Planet Zoo 2 Speculation and ideas

As for the Barnyard discussion, yea some breed choices were weird. Goat should have been African Dwarf, Pig should have been Pot-Belly, Sheep should probably have been Cameroon...

The only actual breed choice that made sense was the Highland Cattle, which was by far the most popular pick. Alpaca doesn't really have breeds and the other two are basically the generic ones which were the ideal choice anyway (though I wish the chicken had some more variants).

or they scaled back ambitions from the base game and revisited the idea of an exhibit turtle later on with some down-sizing
We know that this actually happened due to a number of scrapped species. We also know that originally DLCs were supposed to have 2 exhibit animals each and the second animal for the australia DLC already had scenery made for it (likely screwed by covid), that there were supposed to be 4 dlcs in the first year (screwed by covid), and that the aquatic pack was planned from before launch (volumetic water)

Alpaca doesn't really have breeds
There are two main breeds of alpaca, the suri and huacaya. Thankfully they were actually one of the few barnyard animals Frontier made a sensible breed choice for as we got the huacaya alpaca (even if it is just called "alpaca" in-game), which is by far the most common of the two.

Two exhibits per pack would have helped so much, fly high Lord Howe Island Stick Insect.

How many animals do we know that were scrapped?

You know there are so many packs where they put an ungulate where another animal could better have used the spot, but then the ungulates they put are so good I don't want them gone. The Nile Lechwe and Water Buffalo are some of my most used animals.
The thing that is so annoying about the ungulate situation is how similar they all are, an insane amount of African antelope, 3 caprines in a row, 4 pigs in a year, only 1 Asian antelope with no zoo presence, no small deer, no small bovines

The 3 that come to mind made it in (some in the last moment). Peccary, Capybara, Alligator, Dikdik and Baboon.
When was the capybara scrapped? Also I don't believe there's any evidence for the latter 3 beyond that musing of one article (which may not have reflected the true roster)

I've made a thread about the animals of PZ and PZ2, more specifically who should rly be in the headlines to return immediately or as DLC, and I'm working on a tier list of how good they are in regards to visuals (model, animation, texture, etc.)

I was originally going to say non-avian reptiles too, but a lot of them would be better suited for exhibits. I think tegus could work as habitat animals, but that's pretty much just it since iguanas have been arbitrarily relegated to exhibit species. We have a wide variety of existing habitat reptiles, with pretty much the only weak spot being South America (which is deliberately excluded from the question).
I think even counting habitats there was some very big gaps (african crocs and australian monitors) and some minor ones (no tortoises for NA and Asia) in the game.

But yeah, i think the biggest problem right now is exhibit, and i realized this after thinking for animals to African tropical reptile house and realizing that my options for exhibits varies to nothing from nothing.

If you could bring the exhibit species up to 2 in every DLC, what would you add?
No DLCs that didn't have any exhibit animals:
South America: Ornate Horned Frog
Australia: Frilled Lizard
Aquatic: Alligator Snapping Turtle
South-East Asia: Reticulated Python
Africa: Panther Chameleon
North America: Plumed Basilisk
Europe: Common Adder (not really sure what to put for this one)
Wetlands: Green Anaconda
Conservation: Chinese Crocodile Lizard
Twilight: Tokay Gecko
Grasslands: King Cobra
Tropical: Emerald Tree Boa
Arid: African Rock Python
Oceania: Tuatara
Eurasia: Chinese Giant Salamander

This is just of the top of my head, so would probably be different if I sat down and thought about it for a while, but I like all these animals and am disappointed they didn't make it in to the game at some point.

I'm confident in thinking the only tortoise from those continents that would be a habitat animal are the Asian forest tortoise and maybe the Bolson tortoise. The rest probably would've been exhibit animals like the Hermann's tortoise.
I think it's very pointless to drawn a line on what tortoise would be exhibit and habitat, considering that our only metric is the three biggest tortoise and a really small one. Also not like the Bolson tortoise and Asian forest tortoise wouldn't be great picks.
