News Peek of the Week: Cobra Mk IV

Yeah bought a split new car last year and thought I’d rather play it after a year or so when more stuff was added and most of the bugs fixed etc. If Elite offered me as a backer that has not downloaded his copy the Horizons version for another £10 I’d snap it up. £30-40  seems a bit steep for Horizons when I’ve got a lot to catch up just in space. Getting Horizons would be a distraction if I started with it but hay its always nice to have an expansion.

The plan is to go to Overclockers with a high end ish rig and X52 pro stick order leter this year maybe Dec or early next. Not in a rush. Bought a few games on steam sale so I have a few things to try when I do get it. Only thing I have is a New Asus 27” screen as my Viewsonic gave up the ghost after ten years. But the main Pc built in nov 2004 on XP just keeps going only reading the net etc no games on it now, Think I’m due a upgrade. :D

So I should have the in game option to get this ship, great stuff.

My first thought when seeing the pic of the MkIV was "Oh, it's like a MkIII, only uglier!".

On reflection, there may be a good reason it looks that way. There's not a lot wrong with the MkIII - it's a versatile, affordable ship. So when it's time to replace it with a newer model, how do you improve on a ship that does most things well? From the look of the new model, the answer may have been "Keep things more or less the same, but give it more of everything!"

The bulge in front of the cockpit suggests there may be an extra hardpoint under the nose. Hopefully the positions of the small hardpoints will also have been improved, as their placement wasn't great on the MkIII. The MkIII isn't exactly slow, but the Viper-esque nose shape hints that the new model may be even faster. The MkIV is longer thanks to the new nose, and the back of the craft extends further from the heat exhausts than the previous model. More space for cargo, or for bigger engines? Despite its extra length, it still fits on a small landing pad. The wing section is chunkier than before - again, more space for cargo perhaps? The new winglets suggest improved handling characteristics (well, in an atmosphere at least. I can't see them making much difference in space).

I may prefer the MkIII's more elegant looks, but I suspect that the MkIV will be superior in most other aspects. If that's the case, I'll definitely be wanting one.

@Frobac

Yeah, those are pretty much my thoughts too, particularly regarding the Mk. III's more elegant, cleaner shape. I do hope the IV's a significant step up from the III otherwise I suspect I'll find it a little to limiting in the long run.

Think FD mentioned 'better hardpoint placement and one more hardpoint' at Gamescom. Wonder what size the additional one will be...

Looking forward to seeing some more images of this one. Hopefully there are a few minor adjustments to the 'pit as well.

Whatever the case, it's a Cobra so I'll have it :) I do hope that eventually we get access to mark I and II's, potentially through a used ship market and requiring restoration..

Looks nice to me, really nice. Chunky and solid looking and with the extra hardpoint it's going to be a tough beastie!

I agree it looks good... not fuzzed about the extra hardpoint though... I only ever use medium or large twin gimballed pulse lasers on every ship. This Cobra still has the two hardpoint slots on the nose, which is fine by me. I don't need anything else.

Here's hoping the MK III paintjobs will be compatible, though... That would really make this a special ship.

i'm all for this... i'd like to see a ''super Viper'' or ''Viper mk III'':

-Bigger and slightly different...as it happens with the DB or the Cobra MK IV,
-Improved cockpit design,
-running 2 medium and 2 large Hardpoints,
-3 utility mount
-having the same feeling of the standard Viper: fast but less maneuverable than a Vulture...pretty much a steroid version of the mk II
-short jump range, better hull than the Vulture but poor shields.
-obviusly i'd stay with a medium capacity powerplant...giving players a way to find a good compromise with guns and modules.

I'd like the idea of the multi-weapons fighter...where you have to store missiles, lasers and kinetic mixed, since the Powerpland doesn't allow you to use only lasers...basically a real bounty hunter fighter but multipurpose, since the Vulture doesn't allow you much choices with weapons with just 2 HP.

IMo it would be the Vulture Killer, and i'd stay around 15/25 millions CR....based on how the Cobra Mk IV will costs...i really don't know ATM.

EDIT: This is my idea how it should look:

As you can see in the left there's my concept and in the right the current viper ...is more or less big as a Vulture...but the cockpit and the front part remains more or less the same...in the central and rear part it becomes more big, with different air intakes.

I think it would be enough to justify this variant...anyway i hope you like my little effort and contribution to the thread!

How many of those people will still be flying Cobra-level ships?
[...] but it seems to me a LOT of people don't look back once they're in python territory.

Not true here. I've got a python for quite a while. But most of the time, it's been rotting in the hangar, since I've got my Courier. Now, that's a lot of fun flying with this thing. I look very much forward to the new Cobra. Will buy one immediately.

Ok so this is what I think

Type 5 power plant
Type 5 FSD
4 utility mounts
and maybe be 1 or 2 type 2 internal slots extra
and at a push type 4 power distributor
Anyway that is what I hope

Also I would like to thank Ed Lewis for the streams at gamesconn I know it is his job but they were well presented and enjoyable. I do have a question for Ed though. What ship do you fly in ED?

It looks okay, I was hoping it would have smooth, albeit more ample lines, like the MkIII and those winglets......ugh...

I hope it handles better than the MkIII. I've never liked that ship, it always seems to handle too light and felt flimsy to me.

I like the Mk3. I don't like the Mk4. I have no issue with winglets or teeth or whatever but to me it looks like a very lazy afternoons work pulling a few vertex's out a bit. With the outstanding work done on the other ships in the game I'm really surprised. Variations can be done so much better, take the DB scout and exp. for example. They look very similar but are actually very different models. The Cobra 4 is clearly just the 3 with very untidy additions added on. I was hoping for a more streamlined modern looking Cobra that was a new ship from the ground up.

What we have is the progression below from A to B when I wanted the progression A to C .

Variations really can be made a lot better. There was a competition once on the Oolite forum for people to create variations of the Cobra and the results were pretty great (see under "Pimp my Cobra"):

I would really like the MK IV to have a 30+ ly jump range and good scooping speed if fitted for exploration. Horizons IS an expansion with a strong exploration focus, after all...

If the MK IV is significantly bigger than the III, that bulge on the back could maybe hold a large hardpoint... don't you think?

They just stated that it will have one additional hardpoint, right? Not what size it is?
