Planetary tech 6.0

Hey CMDRS !

I've made a video compilation of a few planets I visited in the past few days in Odyssey. I'm showing them from space, on approach and in the SRV or on foot. Went for the cinematic style so it's less boring to watch :alien:

I initially shared this video in a topic comparing Horzion VS Odyssey planetary tech but I think it would be interesting to share it here for people wondering what is the actual state of exploration in Odyssey and what it looks like.

I didn't cherry picked planets, I focused on diversity and didn't bother if they had an atmosphere or not. My process was to jump in a system, scan it, select a planet different from the previous one, arrive and decide on the go where to land and film during the process. This was filmed during 3 gaming sessions (around 25 systems explored - some of them having only stars or non-landable planets).

Main problems I encountered while filming :

  • LOD issues
  • terrain morphing
  • terrain too "roundish"
  • shadow shimmering
  • weird lightning behaviors changing the color of ground & sky
  • other lightning issues
  • "plastic" textures feeling out of place
  • terrain changing of color a few meter from touchdown

That being said, I'm rather impressed with where the planetary tech is heading right now and can't wait to see how it'll evolve in the future. Exploration for me is way funnier and exciting now than it was in Horizon.

My system : RTX 2060 AMD - Ryzen 3700X - 32Go RAM - Game on SSD - Playing on ULTRA settings (and ULTRA+ TQ).

Very nicely made video.

The terrain looks great in some places, and odd in others. Still, I believe Frontier are still working on it.

Nicely done!

One of the things it also captures is something that I consider to be one of the bigger problems in their new rendering system. There's a lot of "judder" when flying over a planet's surface. That is, every second or third frame takes longer to render than the adjacent frames, so even when the overall frame rate is good, it doesn't look smooth. I don't know if it's texture loading/manipulating, or what, but they have something that doesn't do an equal amount of work during each frame.

In the case of this video it's the recording process that added the "judder". Even while filming I didn't had it but when watching the videos before processing them it was there. Not saying that EDO performance are smooth but if I have judder in game I don't even see it, it's really the recording that added it for some reasons =)
