Out of Fuel? - Explorer Rescue Service, The Fuel Rats

Okay, we had kind of a weird one just minutes ago.
[...]
Welcome to the fuel rats,

we understand you have no choice in the matter of choosing your fuel providing services and we appreciate choosing fuel rats.

Are you low on fuel, press 1
Do you have malfunctions, press 2
Do you want more options, press 3
Do you want fewer options, press 4
Do you want to speak with one of our operatives, move to mumbai

So, just for your information (in case anyone wondered why i am out of the ratpack):

Surly_Badger kicked me out after the incident for me refusing to unblock the code ingame.
(meaning i refuse to be of service to them ever again.)

*message ends*
Bah.

Fuel Rat drama.

Well, it had to happen some time :(

Drama!

I did not realise the channel name had changed so dutifully joined #fuelrats this morning. A commander entered, "Help?" he said. His name, the Irish Gaelic moniker "Cumhaill" was familiar to me.

"Fionn?" I asked.

"Beornfrith!"

The commander in question and I belong to the same player group, you may remember us as the group who instigated a combat CG at Volungu. Anyway, he was 350ish light years away so off I trotted. Unfortunately, my Python Glædheort only has a jump range of 15ly and as I was busy mission running my cargo hold was full, dropping that even further. I reached the system, however, and instructed Fionn to log in.

...I could not see him. Instancing issues! :( In and out of SC I jumped, enabling and disabling nav-lock. I dropped in on his beacon a total of eight times but could not see him at all.

Commanders Anuranium and Kerenn stepped in to offer an extra bit of help but with Fionn's oxygen supply down to around 3 minutes things were getting a bit tight.

Eventually, my fellow Fuel Rats arrived in the system. We all (including the rescuee) completely restarted Elite and sent text to each other upon signing in; Anuranium's idea to try to ensure that we would all be in the right instance.

And now, the moment came: We had to tell Fionn to enter the game. His wing beacon appeared and three hungry rats descended upon it. We all arrived in the same instance and proceeded to throw limpet after limpet at our rescuee, engorging his Asp with fuel. I accidentally boosted but managed to duck underneath Fionn's Asp; I was momentarily unable to breathe as a result of doing so as I realise I would likely have crushed him to death had I not avoided him in time.

With the refuel complete, Fionn informed us that he had less than a minute of oxygen remaining. 49 seconds in fact!

Anuranium and Kerenn are insisting that this is my rescue and that I have claimed a record for "Cutting it most fine" rescue but I very much think of it as a group effort, so will not be submitting this to Surly Badger for my personal tally. I honestly think this should be written down as an example of great team work helping another pilot out.

The rescue took place in: PRAEA EUQ SY-S B3-3

Kerenn took a group photo and I hope he is able to post it but here's a less interesting photo:

EDIT: I did get a video of the final rescue but I am in the process of setting up a new laptop and do not have any editing software installed as of yet.

Hmm, you are the second one that seems to see drama in there.
I just wanted to state that it was not my decision to leave.
(Well, indirectly, by refusing to unblock some ats.)
And that i would gladly come back if Surly Badger would revise that
"rule" that anyone has to be of service to everyone without caring about involved
Dangers.

If that is being "Drama Queen" so be it.

No, no, no. I am not accusing you of being a drama queen.

Just sorry to see disagreements like this emerge, without pointing the finger at anyone.

Perhaps this needs to be clarified?

According to this page I perused when I requested to join a couple of pages back;

There is no leadership, authority, or rule about how Fuel Rats operate. If a Fuel Rat agrees to rescue you, they may be doing it simply for the fun of it, or they may want any marketable organs you're not using.

If this is truly a conversation that needs had, can we move it out of the forum and into the IRC or something? keep the channel clear for rescues?
Just a thought.

That may be so. But if the founder of the Rats asks me to leave i comply.
Because i am rised that way. For the record: i know i could simply lie about
having them removed from the comms blacklist, but thats not the way i was risen, either. ;)

Any player can choose to refuel who they wish to refuel, and can deny this service to anyone for any reason.
However, you can not deny refueling services if you are representing the Fuel Rats.
From what I saw, you weren't kicked out, you were advised to leave [if you did not want to refuel specific CMDRs/create a blacklist].

Got you covered, mate !

On the first image you can clearly see the Limpets heading toward the sun. Anuranium is in the Anaconda on the left, Beorn in the Pirate Python in the middle, Fionn is in the Asp to the top left and "Bundle o' Joy" is the closest Asp you can find !

