Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

Well, ideally Frontier would do this themselves since they have all the API-hooky goodness that lets them know everything about a player and their status, and they can incorporate it right into the ship's displays.

But given they have their own priorities (sniff..) we'd have to do the promotion ourselves. I'd envision a portal site somewhere listing all groups - such as the Fuel Rats - and someone could create a new group, add a logo, background image and some introduction to draw people in. (perhaps you could also add additional group info, so you could have faction-specific or role-specific styling of the chat GUI).

So people visit the portal, find the Fuel Rats, and send a help request message to the group or directly to a specific Rat; or can send a message to apply to be a Rat. You could add persistence to certain messages, so "I'm stuck and need help!" messages stick on the server even if there's no one online at that time, the next time any Rat signs in they'll get it. But "I'm approaching your system now, are you ready..." type messages probably can be dumped once received.

I've used MQTT in the past (a lightweight socket server/protocol) which would be suitable for this, easily supports tens of thousands of concurrent users (ambitious? moi?), and can support Websockets so it works right in any recent-ish browser.

How do you promote the portal? Dunno. Does Galnet accept 3rd party site promotion? ;)

If people are interested in this, please let me know and I'll start looking for cheap hosting options for the chat server.

Oh, good point about GalNet - there is a thread somewhere on here for submitting news - maybe someone could write up CMDR Anuranium's first rescue and submit it.

Yep, definitely interested and happy to hook up something using the fuelrats.org domain (or sub-domain) if appropriate. I have used '5 Quid Host' for cheap hosting in the past.

Good idea, make it an official GalNet story, that will help.

Great idea - count me in. I'm about 7kly into the journey to Sag A* with 16 fuel drones and a 64t fuel tank. If I'm near you and you need fuel, I'll be there.

We almost got another shout last night - someone in Mahddogg's twitch chat thought he couldn't get to a scoopable...just as I posted a link to us, he found one :(

Should I feel bad about being disappointed? ;)

Just to add I am now 'out there' with 16 limpets on board. I have *no* idea how to actually refuel anyone but I'll turn up if needed and get directions while I'm there :)

(not even joined a wing yet, so that'll be new as well!)

We interrupt this thread with a Breaking News Bulletin!!

For all intent an purposes this is in the News Bulletin rotation of Radio Sidewinder now.
But you may not get to hear it until all the old Bulletins have finished their current 3hr cycle..
..Then it could be up to another 3hrs till this one get's its turn to be broadcast.

The Fuel Rats also get a shout out here too..

Great Ceska! I cannot listen to it right now as I am working, but I've already heard the Fuel Rats shout out, and as always: Outstanding work! Thank you for your coverage!
Now... weekend is closing in... can we expect a surge of customers?

Love this idea.

Might I suggest Fuel Rats setup a Twitter Account. All pilots can follow that account and the Main Account can Push out the requests for help that way. You can include the Pilot name and the location. Might hit people faster in an emergency.
I am sure that someone with some IFTTT skills can have a trigger to Tweet the info from another source such as an email account of webform.

OMG! An actual use for Twitter. I'd actually create an account to get these updates.
