News Peek of the Week: Cobra Mk IV

Sorry if this has been asked, but how much will this ship be ingame once its out? or is it currently only for the preorder of horizons?

I'm sure this ship will be available for the owners of the Base game (bought before the expansion) and Horizon owners (bought after the base game) like for ever since ships may work the same as a paint/skin does, or previous rewards for the old backers.

For example by pre ordering Mercenary Edition I had a paint-job for the Sidewinder, an Eagle waiting for me in a base with its "Pirate" decals and also a paint-job/decals for the Cobra MkIII which I had to buy with credits. I then sold the Eagle but if I buy it again those decals are going to be there for me. The ship is part of the game so it will be always there of course.

I believe that the Cobra MkIV won't be waiting for you in a base (imagine having to fly 400Ly from where you are now to get it...), it sure will be available to buy with credits at some bases all around since this is managed through your account.

The ones that don't own the "first season" won't see that ship even by pre-ordering the "second season" (Horizons) only. (having in mind that you don't have the game yet which is the "first season")

Also they put this at the store: "For a limited time all existing Elite Dangerous players will receive a £10 loyalty discount plus the exclusive Cobra Mark IV ship when ordering the Elite Dangerous: Horizons through the Frontier Store. Discount will be automatically applied at checkout. Those who take advantage of this offer will be able to purchase the Cobra MkIV in-game when Elite Dangerous: Horizons lands."

It says that you can buy the ship "in-game" so I imagine that if you buy one and then you die or sell it, you will be able to buy it again as any other ship. It won't be part of the game for those who can access to it, but you will see it for sure.

Would be nice is someone at Frontier can say "Yes, you are right Foxiol".

This is killing me.........I'm a complete Cobra fan boy and love pulling the trousers down on bigger ships with the tough old bird so im looking forward to the MK IV but waiting to hear its full specs is driving me mad!!!!!!
Come on FD what size is the extra hard point and where is it located? How are the other hard points now spaced? How many utility slots and internal slots does it have. Whats the trade off over the MK III?

1.5 comes very soon (tm)

;)

Hmm I like that very much. The weapon grouping there is awesome. At first I thought we were seeing 4 Medium and 1 Small hardpoint there but I was looking at the angles all wrong its 3 small and 2 medium. Looks pretty good though.

I'm very excited about this. I've always felt that the Mk.III lacked a bit in the offensive department especially once the Vulture came out... this will change things for sure.

Also has anyone noticed how the new Cobra but also the new Viper and the Keelback seem to be getting a makeover which indicates their role as a planetary landing ship? Look at the Cobra and the Viper, it looks like they got stability enhancements in the form of winglets and rear flaps while the Keelback I hear will be getting swiveling thrusters. Perhaps there will be differences in atmospheric flight between these ships and those who don't have the stability enhancements.

A bit less speed, Ok sure I get that. As long as it can still Boost to just over 400, then it's still a legitimate small ship. But less agility? A cobra with less agility AND less speed is just a slow moving barn. So easy to hit that it might as well be an Asp but with one less hardpoint and a probably half the range. Unless this thing has massive shields like a Courier, it will be fodder for the FAS, FDL, and Clipper.

I'd be happy if the Cobra MK4 had exactly the same specs. and range as the MK3, but with an A4 fuel scoop!:)
.
Edit...mainly because at the moment (with my ranking) it's currently the best all round ship (for my play style) to do trade missions, and combat...with a little bit of exploration too.
You have the superior speed, the range is pretty good, and it's cheap on insurance compared to the bigger ships. The only area it falls down on is that A2 fuel scoop, so if it had the A4 it would be perfect for me personally speaking. :)

The Mk 3 does have an A4 fuel scoop slot. So you should be very happy with the Mk III.
.
True :)...but then I'll lose some of that valuable cargo space! :D. Perhaps I should have said with another extra 'A4' slot.....:)
.
I've been carrying out trade missions for a system way out on the edge of the inhabited zones/bubble, which is paying me a very good income at the moment for legal goods, upward of 500,000 +per mission. I can make around 2 to 3 million cr's per trip per hour on a good day, but I need that 32 ton cargo bay! :)
With an advanced scanner fitted it also nets me a few thousand on the return trip, plus a few bounties when I'm inevitably interdicted with a warrant scanner fitted as well.
Another extra slot to fit an A4 scoop would cut down on the overall time taken to travel to and from the mission destinations. I also like free fuel! :D
Edit...Anyhow, as an experiment I'll try swapping the A2 scoop for the A4 today, and see if it's actually a better set up overall than the one I'm using now. ;)

I admit that I was a little disappointed when Sandro said this. Perhaps to wait for the detailed specifications ?

Yeah it could just be a minor speed decrease. But ANY agility decrease on the Cobra, no matter how minor, is going to make the Mk IV a sitting duck in a turning battle, since it is most vulnerable in the turns due having a HUGE target area on the top and bottom. The only ship that is wider is the T-9. Almost every battle involves some amount of turning, and the Mk III already struggles mightily in turning wars. Even a well flown Fer de Lance can out turn a Cobra Mk III. What will happen to a slower and less agile Mk IV?
