Title: Federation Defense Contractor Allegedly Supplying Kumo Crew

Date: ASAP

Place: Galaxy-wide

Description:

Phantom Black, a hacker-activist group, has released documents that allegedly implicates a Federation-aligned, government-subsidized defense contractor in providing material support to the Kumo Crew.

The group released the financial records of Arborgate Logistics, a corporation well-known for its involvement in supplying weapons, vehicles, and other military hardware to various system defense fleets and private security firms.

The records released by Phantom Black show that Arborgate used funds from government subsidies to purchase surplus ships, components, weapons, ammunition and armor without a clear reason given for the purchases. These supplies were later transferred to numerous systems in the Pegasi sector, many of which fall under the direct control of the Kumo Crew.

Requests for comment by the press were ignored by Arborgate, but a spokesperson for the the Federal Security Service has said that they are in the process of conducting an internal investigation into the matter.

Title: NETO System sees PBSF Rising From The Ashes
CMDR - Pixel Bandits
Item:

Neto political news anchors have been surprised at the voter turnout in the system during the latest round of democratic elections. The once corrupt paramilitary party known for short as PBSF have been rebuilt after the revolution of 3300 by whistle-blower turned leader, Captain Christopher ‘Cap’ Anaidni. The latest results have caused quite a stir in the system, with Cap showing that the Pixel Bandits Security Force are not a party to be taken lightly.

Leader Johan Frame, of their largest rivals the Workers Of Neto Progressive Party has so far remained silent on the issue, however sources close to the press office are saying that this will certainly not be the landslide victory they expected.

We’ll bring you more on Cap in the coming weeks but leave you with his latest soundbite – “The citizens of this station have long been Marginalised and taken for granted. We say, ‘No More’.

I just read the GalNet article by Quade "PIRATES TARGET PEGASI REFUGEES". Unless this is some prelude to Archon and his minions being banished from the game, I have to say I'm surprised FD allowed it into print.

"Reports are pouring in from the Amitrite system of pirate attacks on refugees fleeing the Pegasi Pirate War. The transports pouring from the Pegasi sector are often overloaded and poorly equipped, making them easy prey for the pirates."

I'm no pirate but being a pirate was supposed to be a legit path to follow I thought. Archon, no matter how despicable most of us think he is, has as much right to push his agenda as Hudson, Duval, or Mahon. By printing this in GalNet that group is now cast as terrorists and murderers instead of dastardly pirates. That seems unfair to me. Before, If I wanted to play as a pirate I could fancy myself as a cargo redistribution specialist. Now, I'd be just thrown in with murderers. If I've missed some important plot point, I'm sorry. Otherwise this is a calamitous remapping of an entire role playing class.

Yes, you are correct. Piracy in and of itself is a core part of Elite and its lore, and will surely continue to be such. Your participation in piracy does not in and of itself does not make you a "murderer" or anything worse than a "cargo redistribution specialist" if that's what you want to call yourself.

That said, casting Archon as a simple pirate doesn't do justice to the character FD built for him. He's not just a pirate in the terms you consider piracy. He is the quintessential "bad guy" that was set up for everyone to hate. Call me prejudiced because of my Imperial point of view, but I feel any attempt to give Archon a veneer of legitimacy goes against the character FD appears to have built.

Here are some snippets from the GalNet articles FD published on Archon (not player submitted articles) as they prepared for Powerplay.

First article:
14-May-3301 - "A talented tactician, and a brutal fighter, Archon famously assumed leadership of the Kumo Crew at the tender age of 15 after violently beating the previous leader to death during a clan moot.
So far, the Kumo Crew have shown no interest in taking direct control over any of the regions they’ve plundered. Instead, they’ve taken to sending regular raiding parties to collect tithes on behalf of the Crew. Systems who agree to their demands are spared, while those who refuse are burnt to the ground.
All attempts to stop the spread of the crew throughout the Pegasi Sector have so far met with failure. The Kumo Crew are described as being well armed, psychotic and thus extremely dangerous."

Archon was introduced as a "Villain, murderer, madman." - 3-JUN-3301

It was said that: "Those who find themselves blocking the Kumo Crew’s spread throughout the Pegasi sector will pay the price for their defiance." - 18 JUN 3301

Archon's methods are not that of the "normal pirate" simply wanting your cargo:
24 JUL 3301 - "Reports coming in from the sector indicate that the Kumo Crew are now operating in over 160 different systems, with millions of people being forced to pay the pirates for protection, or else risk death or dismemberment for failing to do so."

This refugee crisis was discussed way back in June:
23-JUN-3301 - "Thousands of Pegasi sector civilians were forced to evacuate their homes last week, following a series of brutal raids carried out in the name of Archon Delaine."

