Petition To Allow CMDRs To Join Multiple Squadrons

Elite is a wonderful game that allows you to do many activities across a wide range of space. The addition of new in game social tools is a great step towards bringing us into game from using 3rd party tools.
Many players are actively involved in several pursuits whether its BGS with one faction and Hutton Trucking or Piracy and Fuel Ratting. Doesn't really matter, restricting CMDRs to one faction means that many will still spend 90% of their time arranging social things outside of the game.
I understand that the ship has possible already sailed for 3.3 but please consider if not now then in a future update the addition of being in 2 or even more squadrons at the same time.
The scope for this is endless, you can for example remain in your current group while joining a temporary one for events like DW2 etc etc.
Personally i'm not interested in interguild diplomacy and as its not currently in game i'm not going to focus on the problems caused by being in several squadrons at the same time when diplomacy is in the game.
Be interested to hear those for and against this posting in one place rather than hijacking other threads, if there's enough support maybe we can show FDev this is a feature that the public want them to focus on.

Kaltern's suggestion posted in another thread would be the ideal solution for Leaderboard conflicts:

Problem: Players may wish to join multiple squadrons to take part in various types of gameplay (Ratting at the weekend, PP in the evenings.. etc). Cannot join more than one squadron to do this 'officially'.
Reasons why:
  • Possible abuse of system by allowing multiple players to boost multiple squadrons to gain leaderboard status
  • ... can't think of any more tbh

Solution: Allow players to have a Main Squadron, which is displayed when they're targetted, counted for leaderboard stats and such like. And then allow Sub Squadrons, which are togglable depending on what the player is currently doing, allowing the player to choose their playstyle without affecting ... whatever it might affect. Targetted ships would only show the selected squadron. Perhaps have a 60 min delay between switching active guild.

/thread.

(if only it were so easy :D )

I reckon about every MMO that has been out and had Squadrons/Guilds/whatever they call them, has in fact limited one character to one Guild...etc

So I reckon NO, one character, one squadron and if you want a new one get another account or be prepared to leave your current "Squadron".

Agreed, Most MMOs only have one guild per character but this game is already unlike any other MMO. No other game I've heard of has so many collaborative groups whose purpose have nothing to do with PvP or choosing a side in conflict. How many other games have player groups spanning both sides of the conflict? Most games lock players into a good/evil choice at character creation and don't allow you to help every single other player if they run out of fuel. Or join a group that focuses on science or the love of trucking to distant stars.
FDev had the option to make a game changing guild system and instead have gone down the fairly bog standard off the shelf guild system, its a start and had it been in from the beginning it probably would have been fine but it doesn't represent the unique social scene that already formed in this game organically using 3rd party tools.

+1; I'd like to be part of multiple Squadrons too.

Most combat-oriented squadrons will -likely- want exclusive membership, but most "casual" squadrons won't give a diddly-squat about that.

I like the suggestions of "main" squadron, or "active" squadron.

Along with that, how about another flag when creating squadrons - "exclusive". If set, members can ONLY be part of that squadron.

I'm not against it, but there needs to be a limit, 3 at most or loyalties and game time will be too divided for small squadrons to accomplish anything.

Yeah, I think limit it to the number of professions if possible, so that would be 4 right? :-/

I agree. There are a lot of scenarios where one might want to temporarily join another squadron, such as the DWE expedition or all players on one side of a CG.

I suspect the 80% case is going to be just one or two: your main org (which could be none) and a temporary one that you join for some community activity.

I'd certainly like to be in more than one squadron. The one for the PF I'm a member of, one for mining, I'd like to have one for mobiising a few players for liberating rare goods systems, plus I'd like to join others on a casual basis for the occasional CG.

I'm reasonably ok with only being able to join one squadron but I think we should be able to maybe be an affiliate with other squadrons perhaps, if we can't be members as such.

I expect your squadron will be displayed to other players/NPC's as a means of telling friend from foe. Multiple squadrons would not really work at this. So no thanks.

Agreed.

And for the record to those who say otherwise some other MMO games DO in fact have this. Guild Wars 2 for example where you can be a member of up to 5 guilds but only represent one at any given point.

Agreed OP has a good point, but your cmdrs squadron history needs to be visible to all or something similar.

I don't really see why it needs limiting to 3 or professions. There are more activities to do in game than that.

No.

Choice matters.

One player, one squadron.

Problem is, squadrons solve more than one problem. A squadron is not a traditional MMO guild, it's a C&C infrastructure. That means that you can use it to manage a guild, but you don't have to. It's also why you'd want to belong to more than one at a time, it's like owning a phone for work use and another for personal use (or using the work mode on newer phones).

Agreed, and I'm rather dismayed that this isn't the case. Whatever happened to "blaze your own trail"? Go where you like, do what you like, join whatever causes (yes, plural) you want to support, in any reasonable combination.

One day, access to carriers will probably be linked to squadrons. So a Fuel Rat will never be able to land on Gnosis 2?

Ridiculous! This needs to be fixed.

We don't know it'll work that way, on the other hand a big list of squadrons alongside the CMDR name wouldn't be practical.

Don t forget you will have a tag in game that other people will see.... How many tag do you want when scanned ?

I think it is good as it is.
