Title: Canonn Scientists Experiment with Rare Items
Date: As soon as you can/want ;)
Location: Global! (But if not - Varati, Nganji and Alpha Centauri)
Description:

Hans Terhardt, Voice of Varati correspondent, interviews Canonn researcher Prof. Del Monte on the latest from Bond Hub:

'Our research into the station malfunctions is progressing well and, although we're still not sure about the cause, we are now able to measure their rate of change.

In addition, we've now added almost every known rare commodity, plus items such as Occupied Cryopods, AI Relics, Hafnium, and more, to our experiments. Our hope is to repeat the Heike Tea Cerberus Plague cure breakthrough by analysing whether any of these items inhibits or reverses the station degradation. We are aware that none of these items has been found to stop the damage received by a ship carrying a UA, but a station is infinitely more complex than a ship, so we feel it's worth pursuing.

My colleague, Prof Outspan, has already been able to rule out a few since we started. One example is the Hutton Mug, which is known to get cold in the presence of a UA. This had no beneficial effect whatsoever, except to help supply the team with delicious, hot, caffeinated beverages - which has significantly improved our work rate.

We will not stop until we have established the link between the station faults and the UAs, and then found a way to stop them, and we thank all CMDRs for their continued support.'

TITLE: Prism Patron and Family Held Hostage

DESCRIPTION:
Eurig Mawr, head of the Cartel of Sardandi, recently demanded one billion credits for the return of a patron from the Prism system. The Cartel of Sardandi released a brief recording in which Patron Zyair pleaded for the Empire to come to the aid of his family.

Patron Zyair, loyal to absentee Prism Senator Kahina Loren, was last heard from when he departed Chione on 25 November for a family holiday in the Aymifa system.

In a press conference held at the Imperial Palace on Chione, Ambassador Cuthrick Delaney, acting administrator of Prism in the absence of Senator Loren, expounded upon the nature of the situation.

“Eurig Mawr is well acquainted with the Empire’s no-ransom policy. He has already pivoted to demanding that recently introduced Imperial security forces, Loren’s Legion, withdraw from Sardandi. It seems we are cutting into the Cartel’s profits. Negotiations for Zyair’s release are underway."

TITLE: An Interstellar Plague?

DESCRIPTION:

According to rumours, an interstellar ecological disaster is slowly but surely happening without anyone noticing.

Several unconfirmed sighting of something described as "thin monochrome bands", and the rumours suggest that it is either a fast growing plant or a slow moving animal of some kind. All reports agree, however, that it seems to be moving.

Is this the start of a new interstellar plague? Are we facing a new Cerberus plague, something far more sinister, or is this simply the typical conspiracy theories that run rampant in certain parts of the net? Only time will tell.

TITLE: SAGITTARIUS A* - 1ST ANNIVERSARY OF CMDR ZULU ROMEO ARRIVAL.

DESCRIPTION:

On December 1st, 3300, CMDR Zulu Romeo reached the Super Massive Black Hole Sagittarius A* System, 25,900 ly from SOL.

Dubbed Sag A*, this black hole sits at the center of our Galaxy and keeps the core and everything around it, in line and orbiting.

CMDR Zulu Romeo persistence during his intrepid trip, opened the possibilities for all other explorers in the bubble, to reach out, further and beyond than anyone else would have dared before. This inspired a whole generation of explorers in Elite that have crisscrossed the Galaxy ever since, from one edge to the other, defining the endurance, determination and scientific knowledge that we explorers are famous for.

Ever since then, almost a thousand commanders have been registered in visiting Sag A*, knowing that "someone did it", they all left the bubble with the goal of reaching one of the greatest achievements in exploration today. And let's not forget the many events that have elapsed involving Sag A* during this year: from the Buckyball Race, started by ElectricZ to the shooters incident that led CMDR Anuranium, CMDR Metta and many others to create a permanent watch and be the Guardians of Sag A*! Most of long range explorations nowadays make Sag A* a "must visit" destination.

Congratulations CMDR Zulu Romeo!! And may this amazing achievement keep inspiring many pilots across the civilization bubble in following your FSD jumps, all the way to the Galactic core, for many more years to come!

Title:
Alliance Office of Statistics recommends quarantine

Description:

In response to the spreading plague of technological malfunctions, which is disrupting services at an increasing number of stations, the Alliance Office of Statistics has recommended the institution of a limited quarantine.

The recommendation suggests a quarantine of infected areas that see particularly heavy traffic, which include prime outfitting locations such as Lembava and Diaguandri, as well as the Felicia Winters headquarters of Rhea.

