News Peek of the Week: Cobra Mk IV

Well, you do make some valid points about that ship, but for me, I do feel pressed into an asp if I want more cargo space and I wish I had another option and am really hoping this new cobra does the trick. My other reasons are silly ones. For example (and some will disagree) I cannot get past the boost noises coming out of an asp. It like here I come, wheeeeee bmmmmmmurghhhh bang! I feel like I'm flying a Buick with a bad exhaust pipe, pulling up to school to pick up my kids, who are hiding in the back of the crowd. "Are you with him?". "Uh........no."

Yeah. More options and variants in all ships, as well as any new actual ships should be welcomed. There is a dearth of vessels compared to Frontier: First Encounters especially in the Cobra -> Asp continuum (Harrier, Cobra MK I, Constrictor, Gyr, Harris, Wyvern). As for the Asp's ... erm... flatulence ... it's ... erm ... part of its essential character. [Disclaimer: I'm currently in a trade specced Python. I know I'm a hypocrite. :D]

Lol. I do get the ASP thing, glad you saw the humor in it. I have used an ASP quite a lot actually but after moving on to a python and learning to respect it's combat power I have found myself wanting to return to a cobra in the end. I don't know why, but I simply have the most fun in that ship.....so a variant on that model is very much a welcome from me.

Combat Asp! :)

Thanks for the nice pic!

Personally I really like the look of the Cobra Mk III better but I guess it doesn't matter since you never really see the outside of your ship during game play.

What's the cockpit look like?

Yes I think your right; for those who can't get it, the option should be blanked out. Or no visual UI elements showing it as an option.

Actually I was saying they shouldn't even see it. If they see it but the options to get it are blanked out, they're going to ask why they can't, then demand a way to get it after the fact.

One other thought occurs to me - the MKIV will no doubt still be a mid-range ship (can't imagine it being 20Mil+ even if it is brand spanking new). The MKIII is, what, 400K? So the MKIV will probably be no more than a couple mill maximum.

And it's only going to be available to people who own Elite before Horizons comes out.

How many of those people will still be flying Cobra-level ships?

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm the sort of person who is fully open to starting from Sidewinder (currently only if I die and fail my Pilot Ejection Roll: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=107694 but I'm sure at some point I'll do so just for fun) but it seems to me a LOT of people don't look back once they're in python territory.

Wonder if the Cobra MKIV plus Horizons might get some people to start from Sidewinder ;)

Well it depends on your play style and taste I suppose.
"Cobra level ships" ie those not costing hundreds of millions of credits to equip and maintain are the mainstay of id say the majority of players out there.
I have been playing this game intermittently since Mar and have a DBE worth 12 mil Creds and a few mil in spare change. I have a busy job and I can't afford to dump the time and the effort into making the hundreds of mil to justify not having a "Cobra level ship". Wish I could though.
So for me the Cobra Mk IV is a welcome, affordable addition to my poor mans fleet.
Maybe in a year or two I'll have the money for a Python, maybe not. Fact is small cheap (sub 50 mil credit ships) are what MOST of us fly. And what I hope the majority of us will continue to fly.
Let's see how much she's going to cost. I reackon she's going to be in the same price bracket as the Asp.

Oh.

I was hoping for a design evolution from the old Cobra Mk1 through the Mk3 to something new. But a Mk3 with a few bits stuck in that make it look messy...

Can't see any reason there to pre-order.

Yeah, a pic is nice but I'd really like to see posted specs before I weigh in. I'm all about practicality- the ship can look as great as it wants to, if it's not functional then what's the point in flying it?

A Ferrari 360 Spider looks really nice... but if you have to refill the tank like every 2 blocks then it's not really very practical. :p

I can get the same functionality by hanging a poster on my wall.

Now FD made up their mind and create ship variants. They even alter the models a little bit in order to create visual recognizability...
I don't mind having a Cobra variant. I was complaining (as it seems some others were as well) that it is called Cobra IV. One expects a bigger design difference between III and IV, just like there is between I and III.

Still, that complaint is not a great one. I'll be interested in seeing what sort of a ship this is. And I really look forward to Horizons as well.

People are allowed to express their opinions, the last time I checked.

The problem with this Mk IV is that is looks more like a variant of the Mk III rather than a new ship. Just check how different Cobra Mk I was from Mk III and extrapolate from there.

You know why this is? Have you seen the latest VW Golf? Mk 6 or 7 or whatever. It still bears the basic shape of the original. Why? Because if something works you don't tend to change it that much.

I'll wager £10 that you will need new skins for it.

....reserving judgement until i see how they handle paintjobs for DB Scout and Explorer. Though, i do hope at some point we can customize our ships' paintjobs without spending real money. It'd be fine for those special kind of paintjobs, but those with standard colors (looking at tactical and vibrant painjobs)......i'll bite it.....for now.

edit....or, do it like MWO style, sell unique patterns that only unlock for each chassis type and then sell colors that can be used for all ships.

Having picked up the bare metal Cobra skin for £10 (which I consider an extortionate amount for such a simple paint), I seriously hope not.

Can't see how the existing skins will work without any modification though due to the changes to the mesh, particularly the 'teeth,' but I don't imagine updating the current ones would be anything more than a v. minor job.

She's a thick girl.

I still fly a Viper and I have about four hundred hours in the FDL.

it seems to me a LOT of people don't look back once they're in python territory.

And their piloting suffers for it.

I always go back to weaker ships of similar flight models to the expensive ships I fly, as the skills and tactics used are often directly transferable to the more powerful craft. A lot of them are also fun, and if you break one it's cheap to fix or replace.

Backed the game on KS being an original player back in 84. Got the game sitting in store but never played it yet due to a 2004 PC build still in use.

Do I get this ship or do I need to have played ?

It seems that you WILL get the option to buy this ship (not the ship for free), but that's based on other forum answers. However, if you still haven't played this - as another 84 Elite player, I can only say that upgrading your machine, if only just for this, will be worth it :). There are multiple forum threads on 'ideal' PCs, but a reasonable i3 or better with a good (£100) graphics card will run this just fine.
