Powerplay 2.0 for casual

Hi,

With my friend we are casual player. About 3h by week.
The actual powerplay need, as i see, to achieve the 5 missions to pass the rank.
Sonwe need in this situation to take ALL the time we have to do only the powerplay.
So i think we will leave this, and after some weeks we will leave the game because we cant achieve the best play of the game.

One option is to gain rank with about 2 or 3 missions only. Or best idea.

As this, casual player can get in the game and increase the fun.

(Sorry for my english)

It is entirely possible to complete the initial tasks in less than three hours and merit decay is not a thing anymore - you can engage with powerplay as much or as little as you like and not lose any progress. But even so, powerplay is not the whole game, just a bit of it.

Elite Dangerous is a game designed for long term play. Its like a hobby that can be played for years. As such many of the major activities take a very long time, and offer mostly "feel good" rewards.

Elite ranks are a good example. Some of the lower ranks are needed to unlock some engineers, which allow the cmdr to improve modules. I believe the combat rank Dangerous is the highest rank that gives a tangible reward (unlocks an engineer). Beyond that, there is absolutely no "reward" or benefit to gaining ranks to Elite V. Even though it takes significant time and effort.

Powerplay has a ranking scheme with some rewards, but the tangible rewards aren't really that significant. The Powerplay modules have always been around (except shock canon) and lots of players never bothered getting them. If you are new to the game and looking to get a more "powerful" ship Powerplay isn't the ideal priority. Gaining credits, unlocking engineers, and getting some key guardian modules is a way better choice.

In summary, I believe Elite Dangerous is more like a hobby that you chip away at over time.

I really don't understand this feedback. Must the missions be performed within a certain time frame (1 week between ticks), do they reset otherwise?

Yes they reset every week. And you need to complete all 5 of them to get past rank 0.
So being unable to clear all 5 in a week essentially locks you out of powerplay permanently.
Personally I can see how this is a problem for people that play only a few hours per week. I'd suggest to give the users an initial set of missions that doesn't reset on Thursdays unless you specifically agree to it (we all know that fdev likes to bork missions beyond completability). Problem solved. Still need to clear all 5 but you don't get locked out if you just don't want to play this hot mess more than 30min per month.

I can't - especially the first set. Three of the tasks need to be completed in a reinforcement system, so it's very easy to knock them out at the same time and then it's just deliveries. I would think most people can do the whole lot in considerably less than an hour.

I have to wonder though; if you can't stand the gameplay involved, what are you doing it for? You really shouldnt treat this game as a reward based grind, because, as in every part of this game, the rewards just allow you to complete more of the same gameplay more efficiently.

We need a screenshot of your Powerplay missions if you really want help. And a screenshot showing your current rank would also be useful.

You shouldn't, but for some reason Frontier keep stacking recent game systems with increasing amounts of rewards though. Arx, "care packs", cosmetics, modules, stupidly large payouts, engineering mats,.... What else is a noob supposed to think?

Crazy idea - how about whatever you do for PP just accumulates and if you do it slow it just accumulates slower. None of this weekly reset nonsense. This way casuals can still get whatever just in their own pace. Too radical? 🤷‍♂️

If you’re going to quit just because you have to spend one gaming session unlocking PP, I suggest this game isn’t for you.

There’s plenty of other things to do in game. There no requirement to do PP, and very little new content added with it.

As a casual gamer you’re not going to have much opportunity to influence anything - there’s people who spend more time in ED every day than I spend in a week! - so essentially you’re just slowly chipping away at your personal rank and maybe helping others in their plans for the power.

And once you’ve done the first weeks missions, you can do whatever you like.

PvPers seem to put a lot of stock in the modules, but as a casual gamer you’re never going to be good enough at PvP to maximise the benefits of those modules.

This game requires a lot of time. You don’t need to be playing 18hrs a day, but as casual players we have to accept that things are going to take time.

Elite Dangerous is much more than just Power Play.

I've joined at summer this year. Would suggest to stay away from PP until:
  • 8(?) current professions are tried at least to some degree and more or less clear which of those brings most fun. Otherwise how to choose to whom to pledge?
  • Some financial freedom is achieved.
  • Unlocked most of Engineers needed for chosen professions.
  • Required Imperial/Federal/etc. Ranks are gained for Engineers / Ships of choice.

P.S. IMHO, pledging only for modules makes any sense only if you already have everything else and only Prismatic (or whatever module) missing for complete in-game happiness.

P.P.S. Flying in ED is like reading a crazy interesting book and writing it at the same time. Point is that when you doing really fun things then 2-3 additional hours could be easily cut from a night sleep without heavy morning consequences.

I did the first 5 tasks on the week Powerplay was first introduced and they were crazy easy. It took me longer to figure out what the tasks meant than to actually do them. I had to figure out what was meant by Acquisition System and Power Commodity. It took me about 30 min. Crazy easy, no actual danger. All done locally or nearby systems from my arbitrary chosen PP home. "Enemy" ships were basic level and didn't shoot back. This was obviously an exercise for the player to learn the basics.

Possibly the first 5 tasks have been made more challenging. I don't know.

If someone wants to play Elite Dangerous for less than 30 min per month, why would they be bothering with Powerplay? They can unlock a module in 5 years? Provide absolutely inconsequential assistance to their pledged power?

What gameplay does Powerplay offer them that the rest of the game doesn't? Trade missions? Rescue missions? Combat missions?
