I vaguely recall a dev post saying that you don't actually join an open instance until you've done the first SC ...

When I was trying to save a fellow in Open (unsuccessfully, sadly) it went fine as soon as we winged up - he logged in and accepted my wing request, and we could immediately see each other.
Unfortunately, he was 12km away, and had wasted most of his 2m30s of oxygen already somehow.

That is completely up to the Rat in question. Since we are an Anarchic (?) group all we really agree on is: "I have fuel, you don't, any questions?"

Any catalogue stars nearby, as Galaxy Map search doesn't find the star (or most other ICZ stars I saw on the map)?

EDIT: scratch that - CMDR Anuranium is almost there. I was only 30 LY away but off making some dinner, so missed the call!
