Pay2Win made it to Elite

Hopefully the community backlash will be suitably loud
What, a couple of dozen vociferous forumites crying in their cornflakes? Which is what it appears to be...

Loving the lively debate over FD's actions to improve the game for everyone, for a price, naturally!

For all of the years I've been on this forum there have been many, many, topics on engineering, grind, how disadvantaged new players are compared to anyone playing for a week or more... Nowt but complaints that the game (although dead, apparently, many times!) is too hard, takes too much time to get anywhere, usual stuff from gamers. So FD go the path of "give us money to save your time" and that is wrong too.

Give up Frontier, pull the plug on the game and let the unhappy folk here go play Star Citizen instead...

I wonder how many of the rage quitters here will be playing in a few days time?

Wouldn't mind if that paid for proper expansions in the future. 😁

But it's funny to see how people who didn't miss a single chance to make fun of SC for selling ships for RL money are now supporting Frontier's decision.

Having recently looked into how Star Citizen sells ships for real-car prices that don't exist and most likely never will, I don't think that what FDev will do is even remotely that rotten.

Disgusting move from Frontier. The company's standpoint under Braben was that Elite would NEVER be monetized like this. In the wake of the PR mess and the way Frontier treated their employees during their layoffs, they squeeze the playerbase.

Hopefully the community backlash will be suitably loud and we'll see them change tack on this.
it doesn't have to be loud, it's enough that no one will buy it, but let's not kid ourselves, people are not the smartest when it comes to MTX and early access.

Very simple. Some people want ultimate superiority over others. Nowadays, a gank requires a lot of grinding, but with arx you can immediately start by exterminating everyone in the open.
I don't imagine it will be like that. It's gonna be anti-xenos ship so ppl can dive into the Thargoid stuff right away without having to do the asinine grind. It's Pay2Skip.

Youtubers, top 1% of pilots?
CMDr Mechan is 100% in the top 1% AX pilots out there🙂 And many very good PvP pilots also have a Youtube channel—they're just not big and visible; you have to search for specific terms regularly for The Algorithm to start recommending them semi-reliably in your feed.
I'm imagining something with the phasing CG multis that lets you get a few more of those mediums that do huge hardpoint damage for arx.
Well, IMO, these specific guns (of which I own two) have enough of drawbacks (jitter, ammo reserves, low AP) to not classify as OP. But I get the sentiment and agree.
id happily throw 30 or so euros fdevs way...
30€ per month is a very significant chunk of my disposable income. It simply wouldn't be sustainable for me, and I imagine many other players, especially in the poorer countries (eg eastern parts of Europe).
a bunch of newcomers on freshly purchased top ships will break into an open game, destroying everyone in a row getting utterly atomized by players who actually know what they're doing, then going to Reddit to cry and accuse veteran players of cheating.
FTWY. Side note: my PvE Chief can potentially one-shot an unengineered Anaconda's power plant and engines while shooting four beam lasers indefinitely with 4 pips to WEP. I'm sure this will look like cheating to new players not well-versed in combat mechanics and engineering effects🤪

It's obviously not on the same scale, but the principle is the same.

My initial main point stands "Nurture the dedicated fan base you have; don't abuse it."
The very same fan base who decry spending anything on the game having bought into the kickstarter?
Many of these fans have been bemoaning 'grind' in the game for years, literally, perhaps a level head might see these actions as trying to nurture those same, unhappy, fans?

I'll make fun of the pruchasers of .jpg spaceships in a game I already 'pledged' money to as much as I wish.
When FD start charging £1,000's for something that doens't exist in the game, and is unlikely to ever exist, then I'll berate them... Until then I consider the effort to raise funding for development of this game (rather than another luxury yacht for the top brass) as a sensible move, and chuckle, quietly, at the outrage generated on the forum... (probasbly reddit too, but that would be SOP regardless!)

I think there's been a lot of misunderstanding here. As I understand the FD announcement, you pay ARX to unlock the Python II early, and then you still have to buy it with credits in the game. I guess that will apply to other pre-engineered ships in future too. No-one is going to be skipping gameplay.
is this the case? if so its a storm in a teacup and i am relieved!. i had visions of being able to buy pre engineered ships with cash, vs spending hrs looking for materials and unlocking engineers......................

I would like an FD person to confirm this however.

That's two different things. You can buy early access for the Python Mk II (and probably the other new ship variants coming out this year). The early access will allow you to purchase the ship in game, with credits as usual.

You can also buy fully outfitted ships. We don't know if that actually includes any Engineering. You won't have to buy these with credits or materials. Not a lot of detail yet on things like how rebuy will work.

ok so it could be nothing or it could be standard free to play nonsense but in a pay to play game. buying engineered ships in the game for cash would be a worrying precedent imo... in principle buying an A rated ship is also a poor look imo, but in practice its not that big a deal considering you can get an A rated python from a new account within a handful of hrs

also what happens when a new player buys a brand new cutter for cash............ and then crashes it without the credits to buy back? do they get life time insurance as well? in which case that will be a griefers paradise, if not the complaints will be loud when someone loses their ship they paid cash for!.

Paying real money for early access to a ship? Hmm, not really a fan, but better than only being able to get it with real money. I guess how many early-access Python Mk II's FDev actually sell will determine whether this is a good idea for them or not. I won't be paying a penny, sorry guys. I backed the game at a level that means it would have been far cheaper for me to buy things as they released. I'm fine with that, I wanted ED to be made back in the day - as I did Star Citizen - so I stumped up premium AAA+ game title levels of money for it. I'm good with that.

Are FDev trying to utilise FOMO here? Many of us are "desperate" (aka, ameniable to the idea) of new ships after a very long drought in that regard. Will that translate to many being prepared to pay real money for it? How much is the Python II early access in real money? I don't even know how much ARX cost. £5? I can see people happily dropping that on a new ship, that will give them many hours of content outfitting it etc. that's before they start using it in anger. £10? Some will likely pay more than that for Coffee a day, a trivial amount to some. £15? Hmm, that's approaching full indy game money there, just for a ship... that'll be free in three months.

Talk of pre-configured ships for certain roles - with or without Engineering. That's a great idea. Were those needing real money too though, or were they a regular credits purchase? A fully-engineered and outfitted ship available for £££, the very definition of pay to "win", where "win" is get stuff without actually having to play, giving you a potential advantage over those who didn't. I think open might get a bit more salty as a result...

I will watch with interest how this goes. Good luck to FDev raising some dosh to keep the game going. As long as people perceive value in getting things early, it's all good.

You know, you do you FDev, if this works and means I get free stuff (eventually) in ED, ships, features etc. then I'm ok with it. I'll be a bit salty seeing a Python Mk II when I can't buy one (yet) so I will shoot you* - I might even shoot you in my Cobra Mk IV.... :)

* Kidding

I somehow doubt the Arx Ship packages will include Fully G5 murder boats, but i guess we will find out soon enough
And I’m afraid that all Fdev’s efforts will be aimed at drawing new paid ships, and not a planet with an atmosphere or history.

This stagnation is even worse than the newbie gankers, who make it difficult to fight the Thargoids or complete missions.

I certainly hope so. More players playing the game can only be a plus.
Not always. Do you need 12 year old pubg gamers in ED?
