News Peek of the Week: Cobra Mk IV

Corners exist on my trip to the shops/work/wherever so I like to go around them! :D

Back to the Cobra 4 - Indeed I love the fins. I think more ships should have them hence my love of evos haha.

I hope that they make it worth flying because I loved my cobra but simply out grew it. Shame.

Don't you guys fear it will be slower than the MK III? That would be a real bummer. I hope they don't make it slower.

To be honest, I think I'd actually like it if it was slower than the Mk III. The Mk III is iconic, and IMO it should keep that speed advantage over other ships. If the Mk IV is bigger, with more potential cargo space and hard points, and therefore heavier, then I'd expect it to be slower.

Having given this some thought I'd half expect it to be somewhere in the 500-750k range, with slightly internal space (either more slots, or bigger slots), slightly better armour, three medium hardpoints, and possibly four utility slots. Nothing too OP, but with enough of a boost to make it a viable upgrade from the Mk III.

Just my two creds.

Makes sense. I half want it to be a ship in the gap between the ASP and the Python though. I fly an ASP but am far too poor (due to limited play time and when I do I don't like to waste it grinding creds) to upgrade to say a Python, FDL or whatever. The credit gap after the ASP/Vulture is massive and I would say needs grinding to overcome. Something thats not rank based priced in the low to mid 20mcr and worth having to turn credits a little faster than an ASP can for that price would be nice. I am very certain that this won't be it though.

Personally, I adore the Cobra (I'm another of those old fart players of the original Elite), so I'm really looking forward to the idea of a Faulcon DeLacy alternative to the Asp or Diamondback Explorer.

If you look at it from a business point of view, Faulcon DeLacy makes nice low-end ships (Sidewinder, Cobra Mk III), but then has a big hole until you hit the Python, over two orders of magnitude more expensive.

Lakon, on the other hand, has the Diamondback Scout (a Cobra competitor at roughly the same price), the Diamondback Explorer (at about 5x the cost of a Cobra, a solid upgrade), and the Asp Explorer (at about 17x the cost of the Cobra). All of which are solid ships. Arguably the Diamondback Scout isn't as good of an all around ship as the Cobra, but the two Explorers are very solid choices that Faulcon DeLacy can't really compete with.

I'd love to see the Cobra Mk IV be something in the general range of the Diamondback Explorer.

Looking at ship stats, a slightly upsized Cobra Mk III starts getting into Fer-de-lance or Viper territory. Both ships are hampered in explorer terms by their class 4 FSD slots. The Diamondback Scout gets a bit of a jump boost by dint of being lighter, but this is clearly a larger ship. My hopes, then, are it'll boast a class 5 FSD and fuel tank, with the flexible Cobra internals to take advantage of that. Something like:

Class 4 Power Plant
Class 4 Thrusters
Class 5 FSD
Class 3 Life Support
Class 4 Power Distributor
Class 3 Sensors
Class 5 fuel tank

Internal: 4/4/4/3/2/2
Hardpoints: M/M/S/S/S
Utility: 2

Assuming a mass in the 250 ton hull range, this would give a 310-320 ton explorer loadout with a 35-37 LY jump range with 7 jumps. That's probably a bit much for a cheap ship, but some tweaking could put it firmly in the 30 LY jump range.

From a game balance point of view, this would be a Cobra with Asp-like legs, but lesser offensive and defensive capabilities. Seems reasonable to me.

How did this thread go from discussing the new Cobra MK IV to reminiscing about classic cars?

Well, I'm the guilty so sorry :p however my point was that design is not static, just because you have one model, it doesn't mean that you can't take it further and still be true to the original design.

The more round Cobra would have been a more natural choice if you ask me :D hence my comment regarding lazy design.

Not true. A rounder cobra say 5 or 6 iterations down the line maybe but as my BMW 3 series evolution pictures showed the steps in between are not so far removed from the previous version. The Cobra 4 would only be mildly revised compared to the Cobra 3.

In other news, I like the BMW i8 actually. I would certainly have one SCB's or not! I suspect the cargo space is on the low side though.
