News Peek of the Week: Cobra Mk IV

I quite like it in a strange sort of way. Kind of reminds me of a manta-ray with those mandibles. The bulk indicates more cargo space and the front looks like there is a centred hard-point. Pure speculation of course :)

Looks to me as though the rear is no longer flat. If you look at the cooling vents (if that's what they are?) on the top you can see that the IV not only extends further rearwards than the III but that this distance is greater at the wing tips than the centre. This would give it a slight V-shape when viewed from above.

I'm not actually sure whether it's any chunkier than the original design, depth-wise (which would be a good thing IMO :)); I think that might just be an illusion of the camera angle combined with this new V-shape. That would also be easier from a modelling standpoint as the angles would remain the same and mapping would also likely require less adjustment (though I've not seen the UV template).

As to the hardpoint; I'm guessing it's another medium, under the nose. Possibly even a small, but hopefully a medium ;). Would be fantastic if it was a large HP, but I'm not sure there's space + that would be a rather massive upgrade and surely require a lot more power etc too. The bulge on the back doesn't seem the right location for a HP IMO; it's the same bulge as on the III so you'd have to assume it's that shape for a specific reason (and therefore you can't just stick a weapon in it, regardless as to weather it'd fit or not).

As I've said before, I really hope this is a significant step up from the Mk. III. It's aimed solely at players who've had the game for some time, so a low/mid-tier ship is of little use to them. Something in the Asp/Vulture bracket (or above!) would fit the bill quite well IMO.

I also hope that FD don't introduce a Cobra Mk. V any time soon as that would render our 'special reward' somewhat useless ;P.

edit....or, do it like MWO style, sell unique patterns that only unlock for each chassis type and then sell colors that can be used for all ships.

This! Works great and I'm still buying new patterns! I am a founder of the game and have my name in the credits. At release it had the same problems like ed now. Just btw.

I would really like the MK IV to have a 30+ ly jump range and good scooping speed if fitted for exploration. Horizons IS an expansion with a strong exploration focus, after all...
You're absolutely right, it's about time they released more exploration vessels, because right now we still only have the A-

Oh, wait.

Looks like a bit of a fusion of the Cobra and the Viper.

To clarify, it has the overall hull appearance of a Cobra but the leading edge looks like the Viper with those "teeth".

The lower hardpoint placement on the Cobra has been problematic due to the spread of the hardpoints and being so far behind the leading edge. If the hardpoints are located more as per the Viper, which might be indicated by the redesigned front, then it could be a useful development for the Cobra.

The extra hardpoint (possibly a class 3) is an interesting addition too.

I would love to have a picture from the MKIII and MKIV standing side by side.
It tells a lot more about size and it is easier to compare.

Not surprised there, it is a new ship and I doubt they're using the same set of uv maps to make textures compatible. For each paintjob they'd need to have separate mk.III and mk.IV textures and then offer both for the price of one for each. Would be nice, of course, but it's really not surprising they're not doing it.

They could give players who preordered horizons a free Mk.IV skin to choose from, I guess. Just a hint for Christmas :)

When is "Holiday 2015" ? Is it my holidays in September to a Greek Island, or my long weekend in the Lake District in October?

Sure, the UVs are different for some parts, but not for 90% of the model by the looks of it. Plus, not only that, but the majority of the skins are extremely simple and, barring the Onionhead and camo ones, would need no additional alterations other than matching the colour of the new elements to the base colour of the rest of the ship. Updating the tactical and vibrant packs would probably take no longer than it takes to paint bucket the correct colour and click save... The £10 Chrome and Wireframe models would also be extremely simple by the looks of it.

I do agree that two separate maps would be required, but the work involved in porting over the Mk. III skins to the IV should be minimal at best IMO and I think it'd be pretty harsh to expect existing owners to pay full price again, particularly for the £10 skins. The Mk. IV is a bit of an oddity too, being itself a limited edition and thus I'm not sure how many paints they might do for it. Another reason why it makes sense to me to update the existing skins for such little effort. The ship should, IMO, also be a significant upgrade from the III and I'd imagine would replace the III for most people, in doing so rendering their expensive skins obsolete. Of course FD may just duplicate the existing skins and then charge full price for them. Some will moan, some won't; the usual story ;). However, knowing that that move is unlikely to go down well, they may choose instead to not update them at all, which would be a shame and leave some of us with pricey redundant skins (assuming of course that the IV's generally speaking the much better ship and if it's not, then what's the point of it as most of the experienced players it's intended for will not give it a second thought at this stage of the game).

I can understand that FD don't want to set a precedent of 'Variant skins are a single purchase,' but I think they need to be pretty careful, particularly regarding the premium £10 ones. I know I want to see my chrome skin on the Mk. IV, but I'd be very hacked off if they sold it again separately for £10. I'd also be somewhat annoyed if they simply didn't update it for the Mk. IV at all; the ship was meant to be a gesture of gratitude for buying Season 1, to then to not allow us to use our expensive paints with it just doesn't make much sense, especially given the ease in which they could be added. Don't put us in the position where we want to pilot the IV, but don't want to because we can't use our favourite skins (which let's face it, we paid way over the odds for). That would just be really frustrating and so easily avoided.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that! Hopefully they'll come up with a decent solution ;).

(Speaking of chrome models; when checking the Cobra paints just now, I noticed that FD have added an £8 Vulture one to the store, not that that one interests me personally but I don't remember it being announced).

Frontier should have done the look of Mk4 with significant differences. To avoid the assimilation, between Mk3 and Mk4
