Fundamentally, no... for a variety of reasons.
Most disappointingly, SLF pilots have been lobotomised and no SLF is going to last long by itself.
That aside, without oversight SLFs should really be considered as nothing more than "smart missiles".
You launch them, they do their job and then they get exploded.
They're useful for distracting an enemy ship for a short time but they're not going to last long enough for any kind of AFK shennanigans.
They can, definitely, be an asset in CZs and RES's but, ideally, you need to act as your SLF's wing-man, protecting it and attacking the ships it targets.
I have a C7 fighter hangar in my Corvette and it's loaded with XG7s and Taipans.
I launch the XG7 when I have a specific target I want to explode and I launch the Taipan when I just want the SLF to be a nuisance.
AFAIK, the Taipan has the best armor of any of the SLFs but, even so, it's not going to last long without support.
You certainly couldn't launch one and then rely on it to defend your ship while you're AFK.
