(Opinion) Fdev has messed up exploration

I love the new FSS, OP's reasons for why exploration is broken is exactly why I think it is finally fixed.

1. Yes metal planets/amonia planets/ice planets look similar. What do you think gives them their looks? This isn't NMS for goodness sake.

2. FSS is finally involving to use, and isn't just a honk and jump.

3. Nebulae lighting up dark sides of planets as if they were bathed in sun light was just ridiculous.

I think the inside of Nebulas would be bright. All the starlight reflecting off the gas would make the nights brighter. Just like when it’s a low overcast over a city. The city lights reflecting off the clouds can light up the landscape

Nebulas are not really like that unfortunately. When seen from far away, yes you can see them, but close up the gases and particles are.so spread out that they don't really work like that. In reality we wouldn't see the nebulas like we do anyway.

I totally disagree. Exploration is a very cool system that is the foundation for a lot of upcoming content.
They can't have ruined something they are not finished filling out yet.

I fully expect that "the bubble" will undergo changes in upcoming updates. New jump capability my push settlements outward, causing rushes in all roles, and new discoveries or types of discoveries will lead to new exploration possibilities. With all the stars out there which are still unvisited, there's probably lots still to find and they'll be adding.

I also expect an increase in planetary surface features, types of landable planets, biological and geological pois etc. They've demonstrated that their release model is incremental and builds on layers of previous content.

I remember being optimistic like this.

Wow. I guess it's really gonna suck if, in the future, we actually travel throughout the galaxy and discover it's pretty much as boring as ED makes it out to be. And, as Max Factor pointed out, nebulas as we see them pictured are significantly enhanced.

I totally agree with the OP, as soon as I saw the Beyond exploration features in beta I fed back that content was now their no.1 need as tools alone didn't address the exploration problem. Yet here we are with people mostly happy with the tools but burnt out with the lack of action.

I feel you guys. I fly exploration about half the time and I get discouraged because just mapping systems isn't stimulating enough. Finding a biological site is what I want, then I can collect all the system and body data and compare it to other finds.
But, the feeling that, at-best I'll find something already catalogued is something I grapple with.

This implies that POI life in the galaxy is only seeded by one of the two alien races and isn't occurring in any meaningful way on own.

That being said:

Life we can't land on is everywhere, support on the obvious fact that Frontier thinks there is more life than just brain trees and bark mounds. This says to me "wait," they're working on a new layer of life for us to discover. Maybe even something procedural (Grima Wormtonge hands).

I mean, they can't possibly create every individual species, so they'll need something that can self-generate. To me, this sounds like an undertaking on par with the existing planetary surface creation and would be a big feature.

Let me just put it that way - I'm very grateful I got my Elite rank in exploration shortly before the changes were introduced.

Still love the game, still love FDev, but the FSS is one more of these features where I'd love to have been a silent spectator of the dev meeting where the PIC argued why they thought this would be a fun new feature that added an entertaining new aspect to the game.

I think access to atmospheric planets would dramatically increase the potential for more varied landscapes, persistent POIs and variations of life. But to realise that accuracy or variation would require an enormous amount of work if it were all to be released in one go. The basic gameplay wouldn't be significantly different to roaming around an airless world though, just more work for the sake of variety.

I think the ideas of new mapping tags in already tagged systems and first discovered tags in the codex was very small in scope - those tags were generated within the first days of the 3.3 release & will not change, and extra sites (and emerging patterns) are not captured.

An earth-like would would be a whole huge thing to make landable and actually cool. I think a good next step would be a costic world with lakes and volcanic features, bizarre weather stuff that damages your ship etc. That would be cool as hell and a good middle step.
A Titan-like world with rivers and lakes methane and other hydrocarbons. Coool.

I find your optimism to be wrong😁

lol, OH, OH, and also:

The SRV could be fitted with a collector arm or laser for taking samples. When you fill the SRV cargo, it goes into a 1T cargo container of research samples in your ship. Then when you get back to the interstellar whats-it, you could turn those in for mad exploration credits.

OH! OH! Then they could add a new exploration reward that is data based, in addition to the paltry credit reward (hello, just like real science) that collects and gives your character RESEARCH DEGREES in various fields! The degrees could give you access to science outposts, based on your degree level. There you could get engineering for your research tools! AAAAH GAAAAHD IT WON"T STOP!

No, but they become Elite explorers doing that, and that's the developer's decision.

Bingo. That is exploration by the game's mechanics.

All the rest... the intentional flying off to some planet. Marvelling at pixels made to look like an alien sunrise.
That's all on the player. And we are all different.

Some people need a reason, and an endgame, or to receive something for doing something in the game.
I know I do. What do I get for flying out so far? Honk exploration data for credits and rank, that's all there is to me. Or maybe it's just one of those stupid unlock requirements.

Others are content to just wander and call it a game. They could play Just Cause 5 just to stand on a peak and stare at the sunset and call it their game, without even killing a single enemy. I can't understand that, but whatever floats their boat.

The other issue (for me) with Exploration, is that having gained Elite as a result of two trips to BP and several shorter hops elsewhere, there's precious little point in continuing down that path. There needs to be a huge incentive to put out into The Black once more.

Atmospheric worlds, with life and weather systems on it.
When FD comes around to doing this, does exploration become more viable.
