Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit

This rather reflects why I wish there was a proper option in game to use different colour schemes (hell, even if you had to pay for it, it'd be better than nothing). It's not just about whether or not orange looks pretty. It's an accessibility issue. It would be nice to be able to set up colours that best suit your own eyes and brain.

The orange on black is a standard that works for most (but not all) people. Font is important too. As 1 fixed option I can’t knock their choice on either point for accessibility.

But choice and more options for those that don’t work with orange on black would be nice. I wouldn’t change it as it works well for me but for those who have accessibility difficulty with it, options would be very useful while also making those who just want personal choice happy so a win for everyone if they do it.

IF you want a hud that is blue (maybe a bit purple) but does not mess with the radar colors to much you can try mine. It leaves friendlies as green, with allies as a bit more minty green. Hostiles are are a deep purple/kinda redish purple. See the heat color in screenshot for the "red" hostile color. Sorry but i could not get images to post so had to link it instead.

I find the official HUD colour jarring, and I don't mean in a marmalade way.

I've tried setting HUD colours in the files, and whilst it felt better to begin with, the compromise with friend/foe colours and station portraits looking even more like playstation 1 graphics made me more annoyed.

Do people change the HUD colours just for a change, or do they find the Orange really grating (pun definitely intended, even though I just realised it) like I do?

Was there someone at FD who really likes orange, and thought it was such a nice colour that they should code it into the game in such a way that eliminates choice?

I know it's a juicy subject and you may want to quash my opinion.

I've tried countless colour schemes, but I always end up back with the default. It may be boring (or jarring for some) but it is the most convenient colour for a HUD. Simple as that. Unless you stare directly into a star from up close, you won't have problems reading the HUD. With other colours there is always a situation where you say "I wish my HUD was orange, right now" :D

This is the OG color thread:

My theme is on page 49 ;)

I highly recommend anyone wanting their own custom theme to spend awhile tweaking theirs. I spent about an hour on my 'Empire Blue' theme and have been using it since.

Cheers, repped. That's already known, though. I'd like to be able to change the HUD colour without making everything else a ghastly shade of pink or green by altering RGB values and turning everything else in the colour field up/down.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm one of those 'some'. Even back in Premium Beta it made me feel nauseous, but I'm probably in a minority. There were a few people on the forums at the time talking about it.

Some people on this thread have said that it's the best HUD colour, but I don't know any other cockpit game, be it flight or racing car that has bright orange for its instrumentation panels, so I'm not sure why they would say that. I suppose you could argue that this game is based in the blackness of space so the contrast could be advantageous?

Anyway, the work that's going into 'Beyond' looks exciting. HUD colours may have to wait a bit longer ;)

Yes, I think it's the contrast. The orange is readable against almost any background, unlike blues and greens that tend to wash out against any brighter colour. Like I said, I've tried many. Most of the colours are fine as long as you're in deep space, but once you start doing planetary jobs on different surfaces, docking at stations, etc. you find out that every other colour has issues.
I'm probably lucky that I find the orange "just boring" and otherwise don't mind it. Plus it really is the only colour that works best in most situations. But someone like you is screwed, I guess. Have you tried to fiddle with the game's gamma and the HUD brightness? Maybe it would help a little.

I actually set my HUD to blue because playing with the default one was making my eyes uncomfortable after longer time. So for me it was not aesthetic choice only. Good thing that we can mess around with config at least.

Not really. If I have to I can fiddle with the numbers in the config file and put up with odd friend/foe colours and some portrait anomalies. I'd prefer to do it in game without pulling the RGB values for everything else. It's not the end of the world, just up for discussion ;)

Yeah, as stated above.