When asked if such a drastic response is really needed, Vectron, senior statistician at the Alliance Office of Statistics, responded as follows:

“Yes, I do believe it is warranted. With the Cerberus Plague, we quickly concluded that it spread through trade routes. Here it seems to be high traffic systems at risk. We could be mistaken of course, but I’d rather be safe and proven wrong than sorry with the lights out.”

The office of prime minister Mahon has not yet commented on the recommendation.

I'm submitting this short story I wrote to be published on GalNet. Due to its length, I understand that it may not be practical to publish it in whole. I was hoping this might be posted in parts at least. Also, I understand this story might be impractical to be posted on GalNet globally due to having to translate it into other languages. So I'm just posting this story here, and if this story can't be published at all, I understand and no hard feelings :) Just thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks!

Title: Investigation into the Knights of the Black and the UA

Location: Sol, Achenar, Alioth

Part 1

As a young journalist I’ve been craving the opportunity to crack open that first big story and expose it to the universe. After years of studying and hard work, I was finally hired on with GalNet where I knew I’d have such an opportunity. My first assignment was unbelievable; investigate the Unknown Artefacts with a group of fresh-faced, xenophobic explorers and self-proclaimed guardians of all humanity, The Knights of the Black.

The Knights haven’t publicly said much about their goals and ambitions. When they have spoken, it’s always something implicating unknown alien species as plotting against humankind. Whether it’s the disappearance of President Halsey’s ship or the Unknown Artefacts, aliens are somehow always involved with malevolent intentions.

And so I set out to meet one of the Knights at Weyn Dock in 64 Arietis, on the outskirts of colonized space. Its location was perfect as a base of operations for anyone studying the Unknown Artefacts. Just a few dozen lightyears away was Aries Dark Region GW-W d1-52, a system famous for its abundant discoveries of the UAs.

I met up with the Knight near his ship’s landing pad. Commander X (whose true identity will remain hidden per his request) greeted me with a firm handshake and a smile.

“You ready to hunt some aliens,” he asked enthusiastically.

“Um, yeah,” I replied, put off by his certainty that the UAs are alien in origin.

Within a few minutes we took our seats in the cockpit of Commander X’s Cobra and disembarked. After a few jumps through the thick, billowy clouds of Witchspace, we arrived at our destination. GW-W d1-52 is itself a rather unimpressive and empty system; just one star and nothing else.

After a couple of minutes coasting along at minimum supercruise speed, I asked Commander X how long we’d have to wait to find a UA.

“Not as long as you’d think,” he said. “Sometimes it can take a few minutes, but it won’t be long.”

Part 2

Sure enough, a couple of minutes later a strong signal source appeared just a few hundred kilometers ahead of us. I didn’t get too excited yet, knowing the signal source could just be a typical type of ship I’ve seen a million times before.

We dropped out of supercruise and only one thing appeared on radar; a white rectangle. Commander X saw it in his ship’s Contacts list and locked on.

“Is that a UA,” I asked.

“See for yourself.”

He pointed his Cobra in the direction of the object and approached slowly. First it appeared as a faintly lit, tiny, oblong, hazy point against the backdrop of black space. Eventually, a bright point became visible at the center of that haze, with what appeared to be blue and purple sparkles of light emanating from it in waveform. Then, I could hear a deep, calm purr, sounding more like one of Earth’s big cats than a mysterious, space faring object. Immediately following the purr there were a series of groaning noises, loud and chilling like the bending and twisting of a ship’s metal frame under pressure. It’s a sound you never want to hear in a spaceship.

Gradually the groaning tapered off, and the purrs would intermittently return, sometimes with a series fast clicking or tapping sounds. But the only noise that remained constant was a low gurgling. I could swear it was trying to talk to me, trying to tell me something, like it was whispering a message in my ear so silently I couldn’t make out the words. I finally understood much of the speculation and excitement surrounding these artefacts.

As we got closer, I became more afraid. I wanted to tell Commander X to turn around and leave. But I couldn’t back away from my first GalNet assignment. I had to keep my fear under control.

Part 3

Commander X got us as close as possible. It was floating just meters from my face with nothing but a glass canopy protecting me. The UA was certainly the oddest thing I’ve ever seen. At one end was a bulbous, head-like region. Its exterior seemed to have the dull texture and color of bone, with thinner, round, transparent spots on opposite sides revealing a bluish, fluorescent liquid lazily spinning inside. What appeared to be a thick spinal column protruded from the head region. Instead of limbs and a body, this object’s spinal column had cylindrical canisters attached in four rows of four along its sides. The canisters were the most synthetic looking parts of the artefact, definitely giving credence to the idea that the UAs are intelligently designed pieces of technology.