Pranav Antal was quoted stating:
23-JUN-3301 - “Their greed, their jealousy… these are the things that drive the Kumo to try to own, control and destroy everything they see.”
“This desire for base things has led the crew down a dark path, one which has caused much pain for the people of Pegasi. We at Utopia understand their sorrow, their troubles, and we want to help.”
“Agents of Utopia are seeking to open a new commune in Hip 116213. Once approved, our engineers will begin the dangerous process of establishing an enlightened defence against the uncivilised horde.”

FD baited both the Federation and the Empire to fight the Kumo Crew:
23-JUN-3301 - "Some resilient residents have attempted to reach out to the Federation and Empire homeworlds for assistance, but so far, their pleas for help have gone unanswered. This leaves the
question on everyone’s lips: who will stop the Kumo Crew?"

Empire bait:
13-JUN-3301 - Exactly what the Kumo Crew plans to do with the Imperial Slaves is unknown, although given how much the Kumo Crew were paying for them it’s almost certainly not going to be pleasant.

Federation bait:
24-JUN-3301 - Almost 20 billion members of the Federation live within territory that has now been claimed by the Kumo Crew. Despite this, the Federation has yet to take an official stance on the Pirate King’s activities.
GalNet reached out to the Federal Navy for comment and was informed that:
“The Navy is aware of the situation in the Pegasi sector. The issue will be resolved in due course, but we are unable to divulge any operational details at this time.”

Here's a collection of all Archon / Pegasi Sector related articles: From Backwater to Front-Page News: A History of the Pegasi Sector

Hope that answers your implied question:
If I've missed some important plot point, I'm sorry.

Title: Palin Urged to Join Research Group
Description:

Last week saw reports that Prof. Ishmael Palin has been forced to cease his research into the ‘Anomalous Extraterrestrial Objects’, also known as ‘Unknown Artefacts’.

The Voice of Varati has since received this statement from the Canonn Interstellar Research Group:

‘We are extremely distressed to read reports that our fellow scientist, Prof. Palin, has seen his open attempts to conduct research into the Unknown Artefact (UA) forcibly terminated. This is indeed a sad end to a promising beginning, especially with the early revelations about the Artefact that the Professor shared with us all.

We here at Canonn Labs can only speculate as to the reasons why he’s been silenced in this high-handed way. What is certain is that the fires of suspicion are spreading rapidly: Somebody in a position of power, be it an individual or collective, knows far more about these things than the rest of us, yet wishes this information to remain secret. If so, the question surely is “Why?”.

The Canonn will, therefore, redouble its efforts to conduct open research into the UA, as we feel strongly it is in the best interests of humanity to learn as much as we can about these mysterious artefacts.

We also urge Ishmael to join us, now, for we feel it would be in the best interests of his safety and the safety of his assistants. Yes, there have been recent, uncorroborated, reports that Canonn lab assistants have been incinerated, but that is ultimately a matter for our insurance company.

The fact remains that the professor will be surrounded by friends if he comes to us, and will certainly be safer than if he stayed put.

So, please, professor: you can contact our Council at any time and we will assemble a quick response team to assure your safety.’

We will bring you more as, and when, we get it.

System : Nadur

Title : Election resuts are being tallied

Description
The recently held elections between Nadur One and Paesia Future have concluded and the results are being counted now... Initial results appear to suggest a landslide win for Paesia Future as they increased their influence to 62% while reducing Nadur One influence in the system down to 1%.

Thigs are looking promising for the businesses and residents of Nadur as Paesia Future have a strong supply and demand chain of systems now in their portfolio with their home system offering pristine metallic mining reserves and high end industrial manufacturing facilities. With their recent expansions into Assiones to secure extraction facilities and into Khan Gubii to enable high tech manufacturing and refining, there are plenty of opportunities for Nadur to sell its resources at high yields with its neighbours...

Stability and security within the system can only grow as a result of this election once Gold Vision Inc. relinquish their control of the system

Title: Forgotten Corners of the Galaxy - Fehu

Description:

300 ly south of inhabited space is the remote Imperial star system of Fehu, governed by the Fehu Citizens of Tradition. The star system is home to several big name media corporations including DK and Son Holographics, but also attracts exobiologists to two of the gas giants; one supporting ammonia-based life, the other water-based life.

The terraformed planet of Likopo is home to most of the system’s 3 million inhabitants, with only 8.7% oxygen but over double the atmospheres ensuring a human-breathable environment. Days are over twice as long, but years are five and a half weeks shorter. The planet enjoys a rather warm average temperature of 30°C, and tourists are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat stroke, especially around the equatorial regions.

