Planet Zoo 2 Speculation and ideas

Question to all. Say you design the base game roster of PZ2 with a 100 habitat animals, you can only add up to 10 new habitat species, and port the rest habitat animals from PZ to PZ2 basegame. Which 100 animals do you pick for the PZ2 base game?

Assume if it's an older model from PZ it gets updated to the current model standard.
Here is my take (including deluxe edition, if that does not count then add Anteater and Cassowary to base game in exchange for the Moose and African Penguin), I tried to do it how frontier would so I had certain animals (like the pigs) have more then one species base game, with that said replace the barbirusa with teh Baboon sense there are are already 3 pigs here.
my-image.png

assuming we get most of the other through free updates or as anniversary gifts this would be a good roster, for the other ten

SA Coati
Geoffrey's Spider Monkey
Squirrel Monkey
Patagonian Mara
Greater Rhea
White-Faced Whistling Duck

Australian Pelican
Arura River Turtle
Helmeted Guinea Fowl
Radiated Tortoise

If flying birds and fully aquatics also count as the "other ten" for the pack then replace the underlined animals with

Arapaima
Manatee
Scarlet Macaw
Golden Eagle
Toco Tocan
Eurasian Eagle Owl

I shouldn't say this myself but I think it's pretty obvious that the meta-wishlist has indeed heavily influenced animal picks in the DLCs.

If there was one thing I hated about the state of the forum on the months before PZ released and the year after is that literally every user would post their random animal wishlist in random threads, making them completely sterile. So yes, a meta-wishlist for PZ2 is something very needed if you ask me.

Am I the right person to host it and keep it updated? Hell no, sorry. As one gets older, life and work commitments take over more and more time (blame academia I guess).
In fact, I think it shouldn't be a personal project but more so a collaborative one, as it's a very demanding task. Especially because I reckon an initial meta-wishlist would ask for 150 base-game animals? Somewhere around that amount.
Perhaps some sort of polling system would be an option, but I don't think any poll would allow that level of flexibility. Cause how many animals would you include? It would be sensible to include flying birds and aquatic animals for this one, I guess, so: 1000? That would probably not be enough and wouldn't be convenient either.
You've been amazing, and thanks for all of your hard work! I'd be happy to help with a wishlist project for PZ2, but I want to be sure this will be the last DLC first. I still think there is a decent chance that they're just celebrating the fifth anniversary.

If we’re doing a meta wishlist again for the sequel it needs to be ASAP the sequel is being worked on as we speak
TBH, we should do it now, and with potentional Aquatics and Flyers.

For me, a sequel only works with fish and birds. (Scaling and a new path system are not enough.) There is no reason to remove them from potential wish lists. I am almost 100% sure that we would have had more birds if they had been allowed on the lists.

I am also happy to help work on the lists so that not just one person has to do all the work.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure they already planned the base game animals + 1 year of DLC support in advance. I see no reason to start a Meta Wishlist for animals now. Features, yes, animals, no. They probably took in game data to messure popularity.

A Meta wishlist makes sense right after we know the base game roster.

And you definately should take the credit for helping the community get the animals they really wanted. The Metawishlist saved us and provided us with a great long term plan.

@yoav_r sorry in advance as it is not my intention to derail this thread, which I think is very useful and has its own purpose.
But for the sake of keeping things organised with regards to a potential meta-wishlist for PZ2, I'll use this post to try and get a hold of what could be done. Private conversations only allow 6 participants in total so that is an issue, but perhaps a different thread could be opened to discuss all this.

@yoav_r @SuzieSky @SpookDoc @Fini @DarthQuell @ReptoMin @Spiderhawk @Stygi @Milurian : You've all either shown interest or have already run a meta-wishlist of some sort. Should we start a new thread specifically to discuss how to approach this, see if more people are interested to collaborate and how tasks could be split? I think it’s a massive project that requires lots of thinking and lots of questions to answer before it even starts.

@Swjosdotschka Thanks again for your words.
See? What you bring up here is one of the things that could be discussed and I honestly see no clear answer.

