PC car games with in-depth car customisation?

All I wanna know is... can Steve Jackson stop suing people and sort out the Car Wars IP for a new take on Autoduel, please?

This thread has reignited my old passion for racing games. I used to be really into them, but my mega-obsession with ED for so many years meant that they more or less fell by the way side. Because of this topic, I dusted off my old copy of Dirt Rally, started a fresh career and spent the last couple days muscling my way from the Open "noob" division to the Elite division, only one rank beneath the ultimate Masters. I'm driving with a controller so I feel I'm handicapped, but even so the visceral thrill of coming out on top in an event and pushing your career forward is unparalleled. For anyone who hasn't tried it, it's a whole different kind of racing then something like Project Cars 2 (which I just recently picked up), much grittier and bare knuckle. The feeling of speed, danger and flatout adrenaline is just savage. I'm now saving up for a wheel and stand:)

I don't want to taste this thrill again, because I don't have a wheel anymore, and even worse, I sold my racing sim seat too. :)
Though my unused Rift could get a purpose again.

I do occasionally some silly GTA racing, and Wreckfest is on my watchlist too. I'd buy Forza Horizons if it wasn't that silly expensive.

Little off-topic, sorry Unikorn, but Assetto Corsa Competizione left early access and its pretty much ready (apart from VR that is very bugged).
In my opinion its a pinnacle of racing sims as far as GT serie is concerned. Laser scanned tracks and cars, tremedous immersive feeling inside of the cars, great physics and sound, dynamic weather, SP/Online/Career mode, in depth tuning. Its incredible. Definitely worth getting if you are serious racing fan, really REALLY play this with proper wheel setup. It has controller/M+K support but - dont bother.

Mixed Steam reviews are 99% from unhappy VR users.

Not sure if I should thank you guys or throw moldy fruit at you, but because of this thread, I had my first interaction with the Microsoft Store yesterday, and I bought Forza Horizon 4 Ultimate xD And it's epic. If anyone is on the fence and has a decent PC, the demo actually is quite in-depth, considering it's a miracle there is a demo at all. Greetings from Horizon, slip and sliding down the icy roads in a 1986 Ford Escort Cosworth ;)

The problem I'm having due to this stupid thread is figuring out a way to convert my little portion of the shared office space into a full on sim racing pit without Mrs. Barron noticing.