The UA was absolutely hypnotizing. Before too long, though, my fear had gotten the better of me. I was ready to go.

“Let’s return to the station,” I told him.

“Okay, let me just scoop this thing up and we’ll leave.

“Scoop it,” I excitedly asked. “Aren’t these things toxic?”

“Yeah, they’re toxic, but the UA will be safely secured in the cargo hold. The only harm will be to my ship’s modules.”

“Can’t we leave it here just this once?”

Commander X laughed and said, “Leave it? Are you kidding me? These things are worth around a quarter million credits right now.”

I knew I couldn’t talk him out of that many credits. All I could do was hope that the commander knew what he was doing. If not, we’d either end up dead or arrested for transporting illegal goods. Risk is a part of my job, though. I pretty much asked for it.

Mere seconds after scooping the UA the ship’s computer alerted us that a module had corrosion damage. It was only 2% damage, so I didn’t freak out too badly. By the time we returned to Weyn Dock only two other modules had minor damage. But there was one big problem.

Part 4

Commander X got within 7.5km of the station and began sending transmissions asking for permission to dock. After trying four times, he hailed the station.

“Weyn Dock, this is the SS Blood Eagle. Do you receive?

Garbled and butchered with static, a voice came through, “SS… Eagle… malfunct... thing... ere... fatalities...”

“Weyn Dock, we can barely make you out. Say again.”

A bit clearer this time but still with some static, we heard, “SS Blood Eagle, we are experiencing malfunctions across the station. Nothing to worry about. No fatalities have been reported. Copy?”

Commander X replied, “Copied. I can’t get permission to dock from the automated system.”

“We know. I’m approving your request to dock manually.”

We received permission and proceeded to our landing pad.

“What’s going on,” I asked Commander X.

“There have been reports of a handful of stations experiencing malfunctions for several days now. No one knows what’s causing the problems yet.”

“Could it be due to the UAs?”

He smirked and answered, “I suppose it’s possible.”

Smuggling the UA into the station was far easier than it should have been. We weren’t scanned at any point, and all without the aid of silent running or a heat sink to hide the ship from the radars of system security.

I spoke briefly to the commander in a dimly lit bar after he sold off his UA on the black market. I asked Commander X if the Knights were convinced the UAs were an alien technology and why.

He explained, “Officially, the Knights of the Black have not made a final conclusion. Unofficially, most of the Knights, including our founder, do believe the UAs are some type of alien technology. Of course we can’t prove it yet, but we think it’s only a matter of time before that concern is validated with proof.”

I then asked, “What about President Halsey’s disappearance? Have you turned up anything? Have you given up?”

“I think the majority of the Knights are in agreement that the StarShip One disaster was likely caused by hostile aliens, perhaps even Thargoids. But we haven’t spoken about it openly for months now precisely because we still have no proof. Rumors abound, but StarShip One’s disappearance is still a complete mystery to us. So, yeah we’re still keeping our eyes peeled but I think most Knights have given up on being able to find StarShip One.”

Part 5

“What about claims that your group is xenophobic?”

“Nothing would make us happier than finding a friendly alien species, and we have guidelines for first contact that reflects that hope. However, you must be prepared for hostility. In one hand we carry an olive branch, and in the other we carry a sword. It’s up to the aliens to decide which one they get.”

I asked, “Aren’t you worried that your group might inadvertently start an interstellar war? I mean, you’re recruiting pilots that are obviously paranoid about alien contact.”

Before he could answer, a loud groaning similar to the UA’s could be barely heard. Commander X grinned as he stared at me without a word.

As I was about to continue the conversation, a louder groan sounded off. I could even feel vibrations of the sound though the floor and table. The lights cut off without warning. Then the station powered down entirely and became dead quiet except for a few people in the bar with us. After only a few seconds the power came back online. Loud and stern, a voice came in over the station’s intercom.

“To all staff and visitors; we apologize for the blackout. Until further notice, nearly all station services will be offline and unavailable. Commanders may still dock, refuel, and sell cartographic data. But in order to conserve energy and prevent further blackouts, we must minimize the use of unessential services. We still don’t know the cause of the blackout, but everyone can rest assured that no one is in any danger. So, please, remain calm. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Commander X killed his liquor like a champ and then asked, “Do you believe in coincidence?”

