Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack Releasing 20 June 🐪

Sounds like Nanger dama has a clinal coat pattern, rather than falling into 3 clearly distinct subspecies. But seeing coat patterns are eyegrabbing, hairsplitting runs rampant.

Hayo Zookeepers!

Things are heating up in Planet Zoo with the new Planet Zoo: Arid Animal Pack, coming to a Steam Store near you on 20 June alongside Free Update 1.14!

Under the harsh heat of the desert, life still arises and persists. Look out over the dunes and through the sands to discover some miraculous creatures who have adapted to the difficult conditions of these scorching lands.

Be on the lookout for a Dromedary Camel wandering across the desert, while the elegant Addax and Dama Gazelle hunt for edible shrubs, grasses and leaves to snack on. Peer a little closer to the ground and you might catch a glimpse of the prickly African Crested Porcupine, or the shy and elusive Sand Cat. The Black Rhino can also be found munching on leafy plants, branches and fruit, while the well-adapted Somali Wild Ass rests in the shade to get some refuge from the scorching sun. Rounding out the cast is the sleek and impressive Desert Horned Viper, our Exhibit animal for this pack.

The Arid Animal Pack is a celebration of the fauna living in the arid lands, with 8 impressive animals that all have ways to overcome the hardships of the heat.

Dama Gazelle - Arid Animal Pack!🏜️

- Look at this beautiful Antelope! I know it's not the most exciting animal in the pack, personally! but it looks GORGEOUS! also look at the baby! it looks freaking adorable!
very stunning, i swear frontier outdoes themselves every dlc, the diffrence in quality compared to basegame is insane.

Hello! The Dama Gazelle in the Arid Animal Pack is the N. d. ruficollis, Addra Gazelle subspecies! Hope that helps :)
What will it be called in the game? There is some inconsistency in how Subspecies names are handled in Planet Zoo. Considering it is not a simple case of "Northern" or "Southern" Dama Gazelle, I hope it will be called Addra Gazelle, otherwise it will be a little misleading to call it the Dama Gazelle. Apart from the obvious Physical Appearance question.

I wish instead of West African Lion, the species we have was just relabelled to Northern Lion. Then we could build Asiatic themed exhibits and North African themed, as well as West African.
Just Lion is actually even better. The Lion in the game is generic and stylistic enough to be called Lion.

The Somali wild ass, black rhino and crested porcupine all don't live in the Sahara. I know it's tempting to call all of Africa north of the rainforests Sahara, but that's not doing justice to the diversity of the environment. 'North Africa' would be similarly inaccurate as the Horn of Africa is generally considered East Africa (along with most of what's east of the Rift) so this would - again - not cover the ass.

I also don't think 'Arid Animal DLC' is the best choice, but 'Sahara' or 'North Africa' are not better alternatives. Although Frontier took some liberty in defining their regions before with the red-eyed tree frog (and this arguably can be found in a teeny tiny part of South America), I think it's preferable to stick to generally agreed definitions.
They could have gone with Arid Africa Pack but if this is the last year, doing a specific climate type of a single continent would have people expecting tropical South America and what not in the future. Arid is a better name than "Sahara" and "North Africa" but a still wished the went for a name that doesn't sound as inclusive as using a climate type for the name

It looks very beautiful. Nice that we see one picture of an animal we have not seen already at first. Hope they have different color variations. I know there are different subspecies but at least according to the German Wikipedia Page a subdivison into different subspecies is not really valid by Molecular genetics.

Yeah, the 3 classical subspecies are more of a grade, coat changes as you go from west to east, but, as the animal lost most of its habitat and its populations were fragmented, 3 subspecies were erected according to coats. Honestly, having all 3 main coat patterns as skins would be great.

Love the gazelle. I can't remember what zoo it was (St Louis, perhaps?) but there was a photo of a dama gazelle in an enclosure with a grey crowned crane and ever since then I've wanted to build for them. My local zoo used to keep them, too, but their last one died some time ago.

One Thing I thought about because I assume Frontier won't add the Subspecies as separate Animals for some Reason (Don't know though where that Mhorr Gazelle Variation Claim came from) would be to have them as Variants but there's a 0% Chance to breed a Mhorr Gazelle from a Addra Gazelle but increase how common they are on the Market. Not my favorite Solution but definitely better than a different Subspecies randomly being born. A Shame though that with a Solution like that, the Mhorr Gazelle would have the wrong Conservation Status in the Zoopedia because unlike the other two, it is extinct in the Wild. But hey, we also got multiple properly implemented Butterfly Species, so there's at least a small Chance for them properly implementing it

But they can breed irl. Subspecies can breed with each other

Yeah, protecting all populations of any given species is a thing that has to be enforced, but, those used to have a continuous range, and artificially isolating them is not productive either.
