Personally I disagree. However, there ought to be a whitelist system in place so that friendly and trustworthy CMDRs (at the squadron leader's discretion) can go in and out of squadrons without the red tape of waiting for applications.
One squadron at a time makes sense. However alliances between squadrons (such as seen on inara) might be a good compromise

I agree with OP. I play with one serious group, and one very casual group, and would like to be in both squadrons. One possible solution when someone is a member of multiple squadrons is to select which one to log in as when we start the game much like we select the open/solo/private mode. If I can't be in more than one squadron, I will probably not bother with any of them.
It's hard enough for some people to have enough activity with one squad, so a big no from me here.
All the guys who want to have multiple squads, you never tried leading a group, have you?
It's a pita to watch your roster and see that your pilots are too busy with RL and a few other groups to be active in your squad when it counts...
You want to do many different things? That's the reason you want multiple squads? Then join a squad that does multiple activities. Easy solution.
Elite is a wonderful game that allows you to do many activities across a wide range of space. The addition of new in game social tools is a great step towards bringing us into game from using 3rd party tools.
Many players are actively involved in several pursuits whether its BGS with one faction and Hutton Trucking or Piracy and Fuel Ratting. Doesn't really matter, restricting CMDRs to one faction means that many will still spend 90% of their time arranging social things outside of the game.
I understand that the ship has possible already sailed for 3.3 but please consider if not now then in a future update the addition of being in 2 or even more squadrons at the same time.
The scope for this is endless, you can for example remain in your current group while joining a temporary one for events like DW2 etc etc.
Personally i'm not interested in interguild diplomacy and as its not currently in game i'm not going to focus on the problems caused by being in several squadrons at the same time when diplomacy is in the game.
Be interested to hear those for and against this posting in one place rather than hijacking other threads, if there's enough support maybe we can show FDev this is a feature that the public want them to focus on.

As I said in the other thread, petition away, but its not likely to change at this point.
A compromise could be have a primary squadron and allow yourself to be affiliated with other squadrons and/or your group to be affiliated with other groups, but it would require both front and back end work, so its something to make as a suggestion, not as a petition.
They could allow multiple squadrons but allow leaders to decide if their squadron is exclusive or not, to prevent sabotage and other annoyances etc.
