Opinion: 10 LY range for colonization is ridiculously low.

At first i thought i had misheard or Piers had misspoken.

Yes, they said the numbers can change, but starting from a base of 10LY and possibly making it bigger? I'm pretty sure many of us (most of us?) had images of spreading out into the dark at a rate much faster than 10LY... even 100LY would be low in my opinion. 1000 LY, yeah, i could go with that.

Just wait until you hear the price for a claim. :ROFLMAO:

What I found interesting was the acknowledgment of their balancing strategy: "we start high and then pull back". Chances are they don't want to see the galaxy littered from edge to edge with "I was here" systems on day one, so they start with severe limits like the 24 hour claim thing and the 10ly limit. But chances are also that they will dial that back.

I think it should be 500LY. Jump range for a FC to haul material. No more than that. 10LY concentrates activity too close to the bubble. I thought part of the idea is to get outside the bubble.
I'd argue that setting it at 10LY is a good indication that they want more systems for BGS and Powerplay, but "created by the players", no matter what they claim about building a road out to anywhere else. I'd rather they just wave a magic plot wand than make it into a money sink if it's going to be limited so much.

Thats my thoughts too- PP2 and Colonization are really two aspects of the same feature.

10 LYs sounds about right imo as it encourages gameplay that has non-trivial planning and major goals to aim for at its heart, it also throws squadrons / teamwork a bone when it comes to creating another faraway 'Colonia'. They should be rare.

10-20LYs also ties in with BGS for inter-colony trade and conflict, making it more reasonable.

500 LYs is ridiculous. Groups will be building bases all the way to Beagle quicker than Kamzel could fly there back in 2015 😄

10 LY does seem surprisingly low, in that you don't have to get very far off the galactic plane and still within the limits of the current bubble and its nearby space - as Titans Leigong and Thor found! - before a 10LY range makes you go in all sorts of weird directions to get a fairly low net distance, and plenty of perfectly normal systems are completely inaccessible.

Something like 20 LY would be barely any different for long range efforts (okay, sure, it's twice as fast; still a very long time and they can always double the per-system requirements if that's really an issue) while not making even just moving around the fringes of the bubble a bit of a challenge.

Either way with that low a range a fairly short time limit on finalising claims makes sense, or it'd be too easy for bottlenecks to get filled up with abandoned claims.

10 Ly isn't really compatible with "we spent the year trying to reduce the grind". I'm sure it will be increased like when FC Tritium levels were changed soon after launch.
I think FD need to look at who wants this- explorers want things far, far away, while Powerplay groups will want high value systems close in..

My guess on the colonization beacon is 10-20 billion. Then the money for all the goods the new system and star ports will need. It will get expensive. Big time credit sink

When I heard about colonization, my first thought was "Ooh, I'm making a bubble in Xibalba." 10 LY won't even get you there, the stars are too sparse before you get close, never mind once you're out there. That's not considering that it would take 2500 times the length of time needed to claim and build a system even if there was a path. Assuming you could rush it at two days each, that's only 5000 days... over 13 years.

10 LY is too short for anything more than testing.

Frontier say we'll be able to spread out into the galaxy. Okay, so let's say it takes just one week to colonise a system if you're playing a lot (double these figures for two weeks etc.) if you want to colonise an area 40,000ly from the bubble, like around Sag A*, then that's 4,000 weeks (remember this could be doubled).

4,000 weeks from now is Wednesday 27 July 2101, so I suppose it's good to know that Frontier are committing to supporting Elite Dangerous into the next century. Also remember that this can't happen any faster with multiple players, nobody can expand outwards any faster than this even if they work together.

SERIOUSLY?!
