optional HUD transparency

Please, consider adding option to have HUD backgrounds not transparent, looking similiar to station services interface.

Sometimes (quite often actually) information on HUD panels is unreadable because of various lights that shine through. This is mostly problematic in ships with more open cockpits, like Type9 f.ex.
Interface brightness option is just not enough.
I'm not a great fan of this universal HUD - I would prefer more unique design for every ship - I would especially prefer monitor displays over those holograms, but, since it probably will not happen, having some control over transparency of those displays might really help and it should not be a big problem to implement.

Some examples of how annoying this could be:

Yes.
But adding black background won't help in all cases. For example, reticles are not visible on target which boosts away due to bright engine exhaust, target info is not visible on bright lit panel.
I'm thinking more about outline around text/icons...

changing HUD colour helps, mines green and it works well for those circumstances. obviously not available on consoles

Yep, use hud color which is not available in the game's environment and it will never blend with the background, this sounds like a solution.
... Strange thing, all the way I thought that vanilla look is the best suited for all conditions.

It's not only about HUD on the front window, bit even more about left and right panels, as well as chat and info windows.
In Type10 f.ex. reverse thrusters are positioned very close to the cockpit, so when they work, bright light from them makes parts of left or right panels unreadable.
Sometimes lights on landing pads have similiar effect.

HUD lettering and numbers are more or less problematic too (especially gravity value, when landing on planet surface can be almost invisible against planet surface). Changing HUD color can help to some extent, but what works in certain circumstances, doesn't work in others. I changed hud color to blue when driving on yellowish planet, but it did not work that well in space for me. Not to mention changing the HUD color is messing up everything , like green for friends, red for enemies, which is good for clarity of information.
And those half transparent panels are still hard to read no matter what color are the letters.

Making an option to have a non transparent background for HUD should fix all of this - even HUD lettering is displayed on this background I think, although barely visible as thin outline.

Am fairly certain this is already in game. Check the Blur option in the graphics settings. Blur actually relates to panel backgrounds. with Blur on, light bleeds through, with Blur off the panels block light from getting through. Been like that in game since launch.

I think some people assumr blur is some special effect like in other games.

I have Blur Off.
This option makes lights (some of them) behind those panels more blurry, but apart from that not really much of a difference.

I propose to make an option to have those panels look more like this:

This is the outline I mentioned above.

The approach does not care about hud colors at all. It is available in the game already somewhere (HUD during landing on planet, for example) but not everywhere (right/left panels, reticles). Also nice to have an option to make the outlines stronger (i.e. customize darkness and thickness).

I would like this a lot. I'd also appreciate it, if we could get seperate brightness settings for the orange (combat mode) and blue (analyis mode) part of the HUD. It would make things so much more convenient and more eye-friendly.
