Possible idea for VR.

When I get into a cockpit, I want to use the controls. I don't want to just have a 3D view.
That means pushing the throttle, moving the joystick, pressing buttons to change weapons and such.
Turn to the left or right panels and place your finger on a line or a tab to select or change it.
Just like we are actually IN the cockpit flying the ship ourselves.

For those of us who have VR but can't afford the megabucks for a decent HOTAS possibly only using it for this game, it would allow us to have the same control as if we had a HOTAS.
In addition, it would give far more immersion since we would control the ship just as if we were actually there.

You do realize FDev have announced that "further development of VR is not being worked on" and that that includes Odyssey on-foot content. This surely would qualify to go in the same bucket.

Oh well, Star Citizen it is then. It seems that SC devs know a lot more about VR than Frontier and are not scared to add it.

Dude, how you can say that? VR in SC is not -officially- supported in any shape or form. You can use vorpX, yes, but that has hothing to do with SC devs that you describe as "so VR savvy". Either you know something no one knows, or you are making this up.

This might help you.

What do you mean by the words the megabucks for a decent HOTAS ? I have several expensive HOTAS (including Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog and even Thrustmaster TPR Rudder Pedals). But the usual Saitek 52 Pro is quite convenient for the Elite Dangerous game.

Hold on…. I remember there was a crowd in this forum clambering about keyboard and mouse being ”far superior” than flight control sticks in at least PvP, if not all aspects of space flight.

In addition, there are the XBox and PS crowd who fly with console “controllers.” Moreover, I know at least one commander, who fly with an XBox controller on PC. And I suspect there are a lot of those who wouldn’t admit to it lest it tarnishes their PeeCee master race status.

So, what mega bucks?

I don't understand your comment about PC users being embarrassed to admit to using a gamepad. They play with whatever they want to play with. The new gamepads are nice bits of kit with hall effect joysticks

I tried someone else's HOTAS, but I just didn't like it. I guess a mouse does have the best input resolution, but it would take me a lot of time to get used to

Oh and VR flight controls are the worst of the worst. Anyone who's ever tried playing No Man's Sky with their hands dangling in fresh air trying to move their motion controller just a tad, will know what I mean

I’ve been play since day 1 with a HOTAS and TrackIR. Started with an X52 then an X52 Pro and currently an X56. For me I don’t think I could play it any other way I also now play it in VR too but I did recently buy a 34” 3440x1440 UW so the VR kinda takes a back seat to UW+TrackIR just because it’s “easier“ I have accidentally activated mouse flying on a few occasions and man! How can anyone maintain any kind of precision like that is my only thought while completely panicking.
I’ve always been curious to try it with a gamepad but having a HOTAS and having every possible function available and never having to even touch my keyboard except to type in a system name I would probably have no issues flying but the button limitations would probably turn me off having to resort to needing to use my keyboard for many functions I’d probably need.
I mean my bottom line is I admire people using “alternative“ controls to mine for this game considering its complexity but only recently playing it in VR really just added another level to my choice of immersion the OPs VR ideas don’t really “enhance“ VR to me it would really only make it worse…
I won’t disagree about NMS in VR it actually makes it worse because it’s much like the OPs suggestions making it more fiddly and harder to do things that used to be simple and intuitive.

My CV1 came with an XBox gamepad so I'd been using my DK2 with one while I was waiting for it to become available

The game's controls are highly customisable. What I do with my gamepad is I supplement it with a footpedal as a modifier key. I press the footpedal and suddenly all the buttons, knobs, and levers on my gamepad all work different things

Voice Attack comes in handy as well

Yeah i guess about 15 years ago when I was hardcore into IL-2 I spent more time than I ever care to admit on the X52 using the programming software to utilize all the mode switches, macros, shift key combos with every function labeled to appear correctly on the display basically allowing you to fly any type of aircraft being able to utilize its role(bomber/Fighter/ground attacker etc) with a single profile. It probably took me a year to perfect. It became a very popular profile within the community that even years later I would get random requests for it. The last person that asked me about it many many years later I had to tell him with hardware upgrades etc I actually had lost it..Well lo and behold it had made into the mod sites and he actually gave me a copy of it…my labour of love had become immortal

So I totally understand what’s possible with some time and effort you can use your hardware of choice to do everything you wan/need it to without having to make any compromise or limitations.

Edit; I will say ED has some great profile presets to work with

I'm guessing that a good compromise for a fully feature flightsim would be to use a proper HOTAS positioned in the correct place for the rubber hand illusion, and then use a motion control for all the switches and dials in the cockpit?

If I was to ever get a HOTAS it would be to glue it to the arms of my seat to get that heightened sense of presence in VR