Frigschneck’s Resort station plays host to the comings and goings of tourists, but the station’s economy largely operates in concert with the agriculture of the planet below, processing and transporting foodstuffs to other star systems. Thompson-Keen Asylum, set up in orbit of the rocky moon of Doolhof, runs an efficient refinery operation to process the ores extracted by freelance miners, most of whom work on the metal-rich Fehu 1 and 2.

With a growing economy and populace, Fehu is proving a popular location for Imperial companies to relocate and invest.

Cool ... anyone know how long that takes to propagate through into the game? (I'm docked at Toolfa at the moment but don't see it).
Sorry if this is an old and tiresome question but this is my first published news article.

Still no sign of Buckyball Racers are coming to Toolfa article while docked at a Toolfa system station.

a) am I looking in the right place? (just normal Galnet news while docked in that system?)
b) do these things sometimes take several days to filter through after publication confirmation?

Should be the local news, not the "global" GalNet news. Give it a few hours at least. :)

Title: Public Opinion on Imperial Succession Debate

Description:

Whilst the Senate continues to debate the issue of succession to the Imperial throne, the Imperial public too have taken a great interest in the candidates. Though they have no direct say in deciding the next Emperor, Imperial citizens are vocal in extolling the merits of the various contenders.

Carpe Diem, the Empire’s biggest opinion pollster, this past week conducted a survey of a random sample of the populace. Results suggested that the two princesses are leading the race, revealing a noticeable although not definitive age gap in support, with the younger generation more willing to consider Princess Aisling Duval’s reformist policies favourably. In addition, Senator Patreus has seen an increase in support as public approval responds to his swift action against terrorist group Emperor’s Dawn, but Senator Torval and Chancellor Blaine also remain in the running, enjoying particular popularity amongst their system residents.

Sothar Vithu, 151, Achenar’s oldest resident and former Senator of Avalon, said: “I’ll be seeing in my third Emperor when the month is up. Whoever it is, they’ll need to adapt to the demands of a changing Empire, and be as sharp a strategist as I ever saw in order to keep the Empire prosperous and strong.” When asked if he had any pearls of wisdom for the candidates, he added: “Yes. There’s only two real contenders in this race: the one people feel they’re supposed to support, and the one they want to support. You must choose which one you will be.”

TITLE: Corruption investigation locks down Federal Congress

DATE: Not urgent

LOCATION: Sol

DESCRIPTION: The Federal Congress has been placed under lockdown due to an ongoing investigation into corruption allegations stemming from the misappropriation of funds from government subsidies.

In a press briefing, House Speaker Anthony Squire revealed that several Congressmen had been implicated in a scheme to funnel government endowments into a private hedge fund. Squire refused to give the names of the representatives involved, but assured the public that the government will continue to function for the duration of the investigation.

“Congress will continue to serve the people of the Federation, even as we root out the corruption in these hallowed halls,” said Squire.

The Federal Security Service has stated that it has imposed travel restrictions on members of Congress, including staffers and lobbyists, until it concludes its investigations.

The lockdown comes in the midst of heated debate over Federal Navy acquisitions, tax breaks to certain consumer goods and combat bond compensation reform.

Hi Micahel and chaps,

Can we have a bounty hunting CG in an Antal system? Perhaps an Anarchy Control system? Herernaku, HIP 4005 or perhaps somewhere far out like Takurua. Maybe the resurgence of trouble in HIP 116213? It suits the the story line and ethos nicely and it would be a refreshing break from all the usual ones. It could even be tied in with the recent Pegasi war and refugees as a secondary CG, with Antal seeking medicines and clothing in HIP 116213. What do you think? Something for the little guys.

Good work at the recent show 1.4 and 1.5 look amazing!

Libertas Co-operative gains support.

Title: The Libertas Co-operative Gains Support
Date: For immediate release
Location: Munshin only
Author: CMDR Quade
Publication: Munshin Free Beacon
Description:
Following an exhausting week at the docks of Orcinox's Orbiter, members of The Libertas Co-operative are getting some much needed rest. That rest is destined to be short lived, however, because the number of Pegasi refugees arriving grows each day. The Libertas Co-operative has agreed to provide food and shelter to the incoming refugees as part of Munshin's resettlement program.
Speaking from Co-operative headquarters on Orcinox Opulence, Community Organizer Galleria Huneric said The Libertas Co-operative is poised to take a larger role in Munshin politics. "We've seen our numbers swell this past week, and not just as a result of taking in refugees. People from all over the Munshin system are joining up to help make a better future. We've been in close contact with the government here and they have invited us to have a seat at the table."
She added, "None of this would be possible without the help of the independent commanders of Pileus Libertas."

