Pay2Win made it to Elite

Let's be blunt about it, if it was considered OK to give backers of the game an advantage over others as they spent their money in different tiers, why consider a similar move (but open to everyone and their dog (but not Legacy players)) predatory?
Given the past history of threads fighting over thr CM4 I'd say that no, a lot didn't really find it ok but it was a matter confined in the past, or so we thought.

This. Yes, paying real money to get an advantage in the game is defined as "pay to win", but the question really is whether or not it is so far "down the river" to be deemed predatory. The current implementation is far from it, and I think there is enough head room for FDev to get more money from it without deserving the predatory stamp.

It'll never change - it is the nature of games...
The CM4 debate has been going on since I joined the forum, no doubt the P2 (and whatever follows) -despite being available to all - will echo across the annals of forum time for eternity also...

@ OP: Really? I paid handsomely for the Stellar. What else did I win? Because, if there's more I got comin', then I want it.

How different is selling Beta Access to selling Early Access? One word, big deal. What does beta even mean, amirite?

And, no one is 'winning' with those pre-made ships. It's all pretty well tucked in. No one can buy internals or weapons and use them on a super ship. The Pre-mades are serviceable but not dominating. The game turns 10 yrs old, we can afford some daylight to encourage and support newer players.

It amused me the first time I read the 'Predatory' accusation...
... and the last time.

When the store contains powerful assets, that cannot be obtained by playing, in exchange for Arx (hence cash) - (everything in the pre-build P2 can be obtained by play, apart from the zero rebuy, of course (I have 4 zero rebuy ships now!)) - perhaps then it would earn the title, otherwise it is just providing assets from the game to those who are, perhaps, endowed with more money than time to play.

Such an attitude as mine is at odds with some, so be it.

And don't forget the Horizons DLC with engineering. I mean, that was for a long time only available with money (buying the DLC), and a serious must-have feature in order to compete. If that wasn't "pay to win" already, what is? I guess the current discussion is only so fueled because it now got to MTX instead of big DLCs. But to be fair, I think this is actually easier to handle for the company. For example that wonderful module scrapper contact idea in the other thread: if you combine that with ARX unlock, you have your incentive for the developers and their management to implement a really cool convenience feature and get immediate feedback from the market from it. That's not really possible in such an agile way with classic DLCs.

Both are deadly predators. The fact that one isn’t deadly to you doesn’t change its fundamental nature.

I swear, new page, new entry to the "what do I win" posts that have been addressed. It's generally understood that the term has included pay to skip transactions in the wider gaming sphere as well as paid advantages (rebuy reduction and temporary ship exclusivity) that can be obtained with cash.

Edit: I think I'm just going to try to make PA (paid advantages) a thing so we can put this whole part of the argument to bed.

It will never be put to bed.

Solely because there are 2 camps, those who don't give a flying fig about a definition that is "generally understood" to mean one thing, and the others who are passionate about the very same thing for whatever reason.

ETA: My brother has been playing a P2W game on his tablet for around 5 years, he has spent around £100 on things he thought would improve the game for him over those years (allegedly, others have spent £1,000's in the same game), which is actually less than I have spent playing ED/O over several accounts.

Odd that in a P2W scenario, a half-sensible person manages to spend less than me on cosmetics...