Had to drop by and personally deliver my thanks to the Fuel Rats! Beornfrið wrote a pretty good synopsis of the rescue... but here it is from my perspective:
Got myself into a pickle. On the way back from exploration I was running low on fuel. Saw my next stop would consume all my remaining fuel and was a T-Tauri. I hit the Galaxy map and found a nearby scoopable star and entered Frameshift.
I dropped out without any fuel at that T-Tauri! I forgot to change my Nav target!
What was I going to do?
I called the FuelRats, that's what!
Just so happened that my good friend CMDR Beornfrið was on duty in the #FuelRats chat. I didn't know it had changed to #RatChat so I was lucky he was monitoring it.
Beornfrið came out to rescue me but with under three minutes of air left he still couldn't find me thanks to instancing issues.
I logged out and friended CMDR's Kerenn and Anuranium who winged up with Beornfrið.
I was down to 49 seconds of air and absolutely no hope when *BAM* I got hit by a Limpet and the report that "Fuel Transfer" was complete. My life support came back online and, thanks to the three of them, I had enough fuel to continue my journey.
These guys are awesome!
I was able to deliver my exploration data to Lembava where I'm now in the 15th percentile of that particular CG. The Fuel Rats literally saved my ASP!

Tighest rescue... For now ! You look pretty in that second picture.

I love the pictures, nice one! I'd also point out that I fly with pirate colours but am as loyal a Fed as you can get; I'm not actually a pirate :) ! Happy we could help you, Fionn!

I've been reading some of this great stuff in this thread. Would you guys happen to have any sort of 'pro tips' for explorers from a Ratpack perspective? For example, a list of suggested exploring/rat pack vessels/fits, etc. I'd be interested in seeing what sort of ships you guys fly from your collective experiences and why/how it helps make your jobs more successful/easier. Maybe something like the 'Recommended Ratpack Vessels' etc. etc. that could be found on your website? Just a thought.

I think that's a pretty nifty idea!

I'll give you my own input about my personal situation. As a player I like to do a bit of everything; some combat, some trading, some missions etc. I have a Python and absolutely love it. It's firepower makes it a formidable foe if I come up against another commander as well as making it a good choice for conflict zones and occasional periods in Resource Extraction Sites. Due to various real-life issues I am quite prone to confusion so, although I own a dedicated explorer, I like to keep my ship multi-purpose so that I am free to do as I please without worrying about fittings should a call come in.

As such, my Python is heavily armed (which in light of recent events may help during an ambush if it happens) but always carries a fuel drone controller and a stock of drones (and tea). This means that I am immediately ready to plot a route and head on over to a stranded pilot, even if I am busy doing something else.

The downside is the Python's range, which is about 15 light years in my current set up. That said, by being in a state of constant-readiness I can set off within seconds if needs be. I don't need to worry about being twenty jumps from my Ratship but I also don't need to worry about being in "the wrong ship" for doing other tasks I want to.

So for me personally, the multirole ability of the Python makes it the perfect Ratship for me even though it is perhaps not the most suitable for the task overall.

Personally I fly a big yellow Python. It's a Python because that's what I spent my Sag A* exploration money on and the novelty of flying it hasn't worn off. It's yellow because it makes it look like an AA van ...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=150703&page=20&p=2454791&viewfull=1#post2454791

Is it any good as a ratmobile? No idea, I haven't managed to refuel anyone yet. It's not bad tho.

What you need for a ratmobile is:

a) range
b) fuel scoop
c) fuel transfer limpet control
d) minimum of 8 limpet drones in your cargo (some people also like to give free gifts, such as tea, and/or take payment, such as tea)

The thing is, when the ratsignal goes off several rats typically scramble for the rescue. This is partly because it's often useful to have more than one person on the case (instancing issues can mean that some people have problems getting in to the client), but mostly because it's fun. So, unless you're lucky enough to be sitting right next to the system where the stranded commander happens to be, you'll be in a scramble race across maybe 150lys (and once over 7000!). In order to stand a chance of getting there first you need range + scoop.

Edit: having just read my own advice I now see where I'm going wrong and why I haven't managed to rescue anyone. The Python does NOT have good range. It is still a great ship tho' and has WAY more guns on it than the average AA van :D

As I hear that question more and more I'll try answer it best I can.
There is no one "Rat Vessel". All you need is a three internals : a C3 rack to put 8t cargo bay (buy the limpets in the munition screen), a fuel transfer controller and a fuel scoop (so as not to end up stranded yourself).
With that said I use an Asp Explorer configured for long jump range and I put Scanners to make money "en route" to a Rescue.
But my ideal Rat Ship will have to be an Anaconda with those three internals and nothing else. A huge empty cavern eating light-years and hydrogen fuel. 40LY range means you'll never be further than 5 jumps from a stranded pilot in the bubble.
