn't work.

I won't be paying money for this tho - considering it's for development purposes, it wouldn't be practical to pay that much money a month - hell most online games don't cost that much :p

Lol definitely not playing 18hs a day, but to be fair with the latest cg's more like 2hs a day with a lot of npc chatter (BH). Although I am skeptical too and perhaps you are on to something.

Is there a setting or anything to enable/disable saving this cache? I only downloaded the sample pack and changed the volume, have not altered any other settings.

Caching is by default and AFAIK there's no way to override it. The instruction page warns against installing in a UAC protected folder, and that's about the only other thing I can think of that might cause files not to be written. If your installation is not UAC protected then I'm stumped.

You could have a look in the downloads and processed subfolders to see if any files have been recently written to.
