Out of curiousty, does anyone stick with some of "lower level" ships?

I've flown all but the Anaconda to date. My favourite ship was my Battle Orca. Right now I run a FDL for Bounty Hunting, a Cobra III for smuggling and a Vulture for Combat Zones.

I use a Clipper for hunting down pirates for its speed and decent firepower, but really love the versatility of the Asp. It's the Honda Civic of ED

The cobra is my favorite ship. It has the right cost/utility ratio and can be configured to do anything you want in the game. That said, I am looking forward to having a sidewinder or eagle docked in my anaconda when that patch is released.

My only beef with the Cobra is that I wish the under-wing mounts could be on the underside of the nose, mirroring the medium points instead.

Just for the noise it makes, the viper was my favored small ship before upgrading to a cobra and then sideways into a vulture. The main thing that keeps me away from the bigger ships is the insurance tag, and the fact i am in open most of the time. Plus the smaller ships are just better for dog fighting.

I am enjoying my Diamondback Scout more than I thought I would but I think the Explorer will be better. Of the smaller ships I liked the Viper the most, but the Eagle can be spectacular in a fight.

I nearly always just fly the smaller ships but I have only been playing for 18 months, I may start to save my game from now on and buy some of the bigger ships !!!.
But to be honest I fly the smaller ships because I like them a lot more and it makes Elite a lot more Dangerous.

Completely agree with Elite being Dangerous in a small ship… Hence I'm not too much in a hurry to get an Anaconda.
First big payout I had (from a Sagittarius A* trip) was spent on an Orca, not exactly the 'I win' ship.

Think if I ever get to fly an Anaconda, it'll be geared for exploration.

I really, really, can't fly anything other then the eagle. I just can't man. I hop in my viper and its just, ugh, I feel like a fat kid in a swimming pool with those arm-floaters on. Also no ship looks half as cool as the eagle, not even close.

However it feels like to "progress" I need to set my precious eagle aside, otherwise I'll never be a real big boy in space. So I'm just wondering, are there any of you that feel the same way? I haven't tried the vulture and FDL again, do people find that those ships recreate the magic of the more nippy/small starter ships?

Stick with? No. I like my big ships quite a lot, but I've kept all my ships and I definitely enjoy taking the Eagle over to an RES occasionally. It's such a fun ship to fly, and it's nice to feel a little less secure about taking on a big target alone.

I fly giant mining ships now, but it was a lot of fun early on, mining in an Anarchy system in a Cobra with only two small guns. :D

I'm a one ship pilot. My ship is home in the void. I always saw it like Han and the Falcon, it becomes a part of your identity in game and I like to feel invested in it. I've tried everything up to an Asp, but everytime I jump right back in a Cobra. It just feels like home and I love flying it.

Can't wait to see how I can tinker with it when crafting comes to the Galaxy.

I enjoyed every new ship from Eagle to Vulture. Each slight loss of agility was more than made up for with strength. Then after the Vulture there was a big gap till I could afford a Fer de Lance, which is sadly when the pleasure of progress came to an end. The Vulture is the last of the dogfighters and where I will stay until a better super-heavy fighter comes along.

A combat equipped Clipper fits that role really well. Second fastest ship in the game and the low agility rating given by FD does not match the experience when flying it at all. It handles as well as a Vulture, with more firepower, more speed and mass-lock potential. The shields are weaker, but plenty of energy allows you to stash SCBs to make up for that. And yes, the Clipper can dog-fight.

Assemble a fleet. I have a Asp, Vulture, FDL, Eagle, hauler, many sidewinders, and a T9.. All have a specific purpose

^ That. Just some rough hints about ships that may fit your budget and the task at hand:

Dog-Fight Combat: Eagle / Viper / Courier / Vulture / Clipper
Gun-Boats: Python / Anaconda
Trading: Cobra / T-6 / Asp / T-7 / Clipper / Python / Anaconda
Mining: T-6 / Asp / Clipper / Python
Exploring: Hauler / T-6 / Asp / Anaconda

I have flown all of the above for these tasks. When it comes to fun, Courier and Clipper top my list. My fleet currently has Courier, Vulture, Clipper, Asp and Anaconda. Going to re-add a mining Python for 1.4.

you forgot about the diamondbacks
and you missed out smuggling and piracy in your list! :D

Well I suppose so, I only keep two ships, and only what I like rather than what counts towards so called 'status'. I have my original Cobra and the Vulture, both fitted out without credits being a consideration and exactly how I want them. I have enough to buy a MKIV Cobra when that arrives and it looks like I will be getting the new Viper as well. At that point I will take stock and decide if I want to turn a few ships into a bigger one but I will keep the MKIII whatever, its like my classic car in ED (apart from the fact that it starts on the button every time!!)

Ahh good to hear from a kindred spirit..after one month I stopped chasing credits cos I had the ship I wanted, buffed to the max - the vulture. However, to keep it interesting in that awesome beast, I had to only do activities with top end difficulty ie assassinations, authority kills, SSS (4 vultures & 3 anacondas were my favourites!..anything harder was impossible!)
After 3-4 months, I thought why not try the FDL? cos it sure looks good but it just didn't suit the way I like to fly and hunt, so I got rid after 2 days!!
I love the eagle, but it just takes so long to kill the big stuff, although it can be done close up - the real problem is wings, where this problem of limited firepower is exacerbated by its pathetic shields ..FD has made the best ship in the game unusable for anything but the simplest tasks!
I then changed to the DBS which I still really love..it is great at everything, although weak shields has cost me in SSS - it is not capable of taking 4 vultures or 3 Anacondas (unless there is a glitch with the ships ie only 2 fire at the same time..& one time 3 anacondas didn't fire at all while I collected the easiest 500k bounty ever! LOL)
Yesterday I changed to the Courier, 'was initially very disappointed but after some great advice from this forum, I realised the way weight affects this ship is incredible!! - I nearly sold it because agility and speed is everything for me in a ship, but now I am keeping it (my DBS will remain in the hanger at Wolf 906 for sure!), although I'm still experimenting with loadouts to get it exactly the way I want it - this one could be the ship I've been looking for..everthing the Eagle should have been!