“Uh, yeah, sure,” I replied.

“Not me. Whether its people or the universe setting an event into motion, everything happens for one reason or another, a means to an end. The planets go around the stars, the stars go around the galactic core, and genes constantly struggle for survival. The only thing that is a coincidence is the unwitting people that get caught up in what happens. These artefacts may not be alien, but they sure seem dangerous.”

Then a question came to my mind.

“If the Knights think the artefacts are dangerous, why are you selling them to this station?”

“Experimentation; and the results don’t look good.”

The commander got up and walked right out the bar without glancing back. I still wasn’t convinced that aliens were hatching some contrived scheme to get us. But only a fool would ignore the patterns the Knights were following. Are the Unknown Artefacts really weapons of an alien nemesis yet to be revealed? If not, who could build such things? And why would they build the artefacts so they’d damage all models of ships and stations? Or was it even the artefacts causing the system malfunctions to begin with?

Who knows? Maybe it’ll be the paranoid suspicions of groups like the Canonn and the Knights of the Black that will save us from whatever is happening. Or, perhaps, they’ll ultimately be just as helpless as the rest of us.

Title: Canonn calls for immediate halt to UA sales
When: At your discretion
Location: Global or bust!
Description:

The Voice of Varati today received this urgent statement from Dr Arcanonn of the Canonn Interstellar Research Group:

'As news of more station malfunctions comes in, I must urge all CMDRs, groups and agencies that have been selling Unknown Artefacts to stop doing so immediately, so as to avoid any further station shutdowns.

There is a very strong positive correlation between the new stations experiencing faults and the sale of UAs at those stations. Our own observations at Bond Hub, Varati, support this: UAs appear to affect stations in the same way they affect ships, with potentially disastrous consequences, and we currently have no way to stop it.

We don’t know if the damage is a deliberate act by the UAs or not, but it appears the energy they produce attacks and degrades any system it comes into contact with.

Given these new findings, we are also now deeply troubled by the previous surge in the value of UAs across the black market, which clearly led to this increase in sales. Who caused this increase? And did they know the effect it would have? If so, then the UA mystery really might be conspiracy after all.'

Description:

Racers and Fuel Rats have been reportedly gathering at Tepech for the latest Buckyball Racing Club event: The Mischief Mile.

The race, that was inspired by the Fuel Rats, lasts from 5. December 3301 00:01 GMT until 13. December 3301 23:59 GMT. It starts from Hooke Hub station in Tepech, finishing at Ocampo Station in Mirateje and requires racers to travel the width of populated space as fast as possible. The route has checkpoints at Fuelum (home of the Fuel Rats Mischief), NLTT 48288 (most popular place in the galaxy to run out of fuel) and MCC 811 (second most likely place to run out of fuel).

There are three classes to enter - Fuel Rat Regulars, Fuel Rat Crazies and Bonus Snickers, depending on the ship used in the race.

Officials at Hooke Hub have declined to comment on the increased occurrence of reckless flying around the station but the ammunition supplier at Ocampo Station is said to be appreciative of all the extra Limpets being delivered.

Title: The Devil At Your Door

Description:

Citizens across the Empire were in panic today as reports emerged of Kumo infiltration in the wealthy system of LTT 874, a place only 15ly from Achenar and Capitol.

The Kumo Crews advance into the system began violently aboard Parkinson Orbital when the body of a missing LTT 874 Empire Party official was dumped from a passing transport clutching a blood stained note:

“The Imperial Senate foolishly began the war with the Kumo. Now we return the favour, and bring the Pegasi War to the very doorstep of the Empire, to the gates of Achenar itself. There is no place left to hide, for we are everywhere. Surrender and live, oppose us and die.”

Despite pleas for calm and unity, wealthy families have been reported secretly moving finances away from the system as dread grips the heart of the Empire. Terrified citizens in LTT 874 have taken to the streets to plead for help, but so far the ruling LTT 874 Empire Party and other Imperial channels have remained silent.

Attention now falls on senior Imperial figures, and the difficult task of fighting their elusive foe in the one place that was once thought safe.

Title: Knights Up the Ante Against UA Peddlers

The Knights of the Black have released a statement today concerning the Canonn’s claim that there is a positive correlation between recent station malfunctions and Unknown Artefacts being sold on those stations’ black markets.

“We have sufficient reason to believe that the Canonn’s observations are correct. While we agree that commanders should stop selling UAs to any and all stations, it may be unreasonable to expect that due to the value and intrigue of these objects.”

