Animal #7 - European Badger

Which category does it fit into?
  • Essential for Planet Zoo 2 Base Game
  • Save for PZ2 DLCs/Deluxe
  • Doesn’t need to make it but sure
  • Can be left out entirely
The correct answer is the base game. Now please add the badger to the PZ2 base game roster,.

My Placement for the Badger:
Like most have suggested I put the badger in deluxe/DLC. Its a good European animal however I don't think it needs to be in right away. I do think we need EU rep in the base game but I think using animals like the lynx, wisent and boar fit the job better.

OOH This is a very tricky choice

On one hand the average person is probably not aware of bonobos and plenty of people will just use chimps instead. Not sure how much excitement would be generated by their presence in a DLC pack either... However, they're a very interesting species that I think deserves to be highlighted in the game, for the sake of sheer animal diversity if nothing else. So for my 'official' answer, I'll say save the Bonobo for DLC... but it could also work as an anniversary update animal if they continue that tradition in a PZ sequel?

Hot take, but save for DLC. In general I like having options. If I don’t want to use an ostrich, but I want a ratite, I have the emu and cassowary. If I want a rhino I have three options.

Now if I don’t want a chimpanzee, I have the bonobo. Still to me the bonobo is not essential enough to be base game material (especially with the lack of birds). I think saving it for a rainforest or even primate type dlc might be great though.

You are allowed to say it can be left out and switched out for another subspecies btw :)
Just remembering this caveat, so with that I'll make some replacements based on tangents from some animals:
The markhor is quite tricky for me the pin down for me personally. In a vacuum, it's a great roster choice. But with alpine goats and alpine ibexes, that's a lot of Capra for one roster. So my sentiment is thus:
  • Markhors are good for the base game, as they're the only present Capra species that's Asian
  • Alpine goats should also stay, domesticated animals are great for a zoo game
  • Alpine ibexes are thus left as the weakest thread and therefore the most expendable IMO
I like bonobos more than chimpanzees. I’ll consider the former essential and the latter unessential (can be left out)
  • Alpine Ibex -> Alpine Chamois
  • Western Chimpanzee -> Blue Monkey

Animal #8 - Bonobo
I would put this one in 'can be left out entirely'. The model is very nice, so I wouldn't mind if it showed up, but I remember being pretty disappointed with its inclusion in the base game. Like the HBB and Aldabra tortoise, it seemed to only serve to pad out the roster. I don't hate it, so it maybe could fit in 'doesn't need to make it but sure', but it's one of the animals I'd miss the least.

Torn between can be left out entirely and doesn't need to make it but sure, I legitimately forget it's even in the game but its model is... fine I guess? While it's nice to have variety, the bonobo really only differs from the chimp in some slight visuals - unless they decide to expand on some social structure systems it's virtually the same animal in-game (same region, same biome, same behaviors, only slight difference is some group sizing, etc). Aside from some super visually distinct animals like the lemurs, when I want variety I usually mean things like having two different flamingos from two different continents and/or with different climate suitability, not what is pretty much the same animal with a different coat of paint (again, in-game. I know how distinct they are IRL).

I think I'll go with can be left out entirely: because otherwise, I know it's just gonna be a certain lonely brown bear sitting down there lol.

That was exclusively for the sheep since I know a lot of people wanted petting zoo animals in but not the specific subspecies they chose. Doesn’t apply to everything else.