When would it make sense to start a new meta-wishlist? While I tend to agree with you on the fact that probably many of the base-game animals for PZ2 are already planned, I think 2 whole years (if not 3?) allow for a lot of changes. If a meta-wishlist for PZ2 was started now, I'm pretty certain it would have some degree of influence on what animals would be prioritised. But let's be blunt: just like they’ve done with PZ, many of the most requested are bound to end up in paid DLC. Also, with no clear indication of how many animals would there be, how habitats, exhibits, aquariums (if happening) or aviaries (if happening) would work, it’d be hard to estimate what direction to take when making the list. Could it encompass the whole animal kingdom to cover all the above systems? Okay, how demanding and tricky would it be to keep track of everything and keep things organised? We all know the answer.

I am very happy to help as well, I reckon we should make a separate thread so we can get more input than just 6 people

Even though it is alot I think planet zoo 2 will contain 99% of Pz1s roster from the start and all of it by the end. Jurassic world evolution 2 had almost all the animals from the 1st game in the base game and its deluxe version with only a few very themed exceptions the hybrids which came in a separate dlc later. Planet coaster 2 by the looks of it is containing a majority of the coasters with the exceptions being brand deal rides and ones that only changed carts.

I would love to collaborate on this as well and im currently running the list of animals people have seen which may be useful data to steer the conversation.

The selling point
mammals not currently in the game.
There are very few mammals not already in the game that the wider audience is really going to care about, which is why Frontier has dragged their feet on getting so many obvious zoo animals into the game (such as a baboon) and why they so often pick animals affiliated with semi-popular memes (such as the sand cat or Pallas cat or fennec fox or quokka).

Bob Average isn't going to buy Planet Zoo 2 because it has the Père David's deer, to pick a random example. He's looking for instantly recognisable key species, most of which will already be there; elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, big cats, bears, possibly penguins and seals, and then, naturally, the macaws and other parrots, birds of prey, maybe colourful fish or sharks. Frontier's challenge has always been balancing precariously between animals that sell to a wide audience, animals that are common enough in captivity to warrant inclusion, and animals that their core fanbase has requested.

Definitely in a separate thread, the project would go beyond the scope and meaning here. There we can also discuss in peace how we want to divide up such a list.I also think we should start with it in the near future. By the time PZ2 is released it will probably be too late to really have an "influence on Frontier's decisions". <- we don't really have that, but I'm sure that they have the community's wishes in mind and are responding to them. The meta list influenced many of their decisions.
I'm certainly not the best person to moderate a thread like this, it takes me ages to read English texts. But I have a great passion for lists and tables.

Can't wait for the 5 birds and aquatic animals we get in the base game and all the iconic ones to be locked behind dlc for another 2 years.
That’s generally one of my fears that makes me a little hesitant, I don’t want to wait even longer for some basics. Obviously it is all depending on the starting roster.

With that being said if I have to wait 3 years for a sequel, and then potentially another 5 to possibly not even get a duck? I’m gonna be very salty.

I think ive said this before but in my opinion that best way to go about the PZ2 animal roster would be to keep everything of the last few years and put it into the basegame. gauging by PC2 there wont be a big difference in graphics or artstyle so cutting the animals that already look as good as the gonna be would just be cutting for cuttings sake.
Then round up the animals from the basegame that you just physically cant have a zoogame without like elephant, giraffe, lion and so on, remaster them and also put them in the basegame.
Then id keep some of the "secondary" star animals from the basegame and earlier DLC that need a remaster anyways out and use them to build new DLCs around.
So a Polar Pack with Polar bear, walrus, snowy owl and beluga for example. Or a rainforest animal pack with Orang, Macaw, guereza, Coati and stuff

I would assume most animals will need at least some type of remaster, and I'm sure if they want to fiddle with some of the other aspects of animals - like hitboxes or behaviors for example - would also require a lot work on individual animals. That's a LOT of work to do for 200 animals...and speaking for myself, I'd much rather have 100 animals that have been re-worked and improved, both in appearance and behavior, than 200 with only minimal improvements.
