A new DLC where players can build and customise their own planetary base or station and quarters in their own ship. It’s not a new idea, there have been posts on it since 2014 (listed below). It would add a lot of depth to the game and I don’t think it would be too hard to develop (but I am not a game developer so what would I know). And there is potential for a lot of extra steamstore sales for customisations, décor and mementos.

Build and customise your own planetary base or station:
-Unlock the right to own a base/station depending on your reputation with local faction (Cordial, Friendly, Allied, Citizen!)
-Purchase real-estate on a landable planet or build in orbit
-Land price based on desirable features such as distance from Sol, distance from local sun (goldilocks zone), amenities in the system, population of the system, security of the system and land size
-For planetary bases the number of modules is limited by land size
-Orbital stations have higher build cost but don’t need to purchase land
-Orbital stations have no module limit because you can just keep adding on to it
-High distances from Sol have higher build cost but lower purchase cost
-Anarchy systems you don't need to purchase land or have faction support but there is also no security
-Have a room/rooms with your own mementos. Pivot your head around from the centre at first but when space legs become a thing, walk through it. This would look very cool in VR.
-Store mementoes (a trophy cabinet)
-Customise décor
-Purchase base/station modules such as:
-warehouse to store commodities (it’s ridiculous that you can’t store commodities in ED other than in your own ship)
-landing pads and a hanger to safely store all your ships. It would be cool if you could park on the “lawn” on a planetary base but risk your ship being stolen by local thugs based on the system specs and RNG
-security/defence otherwise RNG your stuff gets stolen/attacked (kind of like Fallout 4 settlements)
-refuel, repair, restock
-solar panels, battery, generators to power modules

Customisable quarters in your ship
-Store mementoes
-Customise décor – bed, desk, radio, window, stripper pole (the essentials for out in the black)
-Have a radio with your choice of music or play Galent
-Have a cut scene where your commander walks from the cockpit to commander quarters (until space legs happens)
-Pivot your head around from the centre of the room (until space legs happens)
-If in a safe location going to ship quarters pauses the game without logging off.

Just thought to add: much of this would need to be part of the upcoming Space Legs content that FD are developing. I posted a thread at the weekend with some ideas that I had, and some are in keeping with your suggestions. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...for-Space-Legs I don't know if it would interest you, but any feedback on there would be welcome.

Since we presently can't leave the cockpit, how do you suggest we get into the captain's quarters and/or planetary base?

Yes I would like to see something like this but only on a small scale, no market, no outfitting, it is just somewhere to park your ships that you can call home. But until space legs drops I can't see it happening because we are currently stuck to the pilot's chair.

A first step toward this would be a customizable hangar. Your special space won't require permanent model changes to the world space, just your local instance.

You might consider advocating for apartments within established bases - might be the low hanging fruit as well.

Space Legs are overhyped and useless, I'd literally prioritise almost any remotely useful feature above them. Especially extending landing capacity and adding discoverable stuff, and more squadron- and faction-related functionality.

But I do agree that a place to call your own, even if it's just a personal hangar and a cabin onboard a station or in a ground installation, would be absolutely great. Wrt. game play, it could provide some extra capabilities: perhaps extra module and ship storage (or just separate storage not counting against the current limits?), an extra pinnable engineer modification or two, and a modest amount of commodity storage space. Maybe could in addition to transferring a ship to your current location have the option to send a ship to your "home base" from any shipyard? And transferring cargo to your commodity storage for a fee?

Of course, there's the question of what's in it for FD. They're in the business of making money. I wouldn't mind if a home base would cost a few euros/pounds/dollars of real money. And it could be decorated with all kinds of vanity stuff, for a cost. I would definitely want a mirrorball and a bar counter in my quarters! :D
