In my opinion, the main challenge for a Planet Zoo 2 is to clarify and rebalance the game between construction and animal simulation. Personally, I am more of a builder profile, but I can see in my acquaintances playing the game that what has put them off is the lack of new features in terms of animal mechanics and keeper gameplay.
Besides major new developments like aviaries or possible aquariums, it seems to me that a rethinking of animal behavior would be a real revolution and that we need it.
Here is a list of some behaviors that would enrich the animal simulation aspect of the game:
- Herd behavior
- Mother/baby behavior
- Stereotypic behavior in an unsuitable environment
- More realistic activity (animals known for sleeping for long periods should be less active, others known for spending their day eating should eat more, those known for spending a lot of time perched should be on the ground less often, etc.)
- Etc...
To this I would add a major novelty in terms of realistic simulation, in the relationship between keeper and species. The idea would be to introduce species-specific facilities and that the keepers cannot, for example, enter a tiger's or elephant's enclosure. It seems to me that we must therefore find a new mechanism to introduce more realistic backstage areas. With secure night enclosures adapted to the different species. These could be customizable modules maybe.
This would add in terms of simulation the notion of safety of visitors, animals
and keepers .
That being said, this means that it is difficult to get the entire PZ1 roster at the launch of PZ2. Because all the animals we have would require a huge update in terms of animations.
For a few weeks now I've been wondering if we shouldn't have a new DLC strategy, more recurrent (every two months maximum) including free content (PZ1 animals remastered for PZ2 mechanics and PZ1 props) and new PZ2 species.
This could work with a clear road map and why not accompany the gameplay in the game. Indeed, in this perspective of better addressing the career and franchise gameplay, this could be more linked to the sandbox content. With a free and incremental unlock of PZ1 elements, we could imagine a career mode where we start with a small zoo with aviaries and small animals, and two months later, our efforts as a zookeeper give us access to a new category of species and two months after that, even others...
This could force manufacturers to play more in simulation mode to unlock animals and scenery for their sandbox game and thus rebalance the game and its community which I have always found very divided between the two player profiles.
