Osiris: New Dawn

I like the base-building, crafting, first person survival stuff. Please add that to ED.

The music is very good.

Looks good, how big is the world in this game, can you explore the whole planet?

We don't really know at the moment. It seems to be endless - someone claims to have flown a huge distance across the surface and found no barrier. It could be planet sized, or just a flat plain with a skybox, but as it's still effectively in alpha everything could change.

The planet so far is static - always the same setup for every game - resources always in the same places, alien spawns always in the same places etc. This could be the pattern for the final game, or it might have randomization added - I don't know. It's not a voxel sandbox like Minecraft - more a scenario with variations like The Long Dark. Assets can be harvested for crafting materials etc, but the landscape isn't destructable.

The backstory is that there has been one Project Osiris expedition to the Gleise 581 system so far, and the gameplay takes place during the second expedition. There will be a plot of sorts I believe, as the devs say in the FAQ that:

"Players will be able to explore the planet, gain resources and materials to craft structures and equipment, manufacture vehicles and weapons with the goal of colonizing the planet. Players will come in frequent contact with the indigenous alien species (12 planned for Early Access launch) as they expand and explore more of the planet and – in time – uncover the dark mystery that hangs over Project Osiris."

Other planets in the system will also be open for exploration and colonization. There are two factions (both human) - the Earth government expedition, and renegades/separatists. They plan to have numerous playmodes including solo offline, private servers, and public servers (both PvE and PvP) but not all are working right now. Solo offline and private servers are, but there are a lot of teething problems. The alien presence can be adjusted by slider from zero through to insanely infested, but I don't know if this is just for the early access test phase. There will eventually be 4 character types, but at the moment you can only play as a science/exploration specialist.

It's still very unfinished and full of bugs, however it is pretty stable to play. It feels like they are up to the stage ED was at just prior to the end of alpha testing - starting to come together, but a lot to be added and fixed. The devs are very responsive and communicate frequently. There have been 3 patches since the EA release and they are adding some features suggested by the community. Release is planned for "2017" so that could be anything from 3-15 months away. I's say it has 6-12 months work required.

The devs are pitching it as something like a combination of The Martian and Promethius, and that's not a bad comparison. It has elements of Pitch Black as well. Gamewise a number of players have commented that it is rather like Ark in space.

The music and effects are good, and the graphics really nice. In fact some of the best I've seen in this style of game. Several notches better than any voxel-based game I've played. The alien and player animations are excellent - smooth and realistic. There is an interesting design tension in the game between open-world sandbox and adventure. It will be interesting to see how it all comes together, but so far it's quite impressive.

After playing this early access for a few days, it looks quite more polished than the usual early access. In fact it feels like an immersive experience. Do expect bugs though and not a few. None of the bugs I found exactly game breaking but still some people might find them annoying. Get it if you want to support, the current price seems fair and will pay off some gameplay days. Do not get it if you want a flawless gaming experience.

All in all, the atmosphere in this game is amazing. If the final product proceeds as it does now (almost daily updates and bug fixes) it should be a successful game which might be a next hit similar to dayZ or Ark Survival.

Just a further follow-up to the question above re. planet size. This is quoted from a post by a player in the testers' feedback forum:

"It's not a planet, its an infinite flat plain. I went 90k meters away from spawn and its all the same desert without resources. If it were a planet then the Long and Lat would only go to +90 or -90.

If you fly into space it does look like a planet, but once you transition back to the ground you're basically on a very large flat area."

Kind of like ED star systems in microcosm - an explorable area surrounded by infinite nothing. To transition to the next one you have to fly using the supported method.

Again, whether this is the final design or just for testing, I don't know.

Played for a while 12 hours , has good graphics smooth , no issues.

Weathers is good ,and the nights are very black at times , problematic when the critters are about.

Terrain is all different , so if your a Ranger type you'll like the landmarking in your mind to find your way around, nothing seems to repeat, so far , map is big

Of course in multi player , the first server I joined was full of budding murderer types , god I hate them, ( why cant we all just get along ) ... so I killed them both, lol to many years in Counterstrike
.. teach them too shoot at me :)...

PVE is coming.. Crafting is ok ,needs some work , tried building the Bio Dome 3 times , if its not lined up right, it fails ,you loose all the mats , sure its on the Bug list of things to do, all the other building had no problems setting them up. The game is Early Access so somethings don't work at all yet.. it will be like ARK, everyone sweating on the next Update , so the 'whatever' thing will work

It's an ok game for Early Access release , should be something special when finished ...