Publication: Zandu Science Journal
Description:
Dr. Maxwell, CEO of the powerful Maxwell Corp. and one of the richest fortunes in Altair, released today a brief statement about the rumored forthcoming opening of a new branch in Eta-1 pictoris.
"We're going to start a serious project there. I'm not saying that Dr. Arcanonn's project is not serious, I've the maximum respect for crowdfunded research projects... We have to make a first contact, but following a protocol. We don't want a random pilot, we want to send trained scientists. We have many things to learn from them, and I want such knowledge for my company and the benefit of the Federation."
About the acquisition of two former elite federal units, FNE and FRO, Dr.Maxwell added: "Such a project will undoubtedly capture the unwanted attention of many eyes, we have to protect our investment."

Sidewinder Trust CFO arrested

  • Date and time for the news item/event: For immediate publication
  • Title – This should be brief and include the location in the form of a system: Sidewinder Trust CFO arrested
  • Description – This should ideally be no more than 150 words:

Sidewinder Trust CFO arrested
After months of investigation, Interstellar Criminal Police Organization agents today arrested Anthony Ergot, CFO of Faulcon DeLacy's non profit "Sidewinder Trust".

A popular non-profit organization that seeks to provide affordable frameshift-capable starships to small business owners, the Sidewinder Trust has been crucial to many a pilot's career. The trust provides microcredits to Pilot Federation Members that are automatically repaid. Pilots would often not even notice they paid interest.

Sources close to Alliance Commissioner for Competition Graeme Argent claim that Mr. Ergot siphoned a substantial amount of money via the automatic interest deduction process that is part of every Sidewinder ship computer. With data migrating to other ships, these deductions continued long after the credit would have been repaid.

It is also possible that some pilots may not have paid any interest at all, with or without their knowledge. A possible distortion of competition is still under investigation by Mr. Argent's office.
According to recent polls, Faulcon-DeLacy remains one of the most popular shipbuilders for entry-level to high-end space craft. Critics point out that the Sidewinder Trust likely contributed significantly to their brand recognition.

Title(feel free to edit): System Protection Force Eliminates Impostors from the Eravate System.
Location: Global, Eravate
Cmdr Name: S!LK

Body (edit as you feel fit):

Peace and harmony has returned to Eravate today as several Commanders hiding behind the mask of the sworn protectors of Eravate were eliminated by the group that they were impersonating. Violence in the Eravate system erupted earlier this week as a Denton Patreus aligned group started killing new members of the Pilot's Federation in order to sully the name of the system's protectorate force "Adle's Armada." Upon hearing about the murder spree, the Armada sprung into action hunting down known members of this gang of impostors. After hours of fighting, the battle had been decided. The Imperial group had lost all but one of its Clippers which left the system with a cracked hull screaming "I'll be back with more reinforcements and shield cell banks! We are the Emperor's Grace!" After the battle was won, Armada leadership was quick to assure all innocent citizens in its systems that they were safe and that there were murderers posing as Armada system security in order to hunt new pilots without question. Adle's Armada leader Tyllerius Adle III stated that he does not think that Senator Patreus was behind this attack, but it was a fragment group of inexperienced pilots looking for fame and fortune by killing pilots that were new behind the controls of their Sidewinders.

He continues with "In Eravate as well as LHS 3447, Kremainn and even Ngaliba, law must reign supreme in order to keep new pilots safe as they start their journey into the dangerous galaxy. These are not the systems to be looking for fights because you might end up on the wrong end of the insurance screen."

Title: Remembering the Eravate Rebellion of 3298

Date: ASAP

Place: Eravate

Description:

October 5th will mark the third anniversary of the Eravate Rebellion, the bloodiest conflict in the system’s history.

The two-week-long standoff began when insurgent forces, financed by rival interests to the Eravate Network corporation, seized Ackerman Market and positioned an improvised orbital weapon - a small asteroid - over Chantilly, a city on the surface of Eravate Five.

The insurgents demanded the resignation of Eravate Network’s Board of Directors and for the Federal Security Service to relinquish control of Cleve Hub and Russell Ring.

Negotiations were conducted, but ultimately failed when the insurgency’s leader, Ramone Osalla, executed the Federal negotiator in cold blood just before giving the order to destroy Chantilly.

A counter-assault on Ackerman Market soon followed, with the Federal Navy successfully driving Osalla’s forces from the station, but at the cost of many innocent lives.

Memorials will be held throughout the month in remembrance of those lost in the conflict.