Instead, the Knights insist that commanders should draw the line at the capital systems of the three major galactic factions.

“Alioth, Achenar, and Sol should be absolutely off limits. We need not remind everyone that the Unknown Artefacts are illegal to possess in most places. If any more stations shut down within those three systems, we will begin patrols in those systems to scan and identify ships that are carrying Unknown Artefacts. And, in that event, we will call upon like-minded commanders and groups to join us in patrolling and protecting these most critical of systems. We will not tolerate those who would intentionally risk the safety of the human race for personal or political gain.”

Title: This Week in Alliance Politics

From the Alliance Office of Statistics, Gateway

Edmund Mahon's diplomats are working hard in the outpost system of Benanekpeno, trying to arrange mutually profitable Trade Agreements with the nearby systems. Our political analysts feel confident that these negotiations will succeed, as there has been a call for private pilots to help carry diplomatic packages from the nearby system of Gui Banni.

Similar calls for transport assistance have been requested to help Edmund Mahon's crack team of Alliance Bureaucrats transport themselves and their cargo of legislative contracts to their respective destinations.

Currently there is a need for transportation between these systems: From Arany to Marralteki. From Robor to Urarina. From Unkuar to 37 Librae. From Arabh to HIP 80243.

The Alliance Office of Statistics is looking for experienced cargo pilots, and have arranged for some of these transports. If you wish to help us, please get in touch.

"It's a transcendental experience," says M. Inkhura, whose everyday occupation is that of Systems Defense in Dvorsi.

"Remember your repair supplies, blokes," cautions CMDR Deadfight. "Bring extra SRVs, cause you're going to lose a few on the mountain! If you want to get the most hangtime, find the sheerest cliff face on the range and point down when thrusting to power away from the side of the mountain. The goal is to make it to the bottom. Title: Shadow Navy calls for ban on unknown artifacts

Distribution: Galnet (alternatively Sol, Alpha Centauri, Eravate, Tjindjin, Volungu, Eta Cassiopeiae)

Time: For Immediate Release

Earlier today during an open congressional session the Shadow Navy's office of information released to following recommendation to Federal Congress:
“The Shadow Navy, traditionally operating quietly behind the scenes, has always and will always support the great work of the Federation. Recent events have, however, forced us out of the shadows. We believe that the sale, distribution and experimentation on these so-called ‘unknown artifacts’ are inextricably linked to a series of electrical and mechanical failures at various starports around the galaxy. When the premiere research group investigating these objects calls for a voluntary cessation of sales of these objects the Federation should listen. We are therefore calling on Federal Congress to issue an official ban on the sale and transport of these mysterious objects within Federation space. We are already enforcing just such a ban within Shadow Navy controlled systems and invite and implore all other Federation minor factions to follow suit.”

Title: Imperial Pilots Answer the Call

Description:

Imperial pilots this past week chose to answer the threat of the Emperor’s Dawn base in Kausalya by offering their ships and their flight skills to the cause. Dozens of wings under the Imperial flag arrived in Kausalya with overtures of international cooperation.

Cmdr Linden Martin, pledged to Senator Patreus, said: “We’ve been tracking and fighting Dawn for weeks and suspected that the Senator’s announcement would lull them into a false sense of security. We know how to fight these terrorists, we know their tactics. The Emperor entrusted Senator Patreus with pacifying this threat, and my wingmates and I consider it our duty to see that mission discharged. President Hudson recognises the threat Emperor’s Dawn poses to peace in the galaxy, and we stand ready to assist.”

Operations in Kausalya were concluded faster than news commentators expected, as thousands of pilots from across the Federation, Empire, and independent systems came together to demonstrate the determination of civilised society not to be dictated to by terrorists.

Following four weeks of icy relations between Munshin Allied PLC and Libertas Co-operative, hostilities spilled into the skies of Munshin this weekend. System defense forces flying under command of Libertas Co-operative were aided by numerous Aisling aligned commanders including the Black Hand and Pileus Libertas.
These efforts were quickly successful and Libertas Co-operative took over management of both Sterney's Refuge and Harding Station early Monday morning.
Speaking from new Libertas Co-operative offices, Galleria Huneric welcomed the new additions: "We at Libertas regret the unfortunate turn of events forced upon us these last three days. It is always our preference, as your stewards, to find solutions which appeal to all parties. Going forward we are excited to embrace new opportunities here at Sterney's Refuge and in Harding Station."