I'm going to watch this game with interest, it looks good and the write-ups so far here are pretty positive. I will however wait on this one, I think, got a few going on at present. ;)

This game has been popping up a lot on youtube, players on steam gone from couple of hundred to almost 5K in no time. I learned my lesson from NMS not to jump on the hype train but it does look interesting. Is it true that its made by 2 ppl ? that would actually worry me. I hope they start hiring a bigger staff. I saw the Devs talking i think on E3 or something saying its a 2 ppl operation. Does anyone know if they r still just 2 ppl working on it ?

Without going all white knight about it, there are a some major differences. It's an EA game so we can see and play what they are developing right now, player input is demonstrably being listened to and taken into consideration, the devs are very communicative - not just by making statements but by engaging in dialogue with players, there is a lot of material to see made by players and with player evaluation, and so on. It's a different development scene to NMS entirely.

To be honest I don't know. I've heard that as well but I don't have any facts. The "official" posts on their discussion forums on Steam have be made by half a dozen people, but only two are labelled as "Developers". Whatever the number, it is a small team, for sure.

EDIT - Just read a post on their discussions to the effect that the game has been developed by 2 people up until now, however with the start of the EA they will be taking more on board.

Its already impressive what 2 ppl did with the game. There is a lot of potential in it. Hope they do get more ppl aboard. I was planning to purchase it but i decided to wait for a bit and add it to my wishlist instead just to see how its gona go from here.

IGP made a video. This is the guy I found Subnautica through.

Getting eaten by a sandworm is a rite of passage in this game. Everyone gets eaten once - usually your first character. I was so stunned when I saw it the first time I didn't even think to run :p

I played the game for some time at my friends place - well it looks great but its just another clone of your standard gather, craft, survive game. Very obvious clone. Maybe when you get to drive vehicles later it gets better, but first contact with this game made my ask myself "do I really want to play THIS game again but with different assets?
Can anybody who played it more can comment on how this game is different, better from countless survival ones out there?

Not wrong...this is basic survival crafting with some minor twists.

Personally, I've avoid most survival games...only jumping on a couple that have sci-fi focus. So, from my perspective, I'm not burned out on these mechanics, though I understand anyone who would be after having played the multitude of others in the genre.

If someone makes a FPS game, is it a clone of Wolfenstein 3D?

I bought this two days ago and have been playing like 7 hours. This game has so huge potential and it already has a really immersive world, lots of things to do and one BIG planet to explore.
And with few friends, this is the best space survival entertainment i have seen in a while.
Also, being Early Access, this is really nicely put together, only few minor bugs and even multiplayer works flawlessly.
Cant wait to get all the content they are planning to add to this, the final version must be awesome!

Btw, play with some friends to get more out of this.. ;)

I guess I`m just fed up with the generic gather/craft mechanic, pretty sure its better with friends.

Problem starts when the game don't even try at the slightest to alter, change things. Thats why I asked if something new, special kicks in further down the road. I`m no saying the game is bad, its just too much like 4 or 6 ones that I already played. And before someone ask - yeah, I`m aware that every FPS is a pretty much same, every survival game is "the same" but come on, better games always stands out and feel fresh. This one does not to me.

Name a private server after the first system you discovered in Elite...

Once you build space craft you can colonise the entire system you've crashed in.

The combat is generally pretty poorly balanced but it's mainly a matter of tweaking simple values(based on the level up mechanics from player avatars anyway). As it is the PvP Public servers are kind of lame... you'll build a nice little settlement and immediately get ganked by a gaggle of screeching twelvies: the game really needs to expand the gradient between newbie and late game(as it stands you can skulk around gathering hoards of resources after building a couple of lockers and a forges in a very hidden locations and then power build a 'Crazily-OP-Mech-O'-Death' and own the server).

That said... having a private PvP server with four or so large colonies fighting for resources and territory(building walls and multiple turrets, etc...) would be a lot of fun(more so when it comes to racing for good real estate on new planets).

If you create a private server and set everything to hard this game is insanely hard(which I like)

Saw this go on sale on steam, but when I wish listed it an age ago I wasn’t sure it was more than a sci-fi themed shooter. I see there is station building and at least one ship, so that is encouraging. I’ll look for some play-throughs on YouTube after work but anyone here have recent experience? Steam reviews say it’s under new ownership that seems more dedicated to fleshing it out.
