Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

I know this is probably a stupid question, but do I have to have FreeTrack/OpenTrack installed on my computer to get the head tracking working? I got the video running great, but can't figure out head tracking for the life of me.

Freetrack should work from Trinus running on your PC without any additional stuff. Opentrack is a redirect to the Opentrack software on your PC which in turn you have to link to your phone using FreePIE (I believe). Both worked for me, although I found Opentrack to be a little bit more accurate and reliable. Not sure how to set up dead zones with Opentrack properly yet tho', either haven't looked deep enough or I missed it.

Does your phone at least have gyroscope functionality?

Hmmm...not working for me. I can start Trinus ok and the Desktop will share to my HTC One M8 - but when I move to the Elite window, it doesn't update, just sits there.

I'll look at dropping settings but it looks like if I want to have Elite VR I'm going to have to buy a Rift, Vive or Sulon...

Sooooooo frustrating trying to setup the head tracking portion here! Main OS is Win 7 x64 and I followed the instructions in the very helpful video. Data was passing over to Opentrack however the default.ini din't have any Roll profile - so when I swapped out that .ini for another one that had a roll profile included, it refused to work at all. Changing back the ini did zero.

Doing a netstat , I don't see any connection happening between the PC and PIE android app. The phone and PC on the same network (it did work before, albeit briefly) with the UDP firewall ports open. Done the usual reboots - In fact I have a Win 10 install on same PC and tried from there but no luck at all. Even more frustrating is that with TrinusVR the mouselook worked in the beginning too but also decided to refuse to work after a short time. The immersion for those few minutes in the game using VR was amazing ,, it really gives an idea of just how much potential there is with this technology.

Edit - Finally got Freetrack to work, but it still stops working after a 20 mins or so.. none the wiser what could be apart from buggy app

im having a funny prooblem with this. i get it working basically. some work to do on screen placement and size and such but im having a very basic problem. on the trinus vr server the default reset screen position button is "4". but 4 is used in game for me. i would quite like to use f12 as the OP did. but if i go to the tab to change it and left click the box. left click is now the recenter button. if i hover over it and press another button nothing happens..i feel really dumb. how do you change this button to what you want?

I've been trying to get the SweetFX VR Correction Shader Suite working for hours now and nothing is working.

-Launching the game via Steam
-Elite Dangerous: Horizons
-Windows 10 Pro 64x
-i7 4770k @4.5, GTX 970 (drivers up to date), 16GB Ram, Samsung Evo 840 250GB.

Instructions I followed
-Opened SWEETFX_3D_LENSE
-Copied all files
-Pasted to C:\Users\Proxish\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64
-Cut and replaced D3D9 & DXGI with 64x .dll's.
-Deleted SweetFX readme, SweetFX_Settings_3D_TRIDEF, OculusDroid_README, OculusDroidScreenShots, empty X64_dll's folder.
-Opened SweetFX_preset and pasted #include "C:\Users\Proxish\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64\SweetFX_Settings_3D_NATIVE.txt"

From this point, opening Elite Dangerous via Steam and clicking Play does nothing. The Play button disappears like it normally does before the game launches, then the Play buttons pops back up and nothing launches.
Any help would be appreciated.

Has anyone got Vridge working yet? I've set up the client / server, but it keeps saying 'waiting for VR stream' as though there's nothing coming through. Works fine with the Vridge demos. I've set ED to 3d side by side. I'm probably missing something :S

Yes. Riftcat is superior solution. I tested it yesterday and i am impressed.
I wrote about it here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=249254
To run ED through riftctat you need to install SteamVR and switch in-game not to 3D SBS, but to HMD mode. Riftcate will emulate Vive.
I also linked a tutorial.

Elite Dangerous SteamVR with Google Cardboard via Riftcat Tutorial

Hmm I tried to get this whole Riftcat thing working. Sadly it never will for my computer, unless Riftcat is willing to make their streaming SW work with something other than a VCE HW encoder anyway. Looks like it's Trinus only for me...
