Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

A massive thank you everyone on here, especially to CMDR Rusticolus for the rescue and Surly Badger for the OP.

After realising my calculation error this morning and frantically trying to find economical routes to anywhere , jettisoning everything of small value, turning everything off and having a mild panic (it's only a game after all!) I remembered seeing this thread earlier and calmed down a little. After a rather tense wait for my white knight to arrive I simply sat back and watched my fuel line grow (oo-er). Seeing CMDR Rusticolus' Cobra thrusting up towards my cockpit was fantastic , if a little nerve shredding as I'd turned off my shields!

Anywho saefly back in Walla enjoying a quiet evening propping up a bar and having 'Fuel Scoop' tattooed on the back of my hand.

here's a rather poor picture of our meet.

thanks again - happy flying

How do you refuel with hydrogen canisters? I bought 4, but there was no option to refuel when I selected them in my cargo bay? What method do you use?

If not from canisters. then how do you transfer fuel to others in need?

You need a fuel probe controller. Then, you buy munitions (probes) each probe delivers 1t of fuel and takes 1t of cargo space. I have a low-end controller and an 8t storage bay allocated.

Sorry guys, happy to fly days to rescue some 'fool with no fuel', but not prepared to wade through the sesspit that is Dangerous Discussions

Well it was my fault that it got moved here by the mod, if we agree i will message him again and ask to put it back into the explorers area?

Brilliant idea OP.

Happy to be counted as a fuel rat - i'll pick up the bits first chance I get.

Oops - Game name is CMDR Talltooticus

Loving this thread, happy to help anyone in distress just for the adventure! I've got 8 fuel pods on board, probably going to be noodling around the bubble for a while before heading out towards the core..

It doesn't take long for this post to get lost in the caggage of this thread, come on Mods please move this post to where it originally was.

Its a shame. I'd like to think the mod was trying to be helpful by merging to the newer thread instead of merging to the original (which is customary). But yeah, please move back to exploration! :)

oh oh and you can add me to the growing list of fuel rats. I'm Pacific time zone.

So what would be an ideal rat ship? Asp for the jump? Clipper for SC speed? Something haulerish for fuel room? Im thinking of outfitting a ship specifically for fuel-ratting when I get home. I feel like the FDS has an industrial look to it and feels good for a fueling ship, but a T7 might be cool too. Thoughts on the perfect fuel barge?

Have been toying for a while with the idea of putting together a chat service & (iOS) app, it'd be useful for Elite in general but would be ideal for the Fuel Rats, and co-ordinating the rescue timing etc. So you'd have player -> player and group (e.g. the Fuel Rat group, or a faction or Power) channels. Ideally it'd be styled to be consistent with the ships' HUD, so you could have your tablet next to your screen like an additional cockpit module.

It'd be really handy if ED had an API to check who's online (i.e. which Fuel Rats are "On Duty") and find the closest Rat etc. but for the foreseeable future that'd have to be updated manually.

Oooooh! Me likey!
My only concern is; How to bring it to the great masses out there? Ozmodion gave us some much needed attention for sure, but there are hordes of people who's not on these forums, and most of all, the "newbies", who are after all, the most likely to have such... umm accidents :p

Popped back to Lembava as I was only 1KLY out and fitted a fuel transferer (horrible word) module.

I've only got room for a class 3 cargo hold so can only run with 8 limpets, which is a bit naff. I have a class 5 fixer module which to be honest I'd be happy to do without (and the class 3 to fix it) so should I go for a class 5 cargo hold and wander the spaceways like some kind of big fat fuel rat? Hell I could fit a couple of class 3s as well! Or should I run with 2 x class 3 AFMUs and one class 5 cargo hold full of limpets?

Oh and I am okay to run an Asp with a A3 powerplant? It says I need 12.68 to run but only have 12 available - I guess switching everything non-essential off is fine... I seem to be running with just over 34LY jump range now.

Well, ideally Frontier would do this themselves since they have all the API-hooky goodness that lets them know everything about a player and their status, and they can incorporate it right into the ship's displays.

But given they have their own priorities (sniff..) we'd have to do the promotion ourselves. I'd envision a portal site somewhere listing all groups - such as the Fuel Rats - and someone could create a new group, add a logo, background image and some introduction to draw people in. (perhaps you could also add additional group info, so you could have faction-specific or role-specific styling of the chat GUI).

So people visit the portal, find the Fuel Rats, and send a help request message to the group or directly to a specific Rat; or can send a message to apply to be a Rat. You could add persistence to certain messages, so "I'm stuck and need help!" messages stick on the server even if there's no one online at that time, the next time any Rat signs in they'll get it. But "I'm approaching your system now, are you ready..." type messages probably can be dumped once received.

I've used MQTT in the past (a lightweight socket server/protocol) which would be suitable for this, easily supports tens of thousands of concurrent users (ambitious? moi?), and can support Websockets so it works right in any recent-ish browser.

How do you promote the portal? Dunno. Does Galnet accept 3rd party site promotion? ;)

If people are interested in this, please let me know and I'll start looking for cheap hosting options for the chat server.

Getting the word out on other channels, like twitter and facebook will help. I have been gently spamming twitter but my ED focused account is fairly new and I don't have huge reach yet (my CMDR Rusticolus twitter account is in my signature, everyone feel free to follow and retweet the CMDR safety notice ;) ).

Does anyone know any of the Lave Radio CMDRs? They have a community section on the podcast so I am sure they would give us a shout out.
